Coaching Carousel Goes Round and Round

By: WC Bob | April 10th, 2006 | 1 Comment »

After months of speculation, Guus Hiddink has finally announced that he is likely to end up as the next coach of Russia. Apparently he prefers vodka and caviar over tea and scones. Meanwhile, Portugal’s Luiz Felipe Scolari and Brazil’s Carlos Alberto Parreira are part of an all star cast of coaches that South Africa is targeting for their vacant coaching position. Also in the running for the Bafana Bafana position is Sven-Goran Eriksson whose England job is coveted by Scolari. Confused? So are we. Remember the good old days when coaches focused on their current teams and waited until after the World Cup to play the game of musical chairs? We can’t understand what the big rush is anyway. It’s not like Russia and South Africa need coaches tomorrow. Nor does England’s FA need to announce a new coach while Sven is still on the bench. And where is the obligatory mention of Bora Milutinovic in all this? By international law he should be a candidate for every vacant coaching position.

I think coaches are still focused, but the teams are not. Big Phil already said he won’t consider any proposal until the World Cup has ended. Parreira follows this mentality too. The coaches want to win now, while team managers are thinking about the future.

Same thing happen to players, when teams are hunting them before the WC, it’s not healthy to the player’s national team. They must be able to keep focusing the WC instead of pursuing a greater salary.

That can only harm his own career.
