Czech Republic Defeat Saudi Arabia in World Cup Tune Up

By: WC Bob | May 26th, 2006 | 5 Comments »

Milan Baros scored in the 15th minute and Marek Jankulovski converted a penalty kick in the 90th minute to lift the Czech Republic to a 2-0 win over fellow World Cup qualifier Saudi Arabia in a friendly played in Austria on Friday. Neither team looked like world beaters, but the Czech side did control the run of play in a match where both coaches substituted liberally in the second half. Saudi Arabia looks to be improved from four years ago, but I still think they’ll struggle in Germany.

Saudi Arabia next face Turkey on May 31, while the Czech Republic take on Costa Rica on May 30.

In other action of Friday, Ghana and Turkey played to a 1-1 draw.

Later on today the United States plays Venezuela. Stop by the USA blog during the match for a liveblog.

Results this week:

South Korea 1 Senegal 1

Croatia 4 Austria 1
Morocco 1 United States 0
Paraguay 2 Norway 2
Ecuador 1 Colombia 1
Australia 1 Greece 0
Sweden 0 Finland 0
South Korea 2 Bosnia 0
Ghana 1 Turkey 1

Nope. I watched it on a television channel called GolTV. I couldn’t find an online stream anywhere. I did look though.

I haven’t seen the match, but saudi’s starting lineup was interesting. Some key players didn’t play or brought in later in the game. Keeper (Khoja) was the third choice of the team. Nawaf was taken out early in the game. Sami Jaber played just a little bit, due to injury during the training. So not sure what you can make out of this. I assume both teams played careful game. They don’t want to have any kind of injury at this time.
