Copa America: Mexico Advances, Argentina and Paraguay Look to do the same
The fun and games continued this weekend in Venezuela this past weekend with the Copa America proving to be one entertaining football tournament. Mexico is the only team thus far to have secured a spot in the knockout round. They have advanced thanks to a pair of victories over Brazil and Ecuador. It is funny to think that before the tournament began there were so many questions hanging over a Mexican side that lost to the US in the Gold Cup final just last weekend. They have looked solid during their Copa America run.
The questions still remain for Brazil even after they beat Chile 3-0 behind Robinho’s hattrick on Sunday. The world powers have played largely lackluster football to date and will need to get a result against Ecuador to advance in the competition. Ecuador, meanwhile, has not looked like the team we saw advance to the World Cup second round a year ago.
On Monday night we could see a couple of more teams advance to the knockout round. Argentina put the hurting on the United States in their first game and now they face a Colombia side that is coming off a 5-0 loss against Paraguay, a team that will also advance with a victory against the United States.
Here are the highlights from the games to date in the 2007 Copa America.
Brazil 3-0 Chile
Mexico 2-1 Ecuador
Uruguay 1-0 Bolivia
Venezuela 2-0 Peru
Paraguay 5-0 Colombia
Argentina 4-1 USA
Peru 3-0 Uruguay
Venezuela 2-2 Bolivia
Mexico 2-0 Brazil
Chile 3-2 Ecuador
