Forget Military Reform, Let’s Watch the World Cup

Lawmakers in Portugal have heeded World Cup Blog’s call for an international World Cup holiday by announcing today that Parliament will not be in session during Portugal’s match against Mexico on June 21. Instead of debating something silly like military reform, the lawmakers will be joining the rest of the conscious world in watching a game that could very well determine the winner of Group D. A true war it will be.

“What wouldn’t be acceptable would be for there to be no work that day. What we did was alter the schedule to allow the work scheduled for that day to take place by adapting it to the time of the game,” said Communist lawmaker Bernardino Soares.

There are still people who call themselves Communists. Ah, those were the days. But I digress.

Not everyone is pleased with this move, however.

“This sends a very bad signal. I don’t see how employers can now turn down employees who also propose changes in timetables when they want to watch football,” said Francisco van Zeller, president of the Confederation of Portuguese Industry.

Oh contraire. This sends exactly the right message. The World Cup holiday movement is growing. We will not be stopped until every man, woman and child can waste away an entire month watching football. Well done, Portugal!

[...] Finally, it wasn’t a match but 42,000 people showed up to watch Germany stretch during practice. Great effort by the host nation fans, who, like many others , are skipping work because of World Cup fever. Wish I could have been there. BTW, Bob, The Portuguese Comunist Party (PCP) is one of the oldest and very few european (old school) comunist parties still. For them, this social model is still “the” model”, although their role in current politics is not so anachronic.

They kinda owe their existence, to this day, due to ther role in the revolution, over 30 years ago which lead to the downfall of the fascist dictator and was also precipitated by the colonial war. Also to their mythic leader Alvaro Cunhal, recently deceassed.

Anyway, left or right, the parliement did the “right thing”… ;-)
