Coupet Temporarily Walks Out of French World Cup Camp

By: WC Bob | May 24th, 2006 | 9 Comments »

Gregory Coupet either doesn’t like alpine climbing or he is still upset with being named France’s second string keeper. The details aren’t entirely clear at this point, but Coupet apparently walked out on France’s training camp Wednesday only to return a half hour later where he reportedly engaged in a heated discussion with coach Raymond Domenech and France assistant coach, Bruno Martini. Coupet’s temporary departure took place on a day in which the French team was supposed to be bonding while hiking up a glacier together.

Coupet’s nemesis, number one keeper Fabien Barthez, cut his hike short after experiencing calf pain. Slacker.

Whether or not this is what triggered Coupet’s apparent tantrum is not known. If I am a France fan I wouldn’t be too thrilled with the way things are shaping up at their mountain training camp. At least no one has been gassed in their sleep in the last 24 hours.

Assuming Barthez’ injury is serious and Coupet is suspended for walking out, who will be in net for the equipe?

Mickael Landreau is the third keeper but I don’t see any way that he ends up being used. Bathez will be fine and Coupet will either come to grips with being second string or he’ll be sent home with an “injury.”

Why does the French coach prefer the terminally unreliable Barthez over the solid Coupet? I really do not understand that…

Barthez, another one that Sir Alex spat out and has not been the same since. He is living on memory and name only!
