Big Question: Who is the Fastest World Cup Player?

By: WC Bob | April 10th, 2006 | 71 Comments »

This past weekend I was over at a friend’s house and we were playing a footie video game. It was a great game except for a couple of things. First, the game control had about 38 buttons and I could never figure out which one is used for long passes. When you have to use the letter “x” to label a button you know the game is too complicated. The second thing was that Luis Figo was an absolute speed demon in the game. I’m not so sure that Figo could beat my 8-year-old nephew in a race these days. But this did get me thinking about some of the players who have video game speed in real life - guys who are fast with a ball and who can blaze by defenders. Here are some of the top speed guys we’ll see this summer.

Gianluca Zambrotta, Italy – Sometimes I think this guy chose the wrong sport. He could win an Olympic sprinting medal.

Thierry Henry, France – His speed is really deceptive. It doesn’t look like he is even running hard but then he leaves the defenders in the dust.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal – I think the video game makers confused Figo with Ronaldo.

DeMarcus Beasley, United States – He is a blur out wide, which is a good thing since he weighs about 98 pounds and would get killed if he didn’t have speed.

Roberto Carlos, Brazil – He’s lost a step, which still places him five steps ahead of most players.

Agree or disagree, who do you think is the fastest player?

I would say that theo walcott is the quickest footballer on earth then 2nd probably djibril cisse because he is very quick along with of course thierry henry. Others include obafemi martins, fernando torres and ex liverpool winger mark “speedy” gonzalez. i saw him last year while he was at liverpool and he can easily outpace any right or left back

1.Theo walcott
2.Djibril Cisse
3.thierry henry
4.fernando torres
5.mark gonzalez
6.obafemi martins

I would behard pressed to say anyone is faster than Agbonlahor. Ronaldo is another wiht blinding pace. Running with and without a ball are two totally different things and of course it is easier to catch someone with the ball. Also, if everyone is considering running 11 or barely sub-11 100m times as fast, I’d counter that most athletes who consider themselves sprinters (i.e. participate in track as a sport) would be ashamed at that time. Sub 10.5 would be considered fast regardless of sport.

I do think it would serve better to compare an American stat: the 40 yard dash. This shows someone’s explosiveness in the short term and I believe more footballers would fare better in this than the longer 100m…

Rommedahl never ran 10.2 seconds. He admitted it himself.

I’d say Theo Walcott is the quickest in the world. I have never seen such pace since Henry in his prime, and probably Walcott is quicker than Martins and Agbonlahor IMO.

In 40 metres though, Walcott runs under 5 seconds. Speaks volumes of his acceleration.

CR is tops. Its hard to tell completly because unlike th NFL or other american sports, speed is not always a requirement. I dont know if any soccer player runs a 4.2 40 like Deion Sanders, Joey Galloway, and Darrel Green did, but there are a few who look like they can. CR,Obefemi Martins,SWP, maybe some others. For those of you who think CR is slow you ar dumb and probably run like 14 100m or a 6 or above 40

Aaron Lennon of Tottenham is an absolute speed demon as well as Agbonlahore of Aston villa. Ricardo Gardner of Bolton.

Who cares if Theo Wallcott was getting 11.5 secs in 100m when he was 14, my GIRLfriend was getting 11.2 secs in 100m when she was 15 - trust me guys i didn’t believe her either but she has PROOF, she showed me her school certificate when she clocked that time in a Borough Championship race.

THE RONALDO (Brazilian one) was unbelieveably fast when he first burst on the scene at 17 years old. When he was at Barcelona he used to pick the ball up at the halfway line and terrorise defences with his pace and score for fun. At his best he was better than Henry!

Mate, Is your girlfriend a professional footballer?

I think Walcott and Obafemi Martins must be up there.

Ironically it isn’t that important for a footballer to be quick at the 100 metres necessarily.
In a normal game you will have few sprints that are over 20-25 metres.

If we are talking about covering a very short distance then Samuel Eto’o is extremely quick. Believe it or not so was Pippo Inzaghi (only for 5-10 metres!)

i read somewhere that at the arsenal pre-seasons adebayor was even quicker than walcot over the 100m sprints which probably makes him the quickest in world football at the moment

Lee Boyaram, your girlfriend did not run 11.2 at any time in her life. The fastest time recorded for a girl in the UK under 15 is 11.5

School’s can’t time. I’ve run 10.3 in a schools race before. My official PB is 11.2 so I know it’s bollocks.

Somoeone wrote that David Odonkor is the fastest. So please watch the Germany Poland match on WC 2006 and look how Ireneusz Jeleń from Auxerre overtook him on 10-15 meters. In Poland we have another very fast player - Marcin Zając. In 2003/2004 season Groclin Grodzisk played on uefa cup with Manchester City. No one from ManC can catch him. So you are writing about famous players but there are many that you even know there are. IMO Walcott is the fastest now.
