The paranoia over a catastrophe at the World Cup continues. Today German security expert Kaus-Dieter Matschke said that Google Earth poses a security risk for the World Cup. On the German IT site Heise, Matschke said that with the help of Google Earth’s accurate coordinates of certain places in Germany it would be easy for terrorists to launch Russian Scud missiles at various public targets. This is all very alarming except Google Earth uses GIS technology that has been around for years and the coordinates of German buildings is something my nerdy 14-year-old neighbor could figure out. The bigger risk is if you use Google’s prediction to bet on the World Cup. Now that would be a true catastrophe.
