Big Question: Who is the Fastest World Cup Player?

This past weekend I was over at a friend’s house and we were playing a footie video game. It was a great game except for a couple of things. First, the game control had about 38 buttons and I could never figure out which one is used for long passes. When you have to use the letter “x” to label a button you know the game is too complicated. The second thing was that Luis Figo was an absolute speed demon in the game. I’m not so sure that Figo could beat my 8-year-old nephew in a race these days. But this did get me thinking about some of the players who have video game speed in real life – guys who are fast with a ball and who can blaze by defenders. Here are some of the top speed guys we’ll see this summer.

Gianluca Zambrotta, Italy – Sometimes I think this guy chose the wrong sport. He could win an Olympic sprinting medal.

Thierry Henry, France – His speed is really deceptive. It doesn’t look like he is even running hard but then he leaves the defenders in the dust.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal – I think the video game makers confused Figo with Ronaldo.

DeMarcus Beasley, United States – He is a blur out wide, which is a good thing since he weighs about 98 pounds and would get killed if he didn’t have speed.

Roberto Carlos, Brazil – He’s lost a step, which still places him five steps ahead of most players.

Agree or disagree, who do you think is the fastest player?

  • http://www.bensefels.de Bense

I dunno if Jansen wil play for Germany, he’s a backup defender, on of the fastest I’ve ever seen. Sometimes even too fast for his own good.

  • Gibb

Hehe, I first had read: “who is the FATTEST World Cup player?”

  • http://www.worldcupblog.org/world-cup-2006/big-question-which-current-coach-was-the-best-player.html#comments Pedro P

Figo isn’t as fast as he was but he’s still quite fast. Ronaldo is very fast.

Anyway, no matter how fast they both are, I still think any italian – they’ve specialyzed in playing only counter – could still beat them, as long they’re running with the boal towards goal. Pace and technique is more Portugal’s style, not so much pure speed.

  • PeterG

    Arjen Robben is pretty fast.

  • soze

Michael Owen, Midget Gem, The Boy Wonder….whatever you wanna call him, he’s fast.

  • http://portugal.worldcupblog.org Luis Paulo

Eto’O is the faster player in the world, however he is not at this World Cup.

  • http://www.worldcupblog.org/world-cup-2006/big-question-which-current-coach-was-the-best-player.html#comments Pedro P

Bob, this is what I found (courtesy dutch blog) about speed:

“Speed is often confused with insight. When I start running earlier than the others, I appear faster.” (”Snelheid wordt vaak verward met inzicht. Als ik eerder ga lopen dan de rest, lijk ik sneller.”)

    Apparently it’s J. Cruyf’s saying… ;-)

  • Dido

I think Henry is the fastest player. If he ran any faster, he would lose control of the ball.

  • james

I have always thought a key metric of footballer speed is how well they run with the ball and michael owen is very fast with the ball at his feet.

Any other players who don’t miss a step when they are on the ball?

I heard that Claudio Caniggia had absolutely blazing speed but i can’t clearly remember ever seeing it in action.

  • james

and Pedro’s (or Cruyf’s) comment is insightful. very true. some guys see it before others and look fast I am thinking of Figo and Zidane for some reason and others (Djibril Cisse) are very fast but seem lost at times.

  • Jason

its henry for sure…his uncle holds the French 100m record!

  • Neo

Zambrotta is definitely one of the fast defenders at the World Cup..that’s why it will be a shame if his recent injury forces him out of the WC…because I can’t love anything more than Zambrotta starting his classical attacking runs on the left..

  • paul

cisse is the fastest player in the world, without a shadow of a doubt!

  • wayne

why is this a discussion, everyone knows thierry henry is the fastest person to ever lace up a pair of footie boots

  • http://c ronaldo

thierry henry and theo walcott are the two fastest players in da world 4 shore and

  • http://worldcupblog s+a

henry and c.ronaldo are the fastest ever known so deal with it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Nck

Player times in a 100m race (seconds):

    David Odonkor: 10.9

    Roberto Carlos: 10.8

    Thierry Henry: 9.97

    Henry takes the cake!!!!

  • http://www.beli-orlovi.com milan

I think the fastes football player is THIERRY HENRY(with the ball in his feet) but the fastes player in normal runing is MARTINS.

  • Nck

    To milan
Check on google Martins runs the 100m in 11 secs so Theirry Henry is still faster however he is probably not as fast as he used to be as he is much older than he was when he did it in 9.97

  • swin

djibril cisse is faster than henry…..sinama pongolle said when training with france that cisse’s speed was unreal, and he was the fastest runner in the sprint tests the team has, wit henry included.

  • Asier

I think the fastets player is Ryan Giggs 5 years ago I am pretty sure he could leave back thierry henry, with the ball on his feet too.

Overmars was very very fsat too.

  • Manu4life

u know most people say henry is fast probly is but it doesnt matter

  • Asier
  • http://yahoo.com erasmus mwangi

definitely France’s thierry henry. He takes after dutch sprinter Marc overmars who opted to play football instead.

  • http://www.worldcupblog.org/world-cup-2006/big-question-who-is-the-fastest-world-cup-player.html kieron

i think thierry henry, theo walcott or obafemi martins r probaly da top 3 bruv

  • Sam

i think its either theo walcott, obafemi martins or c.ronaldo

  • http://www.worldcupblog.org/world-cup-2006/big-question-who-is-the-fastest-world-cup-player.html kieron

dem free out of 1 of dem r da fastest in world football FULL STOP.

  • lionel

HENRY can run 10.9 if lucky, obafemi martins is the quickest, believe me, he is full of power just like jason robinson, walcott can run like 11.2 by now, but there people like bellamy, believe me, i know, i can run 10.95

  • http://fg.com Marc

LOL! Henry having 9.97 I find hard to believe as the world record is 9.78!!

that means he is 0.19 slower than the fastest man on earth!!

I am sorry, but I find that hard to beleive.

How on earth you can miss SWP and Robben out for speed is beyound me!

The player for which I have heard is faster than Whalcott and henry is Scott Sinclair.

    He has sheering pace!!!

  • tom

Thers no question. Its christian dailly. without a doubt

  • danny

rommedahl takes the cake he can run 100m in 10.2

  • Paulos

Djibril Cisse all the way, according to sinama pongolle he is the fastest in all of frances sprint tests…that includes henry too!

  • http://www.haha.com phizzzle“

evra is the fastes in the premiership

  • http://www.nazis.lv kroplitis

Kačā ! Anrī riktīgi iekāčā lol!

  • jonathan baker

it says on wikipedia that phil jagielka can run 100m in like 10 secs

  • jonathan baker

it says on wikipedia that phil jagielka can run 100m in like 10 secs

  • Me

To be onist if any 1 says that any footballer can do the 100m in under 10 seconds is an idiot. Some professional athleetes cannot do it under 10 seconds

  • paulLFC

djibril cisse, lennon or walcott. one of them is my choice as the fastest player in the world. For all those who think roberto carlos is or was the fastest check this out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLAF1kDBevM….left for dead..and that was years back when he was in his prime!

  • PaulLFC

the link i posted above doesnt work..sorry, just type in mendy vs carlos on youtube for that vid

  • Steve

    Hahahahaha

    Henry 9.97 secs ?!!! LOL !!!

That would of given him one of Carl Lewis’ Gold Medals at the Olympics and also make him the quickest french runner in history

There have only ever been around 50 people to run a sub 10sec 100m in the history of mankind, and they’re all professional sprinters

I’d be very suprised if any footballer can break even 11 secs, and if any, they’d be VERY few

Henry, for sure is lightning but please, get real people

I’d say Henry is still probably the fastest footballer though, second at worst to Obafemi Martins

Odonkor is a bullet too and i’d say the other faster players are Eto’o, Walcott & King

C.Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Kaka & Messi are probably the quickest with the ball but none are extremely fast runners

As for Shevchenko being ‘fast’? did you see him for Chelski last season?, fast in another lifetime maybe.

  • boomer

u lot are forgetting about dennis rommedahl he was once the fastest footballer. Also ciise says his yunger brother is quiker than him.so he should be super kwik

  • Se

HOSAIN KAEBI, under 10 secs for 100m

  • cesc henry

odonkor was probly the fastest at the world cup henry adn martins are fast 2. definatly messi with the ball though

  • dazman

I would say that theo walcott is the quickest footballer on earth then 2nd probably djibril cisse because he is very quick along with of course thierry henry. Others include obafemi martins, fernando torres and ex liverpool winger mark “speedy” gonzalez. i saw him last year while he was at liverpool and he can easily outpace any right or left back

    1.Theo walcott
    2.Djibril Cisse
    3.thierry henry
    4.fernando torres
    5.mark gonzalez
    6.obafemi martins

  • Kyle

GABRIEL AGBONLAHOR! would absolutely destroy all of your suggestions in a 100m.

  • http://boxer saj

thierry henry is da fastest & liverpool all da way

  • Hawkins

4 does of u hu finks c.ronaldo is da fastest dats bollocks cuz gerrard caught him up wen 20yrds behind 2 slide tackle him in world cup 2006

  • Geoff

I would behard pressed to say anyone is faster than Agbonlahor. Ronaldo is another wiht blinding pace. Running with and without a ball are two totally different things and of course it is easier to catch someone with the ball. Also, if everyone is considering running 11 or barely sub-11 100m times as fast, I’d counter that most athletes who consider themselves sprinters (i.e. participate in track as a sport) would be ashamed at that time. Sub 10.5 would be considered fast regardless of sport.

I do think it would serve better to compare an American stat: the 40 yard dash. This shows someone’s explosiveness in the short term and I believe more footballers would fare better in this than the longer 100m…

  • matty mitch

dennis rommedahl (10.2) or marc overmars (10.3) for all-time
at the moment i wuld have to say aaron lennon (10.5) or obi martins (10.68)
these times or for 100m i found on the net

  • chris

Rommedahl never ran 10.2 seconds. He admitted it himself.

I’d say Theo Walcott is the quickest in the world. I have never seen such pace since Henry in his prime, and probably Walcott is quicker than Martins and Agbonlahor IMO.

In 40 metres though, Walcott runs under 5 seconds. Speaks volumes of his acceleration.

  • michael

CR is tops. Its hard to tell completly because unlike th NFL or other american sports, speed is not always a requirement. I dont know if any soccer player runs a 4.2 40 like Deion Sanders, Joey Galloway, and Darrel Green did, but there are a few who look like they can. CR,Obefemi Martins,SWP, maybe some others. For those of you who think CR is slow you ar dumb and probably run like 14 100m or a 6 or above 40

  • Tom

Walcott was doing 100m in 11.5 wen he was 14! Now its rumoured to be 10.47

and as for ronaldo not being quick…anyone seen him race a bugatti? youtube it…he wins

  • sean

tom your a complete downer… that advert is fake.. and I am a man utd fan… ronaldo is quick… but if you honestly think he could beat a buggati you are incredibly stupid.

p.s. yes i have seen the advert.

  • Habana

I think footballers are less faster than rugbymen, don’t you?

  • Bman

Aaron Lennon of Tottenham is an absolute speed demon as well as Agbonlahore of Aston villa. Ricardo Gardner of Bolton.

  • Lee Boyaram

Who cares if Theo Wallcott was getting 11.5 secs in 100m when he was 14, my GIRLfriend was getting 11.2 secs in 100m when she was 15 – trust me guys i didn’t believe her either but she has PROOF, she showed me her school certificate when she clocked that time in a Borough Championship race.

THE RONALDO (Brazilian one) was unbelieveably fast when he first burst on the scene at 17 years old. When he was at Barcelona he used to pick the ball up at the halfway line and terrorise defences with his pace and score for fun. At his best he was better than Henry!

  • Cesare Borgia

Mate, Is your girlfriend a professional footballer?

I think Walcott and Obafemi Martins must be up there.

Ironically it isn’t that important for a footballer to be quick at the 100 metres necessarily.
In a normal game you will have few sprints that are over 20-25 metres.

If we are talking about covering a very short distance then Samuel Eto’o is extremely quick. Believe it or not so was Pippo Inzaghi (only for 5-10 metres!)

  • Andy

In his prime, Gazza was lightning over 5-10 yards strangely enough!

  • stephen

C.RONALDO is the fastest take it or leave it.

  • marwen

chermiti our tunisian player is fast
he can do 100m in 10 seconds or less

  • gooner

i read somewhere that at the arsenal pre-seasons adebayor was even quicker than walcot over the 100m sprints which probably makes him the quickest in world football at the moment

  • porny

    noob

  • Kinneas

Lee Boyaram, your girlfriend did not run 11.2 at any time in her life. The fastest time recorded for a girl in the UK under 15 is 11.5

School’s can’t time. I’ve run 10.3 in a schools race before. My official PB is 11.2 so I know it’s bollocks.

  • pslfc

djibril cisse would smash anyone footballer on this planet in a 50 or 100m race…never seen anything like it. made ashley cole look like a snail tonight in the France v england game.

  • Tadek

Somoeone wrote that David Odonkor is the fastest. So please watch the Germany Poland match on WC 2006 and look how Ireneusz Jeleń from Auxerre overtook him on 10-15 meters. In Poland we have another very fast player – Marcin Zając. In 2003/2004 season Groclin Grodzisk played on uefa cup with Manchester City. No one from ManC can catch him. So you are writing about famous players but there are many that you even know there are. IMO Walcott is the fastest now.
