Early Candidate for Worst World Cup Commercial

By: WC Bob | April 5th, 2006 | 22 Comments »

We’ve shared some cool commercials that have been released ahead of the World Cup, but the one below falls far short of being cool or clever or even amusing. It does have a number of big name stars, however. Ignore the fact it is in Thai and let me know if you think it is any good. Makes me want to buy a Coke.

To see some of the best footie commercials ever, this is the best site around.

wow that hurt to watch. How many stereotypes can you fit into a commercial. They left out Kaiser Wilhelm in a spiked helmet and some sausage rings. You gotta love the corporate ad people.

ok, so the first time i watched the commercial I could not make heads or tales of it…but; in the interest of understanding why these players would subject themselves to this kind of torture, i watched it a few more times…here is my synopsis.

The players have stumbled upon a bunch of very drunk Bavarians (is there any other kind)…and since they could not get into the German National Teams training camp anyway, are scouting the kind of plays they will be encountering on the pitch if they play Germany. You gotta admit, there is a scary resemblance between these guys and Ballack, Podolski and Co.

Godddddd, I watched it again! The only redeeming value are the couple of cute frauleins you see briefly in it. There is a theatre in Zagreb, Croatia that shows commercials from around the world selected because they are interesting and entertaining, if they show this it’ll drive the viewers out in a mad rush.

I don’t know, I found this intriguing, almost brilliant in an absurdist kind of way. Seems almost appropriate holding the World Cup in a nation that produced Nietzche and was one of the centers of Dadaism.

Ok. Maybe if I could understand what they say, it would be ok (I hope it would), until then, yes, in fact it is one of the worst commercials ever.

Soze its a festival type showing once a year. First played in 2001 and has been to 160 cities. Its been so popular its become an annual affair. Go to http://www.adeaters.com to see the info. It plays in Oct. in Lisinski Hall. A great commercial I caught recently was for Coopers Beer. A real full cinematic production. Worth if you can hunt it down. Two groups of people rushing at each other in a field. You think they’re out to destroy each other when one group makes the shape of a face and the other becomes a beer bottle and the face starts drinking from the bottle. Crazy stuff, very creative. It one of those things where my kids (college age) called me in to see it. I started watching it and went-what the … - then just laughed my a** off. Might be on the VH1 website, it was off their videoclips show. Hope the info helps.

I remembered that beer commercial cos it was an Aussie beer. Think you’ll find it here:
http://www.bigad.com.au/

In fact, Carlton Draught has a few cool commercials. Enough to make me drink their beer above the other shite Aussie microbrews - well, maybe.

[...] We happen to like most of Puma’s World Cup kits this year, but we can’t say we are very big fans of the commercial below. You’d think with all the teams and players they sponsor they could come up with something better, but maybe you’ll enjoy the melding of hip hop and footie more than we do. This isn’t the worst World Cup commercial we have seen thus far, but we’re hoping for better in the weeks to come. [...]

Nice ad for Ronaldinho but I got a questions for you guys. Have you guys seen a Coca Cola ad, I think the theme was like… football uniting people. The ad had animations in them, featuring scientist n lab rat, butcher and chicken, etc… I would really like to download it.

[...] With the World Cup fast approaching, it is starting to become clear which advertising campaigns are good and which are worse than watching Saudi Arabia play Tunisia. Nike’s Joga Bonito commercials are great. Adidas also has some clever ads. Poor Pepsi, however, continues to churn out some real stinkers. A few weeks back we introduced you to this less than stellar effort. Today we offer the awful commercial below. Warning: this ad features the music of Christina Aguilera. It makes us feel sorry that Thierry Henry ever agreed to be part of this campaign. [...]

This ad was great. Let me illustrate why:

Will it make you buy Pepsi? Probably not.

Will it make NOT buy Pepsi? Again, probably not.

Will you remember it, and the Pepsi brand? Definitely YES.

Mission: Accomplished.

[...] Back in April I subjected you what at the time was an early candidate for the worst commercial of the World Cup. I still haven’t come across a worse advertisement, but I have noticed that a lot of people are quite fond of that Pepsi ad. I have no explanation for how it climbed as high as 11th in Google’s video rankings and how it is currently ranked 18th. In fairness, the last time I showed it to you it was in Thai. This time it is in English. Maybe you’ll like it better now. [...]
