Billions of Eyes on the World Cup

Even if you haven’t read the research, chances are you would guess that this will be the most watched World Cup in history. Thanks to the growing popularity of football around the world, the tournament being played in a European time zone and some larger countries providing the games for free, more eyes than ever before will tune in for the tournament. There are some interesting numbers regarding the level of interest in various countries.

For example, which three countries draw the highest average ratings per match for international football tournaments?

The answer: Brazil, Argentina and the Netherlands.

Just as they have been tapped as on the field favorites, Brazil also is predicted to win the ratings battle with the highest average rating per match.

That might help to explain the answer to this question. Which team will have the most people watch it during the first three games?

Give up?

The answer is Japan, which not only plays against Brazil but which also will have a huge following throughout Asia and in-country as well.

As for the overall numbers of people expected to watch the World Cup, 28 billion people in aggregate are expected to tune in at some point during the tournament, with 1.2 billion, or 17 percent of the world’s population, tuning in for the July 9 final.

The other 83 percent of will be clicking the remote searching in vain for something more interesting than watching 22 men in shorts kick a ball. I wish them well in their existential efforts.

I have trouble believing that Brazil will not be the most-watched country.

Every football fan in the world is interested in Brazil. In fact, I’m pretty sure there are many who only watch Brazil, and their national team.

People who don’t give a hoot about the World Cup don’t know what they are missing. It’s their loss, never football’s.

We love the World Cup here in New York City! More of my friends are interested than ever before after 2002’s outing! I’m rooting for England, then USA, then pretty much just having a blast watching the drama unfold. In NYC the majority of people are rooting for Brasil, England, Italy and USA, in that order. It’s great to see it’s catching on here regardless, ABC and ESPN are doing a great job of coverage. I hope one day we’ll shut down our jobs and watch footie for a month every four years together, but at least we’re making progress!

[...] A lot of records could be broken this World Cup. More people than ever before will tune into watch. Brazil is going for an unprecedented sixth championship. Hooligans everywhere could wreak havoc like never before. And more money will be gambled than on any sporting event in history. With all of the money flowing into gambling houses around the world, it is kind of interesting to see how people are wagering their money and the odds that are being given by the bookmakers in various countries. In my opinion ,our fans should love ourselves more than Ronaldinho, Kaka , Henry, Riquelme and so on .However, most of us can not
do it well.
