Brazil Fans Burning Mad

Fans of Brazil’s football team are not used to seeing their team lose very often, but that doesn’t mean they don’t know how to react like upset fans worldwide. For some, their anger and disappointment was expressed through jeers as the team’s plane landed in Brazil. For others in the southern town of Chapeco, they expressed their feelings by burning down a seven-metre tall statue of Ronaldinho.

The resin and iron statue was installed in the town two years ago when the Brazil midfielder won his first World Footballer of the Year award. No word yet on the parties responsible for its destruction, but if I were investigating the incident I would be interrogating the executives at Nike right about now.

5000 fans welcome Argentina suqad (4 Jul 2006 05:25 GMT)

Approximately 5,000 fans welcomed a part of the Argentina World Cup squad at the Ezeiza airport in Buenos Aires on their return from Germany. Despite Argentina’s elimination at the hands of Germany, the fans waited until the early hours of Monday morning for the players and outgoing coach Jose Pekerman, waving flags and scarves. On arrival the party was welcomed with chants of encouragement, and the coach stopped to sign a few autographs.

Of the 23-man squad, Juan Roman Riquelme, Maximiliano Rodriguez, Javier Mascherano, Esteban Cambiasso, Gabriel Heinze, Gabriel Milito, Fabricio Coloccini, Luis Gonzalez, Lionel Scaloni, Rodrigo Palacio and Oscar Ustari have returned to Argentina

  • Antonio Domingo

Brasilian fans don’t know how to take losing gracefully. I remember when they lost to Nigeria in the Olympics. Some Brasilians burned down the Nigerian embassy in Brasil. Sore losers.

    Forca Portugal!

  • Kiko

The only Brasilian players that had the courage to return to Brasil, were the ones that play there and the captain Cafu. The rest were way too scared to even show up.

Well, when I said that everything other than the 1st place was considered a disaster, I wasn’t kidding. This happens all the time when Brazil doesn’t get home as the World Cup winners.

Hopefully next time the pressure of winning by a landslide will be on the shoulders of other nation so we will be the ones laughing when they get home with nothing.

Kiko: most of them actually *live* in Europe and have part of their families there, so it’s not a matter of returning “to Brazil” or not, but rather “go to Brazil to answer press questions then come back”, or “return home to my family on Spain/France/etc”.

If they don’t burn down a statue now, how can they erect one again …four years hence? It is also a grim reminder for all celebrities who love being treated like Gods.

  • Coffeeholic

The problem is not that we lost the world cup.. The problem is HOW we lost it. If the players fought and showed some attittude like the arngentinian or the portugal team in the game we would welcome them with a big party here in Brazil.. But that was not the case.
The fu**ing players were even laughing after the game ended. They don’t care about the World Cup. They only care about the $$$ in their pockets.

  • ShuRee

If i was them I would be scared to return to if anyone can Burn down a statue of a man because their team didn’t win only god knows what they would do to him if they saw him. I don’t care Ronaldinho will always be my fav. footballer.

  • al

well soccer, heck football, is a national obsession in brazil. the people know that the team had everything needed to win except two things: hunger and leadership.
what pisses me off is that the elder primadonnas like ronaldo, cafu and roberto carlos seemed more concerned about records than anything else: I could care less about ronaldo’s 15 goals in 3 cups and several weaker teams and take mueller’s 14 in two cups, fontaines 13 in one cup.
some of the new primadonnas were selfish like adriano or completely below expectations like ronaldinho. I think we saw the birth of true leadership, hunder to win and passion in robinho who came in everytime to give it all. fred who came in to give it all. cicinho and kaka who despite being visibly exhausted was the creator in the midfield. ronaldinho? I am willing to give him a second chance but he has to earn his place or stay in europe.

  • Azam Khan

I tell you the only resposible person for the defeat of Brazil was Roberto Carlos. As when Zeedan was going to shoot the free kick diagnol, he was responsible to cover, mark and disturb Henry. Consequently Henry was not be able to score the goal so easily and freely.
At that time Carlos was putting hands on his hips and then trying to check his socks.Tell me…isnt not criminal??
    Comment.
In 1998 WC final, Roberto Carlos made the mistake in defence where French got the corner and scored their first goal. Do you remember??

Roberto Carlos does not have any right to play in a team like Brazil

  • Sonny

It is true that Brazil did not perform too impressively so I can understand the fans being mad at their attitude… but it is also true that Brazil is famous for being over ambitious. You can’t have it every time. And you can’t go around burning things when you don’t get what you want.

  • ETucker

    Azam-

All Brazilians are notoriously bad at defending setpieces. Roberto Carlos is one of many.

Zizou’s two goals in France 98 came odd headers from corners. How can you NOT mark Zizou on a corner?

The fans of Brazil should get used to the fact that the days of the samba boys are numbered. It will take a long time for them to win the world cup again. Other nations have caught up to their style and game plan. Go back and watch the video of when they played Ghana. Though Ghana eventually lost, the Black Stars outplayed the Samba Boys.

  • El Alacrán

No, the Brazilians didn’ burn down the Nigerian embassy just because they lost in the Olympics. Is everyone on this board 14 years old?

  • El Alacrán

Good god, it happens. “It will take a long time for them to win the world cup again.” Anyone, Brazilian or otherwise, who has even a remote sense of history and the passage of time, knows this. It took 24 years for Brazil to win its 4th star and another 8 for the 5th. I can’t help but think everyone talking here is a teenager because I’m seeing no evidence that anyone knows anything about anything more than 4 years old. Brazil, like ANY World Cup team, has a long history of LOSING during the tournament. They also have won it more times than anyone else, which is where the high expectations come from.

  • Adigun Ajayi

I am a football expert and I am surprise no one has been able to mention the fact that Brazil lost that match technically. France coaching crew were more technically superior than Brazil’s. From all their matches before meeting France you will all agree that ronaldinho was the engine house. Making near faultless passes to Ronaldinho, Caca and others to score. All France did was to make sure Zidane outplayed him in that zone by ensuring other players swamped and removed the ball from Ronaldinho everytime he get’s the ball. Brazil technical crew did not recognize this until it was too late when they brought in a new go to player. Then Brazil started playing their “Brazillian soccer” but it was too late.

  • http://hotmail JOUALIHAMID

BRAZIL IS A TEAM OF STARS, BUT NOT A TEAM OF GOOD PLAYERS TO LEAD THEM TO WIN THE WORLD CUP.

  • Claudio

First; Mr. Antonio Domingo don’t know what He’s talking about– There was never an incident of Brazilian fans burning Nigeria’s Embassy.–Second: Adigun Ajayi is correct the main problem was the coach. When He did some substitutions, the team started playng a lot better but was too late. Third — The problem w/ the brazilian fans is not that they loose.. It is the way it was. Individualy they are the best players but there was no leadership or team play, as well as players that not had the will to win.

There-there now futebol fans, say what you want, but the Brazilian’s domestic foundation in the futebol arena will continue to place a national team. They will be favorites again. They will be back. Out with the old and in with the new. I expect Robinho, kaka, and Fred to return. I agree with al from the USA. Good luck to France, Germany, Italy, and Portugal.

  • John Lierman

Brazilian fans have the right to be mad. Brazil’ top stars played under-average for most of their games, Robinho should have played ALL THE TIME instead of porky Ronaldo. Ronaldinho was oversold by Nike and the media (the entire Brazilian team was) and was nothing more than a mediocre player. France played like Brazilians should have. Everybody waited for Brazil to deliver on all the hype, and …nothing in the end. I’m glad they are out of this World Cup.

  • Dr Raj Bawa

Brazil will be back in S. Africa in four years and win in all!!

  • Massimo

Brazil might fail to qualify if they play like that

this happened in the last world cup when brazil lost to cuba in the quarter finals . the brazilians bombed havana and that sparked the cold war

Massimo: still pissed because of 1994? Let it go, man. You’ll soon have new people to hate.

  • Tati

I guess the good thing about Brazilians is that they’re not whining and blaming referees, France, or making any pathetic excuses. I think these guys lost graciously actually. They didn’t pick fights, didn’t throw bitter hissy fits and showed the respect due to their opponents. I think Brazilians need to pay closer attention to how some of the other losing teams are reacting and appreciate the fact that our team, at least, are acting like men and not whiny little boys. I think this works for our adavantage in that they’ll be working on improving their game and fixing their mistakes as opposed to some of the other teams who are blaming everyone and their sister and think they played perfectly and, most likely, will not have improved much 4 years from now.
I don’t believe for a minute that these guys WANTED to lose, who does? They’re living the dream playing in a World Cup representing their country. As much as I, as a fan, wanted them to win, I think they wanted it 10x more, and as disappointed and sad as I was, I think they were much more. These guys are under immense pressure from EVERYONE, not just Brazil. I mean, isn’t it bad enough the Argentinean press, as well as many others are having a great time kicking them when they’re down? Must Brazilians join them as well? Where’s the loyalty? They’re only decent people as long as they’re winning? They’re just human, people.
I hate the way the team played that last game, and for the life of me I’ll never understand why Parreira waited so damn long to make the changes that EVERYONE else knew had to be made– but what’s done is done. I have faith that, very much like it happened in 1998, this will be motivation for Brazil to make a comeback with a stronger resolve and determination. Maybe, hopefully, with time, the brazilian public will be a little more optimistic about this (lol one can only hope *sigh*).

  • http://AOL Steve

Another team that was over-hyped, over paid, and overcome by the quality of the worlds soccer teams. Just because you are Brazil doesnt mean you can ignore the quality of international talent elsewhere in the world. Consider it a wake up call.

  • http://jibber62aol.com pete

Brazil is still the best team in the world, and will always be my favorite. No one has the evolved style on the pitch that the Samba team does. Best technically, best team play, best tactics. France was twice as tall as Brazil. Think about it.
Go back and watch the taped game, with the height differential in mind. They taught the world how to play the beautiful game. Be proud of your team. Support them.Tati was right that were gracious gentleman. Perhaps you could learn from them.

  • Vico

I like Brazil. I was hoping they would win it all since Mexico didn’t get past the round of 16, however, as much as they have the most talented players and the most successful of World Cup histories…they are not – as of right now- the best team in the world; if they were they would be playing in the tournament. It is irelevant whether France was a taller team, it doens’t matter; if you are truly the best at the time you’re supposed to prove to the world that you are,… then you get to the Finals and win the cup. Brazil didn’t do it. Hope they are back with a vengance in South Africa and win it all…tht is, if Mexico falters again.

  • cariaco

The Brazilians think that they can win every World Cup with their selfish players…. They can’t play as a TEAM and the country should learn to expect failure from now on. Maybe if the Brazilians would keep their mouths shut, they wouldn’t jinx it.

  • Pádraig

i think brazil are still a brilliant team. it just wasnt their year. its when they are not expecting they perform well. pele said before the tournament that the faveourites never win and he’s right.

  • sdbhffkjgk

Brazil is still DEFINENTLY the best team in the world
besides everyone has a bad world cup sometimes…just like France had a bad World Cup in 2002….
Brazil will be back in 2010 and win it all….
every player on Brazil is AMAZING… ESPECIALLY Ronaldinho, and Kaka.
Ronaldinho and some other players on Brazil jst had a bad Cup this year….but they will definently be back in 2010 and win…..they are by FAR the best team in the World

  • kofi

if it wasnt for the brazilian defence not marking henry i would bet u they would still be in the world cup. To everyone that says brazil is selfish, go watch the tape they pass more than any other team.

Ronaldhio played so has zidane in the world cup.

Brazil has been in 3 world cup finals in a row, they won 2. In 2002 they won all seven games and they won the first 4 in this world cup. Then they lose because they didnt mark frances best striker, that was a mistake and now they suck. Go find another team with that resume

  • kofi

brazil has been in the last 3 world cups and won 2 in 2002 they won all seven games were ronaldhino was spetaculer, they won the first 4 in this tournement. They lose a game making a mistake and leaving henry unmarked. Then suddenly the suck. Name another country with that resume .

  • Basmah

It’s really dumb to say that Brazil sucks,’cos clearly, they don’t. It just wasnt their World Cup.I understand that people are disappointed that they didn’t make it to the semi-finals, because people expect great things from them, but burning down statues is just going to far. People need to calm down and chill a bit, it’s just football! They are only humans and they can mess up, it’s life! Best of luck to them in 2010.

P.S They need a new coach.

  • Tati

I agree with the above. At this point, I think the so called “fans” are more embarrassing than Brazil losing.

  • Framingham

Yea! No more Brazilians celebrating in the streets of my community after a win! Brazilians GO BACK TO BRAZIL! OUT OF FRAMINGHAM!!!

  • john doe

Brazil’s won more world cups than any team ever. They are still the power house of the world cup. They lose once and burn a statue to the ground? Their fans are a bunch of spoiled children. I hope Brazil never wins again b/c their fans don’t deserve it.

  • juanchope

Brazilian belive they re the best in a world of soccer and they show on the world cup that they’re fucking looser
