Colombia says Adios to 2014 World Cup Bid
And then there is one. It looks all but certain that Brazil will host the 2014 World Cup now that Colombia has pulled out of the running. Colombia broke ranks with the rest of the continent in offering a bid but they never had the backing of the kingmakers at FIFA or within their own federation. The final word will be announced later this year, but go ahead and book your tickets to Brazil right now. They will be running the show in 2014. Time to take some samba lessons.

As a CONCACAF person, I think the ramifications of this are positive, as far as the chances of a North American country hosting the 2018 World Cup.
Brazil is firmly in South America, of course. My worry is that if Colombia somehow got the bid, Sepp Blatter (or whoever) could say, “Well, Colombia is pretty close the North American continent — in fact, it is close enough! The 2018 World Cup will go back to Europe!”

Regarding North America, Mexico has already hosted twice, USA hosted in 94, I guess for 2018, it wouldn’t bee too soon a return. But does anyone know if any other countries would be capable to host the WC, even as joint bids?

It’s gotta be in Europe. With South Africa and Brazil not only being non-european but also poor, the FIFA people will be dying to go somewhere safer.
