Crystal BallOver the course of the past few months, World Cup Blog has offered its infallible predictions for each of the World Cup groups. We are so confident of the infallibility of our selections that we are willing to match wits with the smartest kids on the block: Google. Google Fight is a site that allows you to enter any two terms and the Google gurus tell you who would win in a fight. Today we played out this battle with the Group of Death to see how our predictions compare to Google’s. Will World Cup Blog reign supreme in this clash of Internet titans?

I “foresee” that both ARG and HOL are gonna have hell, trying to score agains S&M. But if they get an early one in, all the rest must be seen from a different angle. Having a rock solid defense WILL be a very strong card agains a shaky HOL and an ARG nobody seems to agree as to its real current form. It will at least wear them down.

In 98 HOL defeated ARG. I Actually think both of them were better then. And I am really, really curious to see the Elephants.

But this doesn’t mean it won’t be the usual suspects going through anyway…

Just went there to match POR and HOL and it gave HOL winning. I must say in this one, I’d put my $ on POR. Based on tradition (don’t even remember the last time we didn’t beat them) and current form.

My infallible prediction:
1. Serbia & Montenegro
2. Argentina
3. Holland
4. Cote d’Ivoire

Why? Well because Holland has an unstable defence, no structure, a team that is still in building up. Too mayn inexperienced players. The quality is good, but Marco van basten will fail.

Cote d’Ivoires defence is even worde. they play a fine attacking football, but they will recieve 3 goals each by Holland and Argentina and 2 from SCG.

Argentina will make it due to having a great coach and Lionel Messi.

SCG will make it because they have a very clever coach, one of the best defences in the world, and one good striker, which is Mateja Kezman.

I think Google has picked the right winners for this group. Holland still has some experienced players and Dutch football should never be under estimated. Argentina will no doubt make it through, what a boring world cup it will be if the star countries don’t make it! It’ll be like the last world cup!

While Bob’s picks really speak to the underdog in all of us, how many of us would put our own money on either Cd’I or S&M? Really.

Personally, I’d love to see the Elephants advance. Though I wouldn’t be surprised to see them get out, I can’t put my money on them.

As for S&M, Italy might be able to use their defense to earn championships, but that’s because they’ve got world-class strikers who will take advantage of their opportunities. Who on S&M will be able to score, giving them the 1-nil victory and 3 pts they surely will need to go along with 2 draws?

Realistically, we’ve got to tip the favorites. In addition to great talent, the Netherlands have two things going for them: 1) proximity to home means great fan support; and 2) Ruud will feel the need to vindicate himself against recent developments at Man U.

However, the Orange are young and always seem to find some internal reason to mess up.
Argentina, however, have the stars, the experience, and the coaching. Riquelme and Messi will be one of the pairs of the tournament.

Argentina – 1st
Netherlands – 2nd
