How is it that Luis Aragones is Still Coaching Spain?

Far be it from me to advocate that anyone ever get fired, but I find it almost incredible that Luis Aragones is still running the show for Spain. After leading his team to an early crap out in the World Cup, Aragones received the backing of his football federation. He is still being supported, at least publicly, despite losing to Northern Ireland and Sweden in Euro 2008 qualifying. At this rate, a loss against Andorra might get Aragones the job for life.

His job security can’t be that great though if you are to believe that Wednesday’s friendly against Argentina is a must win game for Aragones. A must win friendly. You don’t see too many of them except in some places leading up to a World Cup and almost never at this point in the international cycle.

There’s no doubt that Spain’s troubles are not entirely the manager’s fault, but what has Aragones really done to keep his job? Surely there is someone else capable of leading Spain to mediocrity too, right?

Rest assured Spanish fans or any football fan for that matter, win, lose or draw this upcoming, mouthwatering fixture with Argentina, Luis Aragones should still remain as national coach of La Furia. He is a technical mastermind, a gentleman both on and off the pitch and will steer Spain in good stead for the future. Just look at his record as coach, pure genius, it will only take time for his system to click into place. Although Im an Argentine myself but I’m a big fan of Spanish football, not just the league but the national team aswell. Believe me Spain will qualify for the Euro Championships and I do predict a semi final birth, and why not perhaps even a winners medal. However as for Wedenesdays game, Vamos Argentina carajo!

I am a pure spanish in Australia who thinks Spain is a pure example of what real futbol is. Unlike seing Italy diving or France(Henry)faking it in the world cup, no one plays futbol like Spain. This upcoming game with Argentina is needed to win to boost Spain’s cofindence. Spain has every best player in the world, but issues in spain have been caused throughout the team aswell. Like provinces wanting independance have also being experienced in the team. But Spain will soon rise and become champions. Viva Espana!

    Argentina 4-1 Spain

Argentina is great at talking a good game. Witness their blogs both pre and post world cup.

Obviously Aragones is on the hot seat. Such talent on that team but no results, which afterall is all that matters.

I look forward to them beating Argentina and turning things around.

Ah Jimmy boy… One hit wonders, you’ll remember the 1-0 over England and the 3-2 over us for the rest of your lives so good luck to you! Btw I think you spelt it backwards buddy… I think you were meant to say “Northern Ireland is the MEAT” (not team)… The dead meat for España’s barbacoa once the group stages are over!Hahaha!!! You see amigo unlike Northern Ireland who constantly rely on the rest of Britain to represent them, España will atleast be at EURO 2008, so have fun watchin it on TV! P.S. The Northern Irish should aspire to be referees rather than footballers, that way they’d have more of a chance of actually going to a major football tournament hahahahahaha! “…A POR ELLOS…”

Hey John do you even exist?

Recite me more than 5 blogs on this entire database that show an Argentine talking a good game, and then try showing me more than 5 matches of the socceroos actually playing a good game! Only then you’ll have a right to make such comments. Make sure you use your ‘PARAGUA’ to protect u from the ‘bahRAIN’ tomorrow night hah!

    Sancho,
John is just a poor guy, he always provoke everyone with some stupid comments, he is one day french an other american or canadian, a thing is certain he has no life.

  • Sancho Pansa

Very true, I agree. Thanks for the tip Thierry I wont waste my time on that banana again. Btw do you get a chance to follow the beach football in France? I was wondering if Cantona is still part of the beach team and how the Euro champs are going so far

Daniel hit it right on the head; did not Spain win a good sportsmanship trophy in the World Cup; I myself like France enough; but what is right is right; Henry clutched his face hafter the brush up with Puyols, sheesh, 3 of the final four teams; were big on the cheating part. Maybe that is what it takes at time to win the World Cup; but I think we are seeing the fallout of such.

Yes, it does matter how you win; not pointing fingers at anyone, but there are plenty of countries that pull shenanigans at the World Cup, AFCON and other places.

“Some might ask, “How could they be the best team, if they lost?”
Aside from all the extenuating circumstances, (injuries, substitutions, coaching, officiating, etc…) the answer is simple:

    They didn’t lose.”

    What a Shame!!!!

“It is simply unbelievable that Italy can win a world Cup with that mediocre team and style of play.”

Do the other research yourself, I can’t be bothered re-reading those pathetic blogs of self pity.

I have not interest in the soceroos.

    Other than that take care.

    regards
    john

Espana won the Basketball Championships; though I like football/soccer; in basketbal, it is difficult to be cheating and at least to win in that way.

Sorry, I don’t mean to rant on this, but I think many were turned off by this World Cup and all of the antics.

“Unlike seing Italy diving or France(Henry)faking it in the world cup, no one plays futbol like Spain.”

This is pretty hypocritical coming from a Spaniard. I am from Spain and I love Spanish football. I think we have the best domestic league in the world — we play beautiful, attractive football, unlike Italy (and the French at their best also play very attractive football).

But anyone who knows Spanish football knows that there is a lot of diving in our game. I guess you don’t know much about Henry and why he exaggerated the foul in the penalty area during the France-Spain match. That penalty was legitimate, there was contact. Henry exaggerated the impact on him, but it was a perfectly legitimate penalty.

Anyone who watches Henry at Arsenal (my favorite club outside Spain) knows he is not known as a diver. He has publicly said that he was still angry about what Puyol and other Spanish players did to him and his team during the Champions League final between Arsenal and Barca last May. I love both clubs so it was hard to decide who to root for. But I understand his frustration at some of the tactics Barca used against him. He famously said “maybe I should roll around on the ground like a woman if I want to win trophies” or something similar. He was still angry that the referee in that match didn’t do anything about Barca’s tactics.

That’s why in Germany he made sure the referee in the game against Spain understood that real contact was made in the penalty area. Frankly I wish he hadn’t done it but we Spanish fans are just hypocrites when we complain about this kind of tactic, when our players do it all the time.

And Aragones should’ve been fired a long time ago. He’s why my support of my national team is not as strong as it should be. I don’t care about his past successes, he hasn’t been effective in a long time. And he’s a racist. I love Spanish football and our players, but I destest this coach.

John get real argentina will whip Spain in thier own backyard!
