Cristiano Ronaldo Transfer Auction on Ebay

By: WC Bob | July 6th, 2006 | 60 Comments »

It was only a matter of time. A well-known player gains the wrath of a nation and the next thing you know his transfer is being auctioned on Ebay. Such was the case with Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo who is just a wee bit unpopular in England these days. Here’s the ad blurb that was on Ebay before it was pulled down. I’m kind of hoping that Ronaldo’s exit from the World Cup will put an end to all the nonsense. He might or might not win the award for best young player, but he has undoubtedly been the most polarizing player this competition.

I think people should leave Ronaldo alone.

He is still a young player and needs time to develop. I agree that by the next World Cup we will see a different Ronaldo.

As for all the English fans that are complaining, did you really think Ronaldo was there to help England win?

I was sad to see England lose (I thought they could have made the final) but if they lost it was their own doing and not Ronaldo’s!

As for ManU, if I were them I would keep him. He is obviously a talented player, who under the right coach and system will shine.

Plus, the first game back will probably be the most watched game ever in soccer – you can’t buy press like that!

as for diving, that should be outlawed but it isn’t and Ronaldo is not the only one that does it.

I agree that it is ridiulous but what does that say about the game when even the talented players dive???

FIFA has to do something about the game! I agree with Claude and the changes he suggested. Especially for the penalty kicks too!

And too bad but Ronaldo is cute! ;) I would watch whichever team he goes to (and I am an Italian fan).

The ebay advert was so funny. Yes I know the Portugese love Ronaldo we have heard it so much. Yes he is not the only soccer player to dive we have heard that many times too. However Mr. Ronaldo seems to do it on a much more regular basis than most other players. If as you say he is so talented then why does he have to resolve to diving, I say let him stay on his feet and show us is extraordinary skills you say he has and prove the critics wrong.

kakakak the ebay article was hilarious ~ thanks for that!

i agree with Liliana – the English are hating Ronaldo becuz he got poor rooney in trouble , killed their team’s chance of winning …

if the english team was realli dat great, they could have made it thru without rooney!

it’s so lame of the eng to kick him out of the man U. team becuz their patrotic english pride is hurt – ronaldo came into the WC with a portugese shirt on his back – don’t expect him to be sympathetic to the English. As all that have played soccer knows – foul or no foul , players complain to the referee – same way that the accused players always protests to the ref about the decision, rightful or not. So stop blaming english’s bad luck on him

Claude, I agree with you. Things have got to change in the rules. They changed the ‘kick back to the goalie’ rule, this avoided some of the time wasting and in some aspects tried to make it a more attacking sport. I believe that there should be video ref. As a viewer of the TV match we seem to get a much better view than the ref and the spectators standing in the kop, as to what actually happens when a foul etc occurs. The ref gets one view dependant on his position, I think it is the only way to progress.
However the TV audiences view is also dependant on which team you support.

C Ronaldo is indeed no more than a cheater, an overrated brat, a diver, etc…

It’s no doubt his fault that Rooney stamped on Carvalho’s balls (I guess Ronney was too tired, like the others when the shootout came, so he really had to step on someone’s balls to feel good), FRA had always 3-4 guys marking him whenever he had possession (I guess it was just to carry on the mascarade, cos he’s obviously no good), he has been a “sand-bag” getting beaten up since the WC started, english players were scared shit whenever he lead the attack, Holland in the space of some 10 minutes kicked the guy quite violently that he had to leave the pitch, shall I go on…?

I guess this makes Portugal’s C Ronaldo a buch of animals…

It kinda surprises me most of the criticism against him, or Portugal, comes from english suporters – for who it’s apparently OK to step on someone’s balls, or from the dutch who did nothing more than diving, faking fouls, kicking really hard, etc, and the french coach, who knows perfectly well that in spite of all the talent and quality of his team, France only came back to the WC after an imaginary foul from Puyol and went to the final after an imaginary penalty from Carvalho. The germans were mainly on Portugal’s side, like Maradona, like the italians, etc…

So, I mean, that pretty much says it all. Portugal has been growing in world football, for the past 10-15 years. We have one of the best youth academys in the world. What I guess people fear, is not C Ronaldo’s dives, but the team’s potencial itself. I mean, England;s been after the tittle for so long, cos it’s been 40 years, cos there will always be the shadow of not having gotten there fair and square, and NOW, the guys that have been defeating them actually have a shot at it. As if it wasn’t difficult already to beat Italy, France squezed in “the club” 8 years ago…

The trend with the english is known all over, the dutch disapointed everybody, thre french surprised everybody but will loose Zidane (we’ll loose Figo but there’s plenty of quality back home for that spot), Italy and Germany, Brazil and Argentina are solid pillars. The last two fine underdogs were Turkey and Croatia, but they haven’t had a constant performance at high level, like Portugal.

Yeah… I’d be scared too, if I was english, for example… ;-)

Pedro P,

Before the WC began nearly a month ago, Ronaldo wasn’t too popular in the UK. He has always been temperamental and a bit of a drama queen in the English League. He did himself no favours with the English,(don’t forget they pay his ‘bread & butter” for the rest of the year) getting involved in the dispute with Rooney. He wasn’t involved in the situation but he took it upon himself to come and get involved with the ref. He should have let well alone, now he is getting the blame, the taunts and the abuse. If he thought he was big enough to take the responsibility of pointing out to the ref it was a foul! then he needs to have broad shoulders and take the slack and negative reports about him. You can’t have your cake and eat it.

Diane… I’m so fed up of this stupid fight. Just because english and dutch don’t know how to loose and tend to act like little brats, with no notion of respect or values… It kinda hurt to see you put there, on national TV, also Miguel’s injury. I’m sorry, but that says everything about some people’s, or nation’s, character.

Uncle Adolf was defeated by you, some 50 years ago. But he’d sure be proud of the english and the dutch, right now… For having absorbed the right way of thinking and acting…

Sincerelly, better luck next time, for the english or the dutch. I’ve even lost that desire of beating you on the pitch again. Really. It’s beyond that… Let Sweden kick England’s ass again and Germany or Turkey kick Holland’s. We too have our all time nemesis (coincidently, they are FRA and ITA – I guess it wasn’t meant to be for us, this time). To be honest, I only wish our national teams (POR, ENG, HOL) never meet again, and that portuguese (extremelly low budgeted) teams keep on beating english teams in the champions league, portuguese players and coaches keep on being successfull in England.

The only thing I agree with you, Diane, is that indeed C Ronaldo will not get the next nobel prize… He is a tad stupid. Both in his behaviour as well as in his game. But being stupid is not the same as being evil or coward.

i agree with a lot of the suggestions claude said but i think the offsides rule is necessary. what else is stopping teams from keeping a player right next to the goal so that the long ball can be passed to them? goalies need some help..

in hockey they give penalties for diving.

maybe if they gave out yellow cards for diving then players wouldn’t do it.

I think that the only reason that players get away with it is that one ref can’t see everything. They should have video replay, especially if players protest too much and then if it was really a dive, they can be given yellow or even red cards for wasting the ref’s time and for slowing the game down.

LUIS FIGO POR 23
TONI Luca ITA 23
C.RONALDO POR 21
COLE Joe ENG 20
BALLACK GER 18
KAKA BRA 18

This’s the fouls suffered list for this WC (FIFA source)… maybe sometimes you dive ’cause you had enough of faulty tackles that endanger your career (remember what happened to Eusebio, Pelé, Van Basten…). That’s the only way of some «rugby» players overcome talent. Is it an accident that the best portuguese forwards are on the top of the list? C.Ronaldo will keep on terrorize defenders and try to avoid tackles or bad injuries, even if he has to dive… In this WC, C.Ronaldo was the only player that when got the ball only had eyes to the goal… I like his kind of football, he runs, he dribles, he shoots, it’s football not kick and run or just defend around and wait for a penalty kick or a corner to score… that’s football! That’s C.Ronaldo way!

I noticed that alot of people especially English fans have jumped on the RONALDO DIVES bandwagon, ALOT of soccer players dive, but Ronaldo is getting flamed for it like no other soccer player, and he is accused of diving when he may not be. Sorry but I think kicking someone in the privates is worst then diving. Also Iam glad Ronaldo is trying to leaving Manchester United. About him being a crybaby, well I have seen plenty of players cry whether they win or lose this world cup. I think most of the people talking Ronaldo are jealous of him and wish they were playing in a World Cup, instead their making judges. I seen Ronaldo play in about 3 matches, and he has alot of talent, and alot of maturing to do. But what young soccer players doesn’t. All the Ronaldo hate makes me like him even more.

“I seen Ronaldo dive 5 times against Germany or 2 times against France”, Iam like get a original idea already, Cause I nor the refs see all this diving.

England lost because they didn’t score a goal , not because Ronaldo caused Rooney to be Red Carded for kicking someone in the nuts. The Ref was right in red carding Rooney. When he gets another Red card next season..who is getting the blame then?

Also Is Rooney a good role model….

English fans understand that Rooney should have been sent off for what he did and English fans also realise that we didn’t play well throughout the tournament. The problem with Ronaldo was highlighted by the fact he ran 10-20 yards to get involved, he then pushes an already angry Rooney and once the Red card was shown he then decides to wink at the bench. Ronalso has been diving all season in the premiership which just does not go down well with the English. If Ronaldo stayed out of the way he would not get the grief he is getting now. Let’s also remember that before this game it was reported that he was going to Real Madrid and now he has the best reason for leaving England.

The English fans expect but the team never deliver

i agree with most ppl here. cristiano is still young, and he is not the only diver in the history of football. In football you have to 4get ur opponent and only think of him as an enemy! when Cristiano played against England he only saw enemies, he didnt see rio ferdinand or gary neville nor rooney (his man utd team mates) he plays a bit like maradona. maradona doesnt care who he’s playing against, all he saw was enemies, and thats true football. Cristiano doesnt suit the english league, he is more suitable for the italian and Spanish leagues. all i know for sure is that the Spanish fans are very fond of him. the only reason why cristiano was “booed” against france and Germany was becuz the English fans were present at the match. besides i find Rooney a much more dirty player than Cristiano. Cristiano has nothing to be blamed on, and he shud have won The Best Young Player of the year award..Podolski hardly deserved it.

I admire a lot of english people I Know and I believe this sad thing of denigrate the way we have seen a talentd young player and a national team is the result of a few stupidity. Reading all that stuff I think we are able to understand better hooligan phenomena in england.I`m glad they can talk of their delusions and express their feelings. It´s maybe a kind of therapy.
