Germans Working Hard to Become Friendly

What is a country to do when it has a reputation for being efficient, yet unfriendly? Use that efficiency to learn how to be friendly, of course. Germany has unveiled a company to help its cruel and heartless citizens smile upon the rest of the world this summer during the World Cup. Among other efficient and effective things, the campaign offers surefire tips to help service industry workers become “fit” in time for the World Cup.

A manual has been distributed to help service industry workers treat people from various cultures in a way that isn’t offensive.

For example, they are instructed to address Australians with “G’day” and to avoid giving them the V-shaped victory sign. “When the palm is pointed outward, this can be a rude insult for Australians,” the manual says.

According to our sources in Australia, there is only one problem with this. An outward pointing palm isn’t offensive, but an inward pointing one is an insult.

So there you have it. When you are Germany this summer and one of your hosts is rude to you, don’t blame them. Blame the German friendliness manuals.
