Group H: Google’s Fallible Prediction

By: WC Bob | May 1st, 2006 | 7 Comments »

Crystal BallOver the course of the past few months, World Cup Blog has offered its infallible predictions for each of the World Cup groups. We are so confident of the infallibility of our selections that we are willing to match wits with the smartest kids on the block: Google. Google Fight is a site that allows you to enter any two terms and the Google gurus tell you who would win in a fight. Today we played out this battle one last time with the Group F to see how our predictions compare to Google’s. Will World Cup Blog reign supreme in this clash of Internet titans?

Spain vs. Ukraine, June 14, Leipzig
Google winner: Spain
WCB winner: Ukraine

Tunisia vs. Saudi Arabia, June 14, Munich
Google winner: Saudi Arabia
WCB winner: Tunisia

Spain vs. Tunisia, June 19, Stuttgart
Google winner: Spain
WCB winner: Tie

Ukraine vs. Saudi Arabia, June 19, Hamburg
Google winner: Ukraine
WCB winner: Ukraine

Spain vs. Saudi Arabia, June 23, Kaiserslautern
Google winner: Spain
WCB winner: Spain

Tunisia vs. Ukraine, June 23, Berlin
Google winner: Ukraine
WCB winner: Tie

Group Winner
Google: Spain 9pts
WCB: Ukraine 7pts

Group Runner-Up
Google: Ukraine 6pts
WCB: Tunisia 5pts

Conclusion:
Google buys into the traditionally overhyped Spain team. We kind of do to, but Tunisia is a solid team that is going to do just enough to advance. Of all of our top group picks, Ukraine is the one that we think might crash and burn. This group might not have the sexiest teams, but it could be very wide open.

Group A: Google vs. WCB

Group B: Google vs. WCB

Group C: Google vs. WCB

Group D: Google vs. WCB

Group E: Google vs. WCB

Group F: Google vs. WCB

Group G: Google vs. WCB

I don’t know…the Spanish realize that this group should be a cakewalk, and there will be outrage if they don’t advance. I think the players as well know that this is a golden opportunity. Finish first here, and they might be playing South Korea–payback for 2002.

I don’t know why Ukraine is rated so highly. They have very little experience playing against non European teams.

Spain will qualify as the runner up of this group. Tunisia will shock everyone by winning this group!

This might be the first site ive seen that doesnt have spain winning this group. Gutsy call, but I find it very hard to be believe. Would be a complete disaster not to advance.
