Agreed. It reminded me of Bergkamp’s wonder from the ‘98 semifinal, just not quite as amazing. I said at the time that Maxi’s goal to beat Mexico was the goal of the tournament until someone upstages him. Grosso’s goal was close, as both showed great skill in the shot, and both had the timeliness, but Grosso’s lacked the trapping skill that Maxi’s had.

Yeah my vote definately goes to the Argentinian team goal (25+ passes!). It is always beautiful to see a team work together like that. It reminded me of the famous goal the Brazilians scored with the assist from Pele, except this argentinian one was better (IMHO).

Still don’t understand why people rate Maxi Rodriguez’ goal higher than Joe Cole’s. Joe Cole’s was from further away and a worse angle and beat a better goalkeeper – otherwise they were very similar (one from left, one from the right). Of course, it was the only decent goal England scored in the whole tournament!

Yes, Argentina had some nice goals and some great players and yet, they have to start a fight after the game against Germany. Is that the definition of a good team?

I liked Philip Lahm’s goal. The first of the tournament.

Maybe it is because Joe Cole’s was in the group stages and Maxi’s was in extra time in the Round of 16 so it was more significant. I agree though, they’re very similar and Cole’s does seem better.

Since we had no bicycle goals this time around, I’ll have to agree. I’d tie Maxi Rodriguez’s one and Joe Cole’s similar goal as number 1 though.

I dont understand…yes it was alright but I think bastian SCHWEINSEIGER’s goals were much better. Joe Cole was also great, a beautiful arch and landing straight in the net. I also liked fabio GROSSO’s corner goal as well…his reaction made it a whole lot funnier. That was pretty cute. And what about that penalty by zidane? That was so professional, the way he made it look like a speeding bullet.

The big difference between Maxi’s and Cole’s goals, is that Maxi killed a 30 meter pass with his chest and without a bounce of the ball, he hit it with his LEFT foot. Maxi is not lefty, mind you…

No problem with this choice, but I still think Torsten Frings’ goal in the opening game was a great way to get things started.

For me I think the best goal award should be given to Kone Bakary of Ivory Coast. I can saw desperation, passion and all SPEED of that strike. Ain’t any goalkeeper in the world gonna save that.

my vote goes to the Cambiasso goal, because there was no outstanding individual goal of brilliance besides a thunderous single shot, in other words, not an individual goal where the scorer dribbled past several defenders to score.

Sorry, but if you take a close look at Rodriguez’s goal, you’ll see that Sanchez is very late in moving to his right. When he does finally move, he still comes very close to saving it. Plus, the ball does not cross the goal line at the corner, but rather ends up there once it hits the back of the net. As pretty as the strike was, it was saveable, and GK error has at least as much to do with the goal as does the strike itself. Conclusion: not the goal of the tournament. Cole’s was much harder for a GK to read, as was Lamm’s. Heck, Kone’s goal for CIV vs. HED and both ITA strikes vs. GER in extra time were absolutely immaculate.

This post is for comments on “Goal Of The Tournament”, not for those like yourself who want to continue with the obsessive promotion of Zidane’s past talented plays. We do not dispute his talents, it’s just your non-ending fixation with him.

Then, the Italian’s own goal was a beauty too… Nicely done. They were lucky they are not from Columbia.

“The best goals for me:
1) Cambiasso’s goal against Serbia – Very high quality passing capa bilities
3) Zidane’s goal on Buffon – The King showing his stunning capability in making the best goalie look like an amature player
2) Maxi’s goal agaist Mexico – An abosultly beautiful strike (regardless of the time)”

Hehe… i thought his comment was UBER funny… cuz the second choice goal was a PENALTY SHOT… and was also a mistake by Zidane that happened to work out in the end… haha.. what a laugh…

Ugh… I was on vacation when the Mexico-Argentina game came on and Argentina is my #2 team so I’m disappointed I didnt see this goal and cant comment on it. I do however think it’d be hard to top Cambiasso’s goal cuz that just blew my mind!

“Zidane’s goal on Buffon”…how simple are you?

Grosso goal against Germany cant get a much bigger game or better goal.

“Zidane’s goal on Buffon” still cant believe you said that.
