Critics Agree, Germany has No Chance of Winning World Cup
Germany’s World Cup roster is out and the reviews aren’t good. Togo coach Otto Pfister, winner of this year’s Slacker Coach Award, is particularly bearish on Germany’s chances. He says a quarter-final finish would be a success given the talent, or lack thereof, he sees on the host country’s team. “It’s quite simple, you need skill and Germany doesn’t have that. They don’t even know who to put on the pitch,” he said. Replace the word “Germany” with the word “Togo” and Pfister might be on to something.
Pfister is not the only one with doubts about the 19th ranked team in the world. Former German national football team captain Lothar Matthaeus said on Wednesday, “Based on my opinion, the German squad have no title chances at all.”
It seems the only one optimistic about Germany’s chances is the country’s sport minister Wolfgang Schaeuble, but he admits to being smacked as a little boy and the long term damage is starting to show.
All of this makes for wonderful drama. Can you imagine how boring it would be if Germany had the best team and was playing at home? This year we’ll really get a chance to see just how much of a difference the home field advantage can make and whether the German team can make all the doubters eat their words.
