Half a Quarter
In two more days, only eight teams will remain in the World Cup. We now know the names of four of them. The quarter-finals are halfway set and what a round it is shaping up to be. Already we have three former champions through with the prospect that three more could join them.
One marquee match-up has already been established with the host country taking on Argentina in a rematch of the 1986 and 1990 finals. Germany had a lot of doubters heading into the competition but with four straight wins and an entire country caught up in World Cup fever the Germans are looking like world beaters. They will get their biggest test to date against an Argentina team that is loaded with talent and offensive weapons.
The other quarter-final game that is set will feature an England team that has muddled its way through four games but has gotten the results it has needed. England’s offense has looked feeble at times, but its defense has been very solid. They will take on a Portugal team that survived a physical, emotionally draining match against Netherlands in which two of their players were sent off. England beat Portugal 2-1 in the 1966 World Cup semifinals, the last time before this campaign that Portugal advanced past the first round.
Four are set. Who will be the four teams to join them? Can’t wait to find out over the next 48 hours
