Big Question: Who has been the most disappointing World Cup player?

By: WC Bob | July 3rd, 2006 | 119 Comments »

Some players had a lot of hype heading into the World Cup and their performance during the competition has gone a long way to justify it. Others were expected to lead their teams to glory but their play was less than spectacular and their teams are sitting at home right now.

Of all the players in the World Cup, which one disappointed you the most with their play?

“How about the best surprise! Kewell and the Socceroos! I loved it!!!!”

I predicted three years ago that Australia would not only qualify but do well in the World Cup. When I was talking about it with my friend he called me nuts. I also picked France to win it all this cup, so we’ll see. But I am a big Kewell & Viduka fan (though to be fair they didn’t play as large a role in the Australian success as I thought they would).

Ballack a disappointment? You have to be kidding. His job this time is to anchor down the German defense. Klinsi doesn’t want Ballack out there leading the attack but to be in charge of helping his young defense. Ballack gave his all in the Argentina game. He could barely run anymore but he didn’t quit like Beckham. As a matter of fact when it came to the PKs he was there and put his kick away.
The biggest disappointment has to go to the whole Brazilian team. A good case could also be made for the Argentinian behavior after their PK defeat.

Theo Walcott ! So much hype about him.

He was some unknown kid and suddenly Swen brought him to World Cup but did not give chance to make an appearance..at least as a sub. Till now, anyone seen how he looked like & how good is him in football?

In the end, Theo just earned a free, all-expenses paid trip to Germany and chance to watch World Cup.

Ronaldinho was the biggest disappointed in my opinion. He was anonymous in the Champions League final for Barca and just couldn’t get it going in this World Cup also.

this world cup will be remembered for the wrong reasons. the only thing that will be talked about in 4 years time is the refs and the winner. unlike ronaldo who starred last world cup there hasnt been one single stand out player this tornament because the refs have hijacked the cup. and i cant even pinpoint a crap player becuase who has really noticed becuase of the refs. this tornament has been nothing but disapointing with few highlights and too few games games that had any sort of excitement. too big egos from both the refs and players have ruined the cup with not one player being able to match the hype created by the media before the cup.

well, all that being true, it was a great world cup for fans. The oranizing committee went out of its way to make it a fan event, and I think for those that were able to make it, that is far more important. My sense was that the fans had a great time

they did, but it would be nice if the teams they were supporting were given a fair go and the refs remembered that they dont have enyone in the crowd barracking for them.

Ronaldinho, and I thought I’d never say it. I would trade 1,000 Barca championships for that one QF win the other day. Ronaldinho MUST learn that representing Brasil DWARFS the importance of any league game. It is with the Selecao where his legacy will truly be made — or not.

perhaps the media shouldnt say things like ronaldinho’s tornament he will own it. that just puts too much pressure on him. its a team game and sometimes doing the team things is just getting down and dirty and not doing the showman things. he was still good. but there are 21 other world class players on the field that have a say in proceedings.

Rooney da Looney without a doubt, but then I missed the Brazil match.

Leave Beckham alone. He was not well, he battled bravely and he scored a great goal. Sadly, he’s resigned as England captain.

Man, toughie here! I can’t choose one, so herewith a few thoughts. First, I have a comment on Donovan.

I’ve travelled abroad a lot, and he honestly reminded me of someone who has picked up a parasite and doesn’t know it. I am not making a joke here. You keep going and don’t even realize what’s going on for months because it is such a slow process. Then, you finally get down enough and have some weird tests and they give you ridiculous numbers of drugs and you go “Oh, man, I was kinda sick!” Really, not kidding here.

The big disappointments for me were general: Lack of teamwork with some, lack of good refs in many instances, and general thuggery like headbutting, stomping, vicious elbows, and the like. Diving goes without saying!

Easily rooney i mean what a fu**ing idiot who agrees? He lived up to no hype and proved himself to be the dumbest a**hole in soccer…also Landon Donavon hyped up to nothing…

Hype, hype, glitz, glitz going down, down, down. The year of the underdogs! Who can captain national stars all blinded by the spotlight? Not Ronaldinho. Not Beckham. Not Reyna, either(US underdogs were acting like bully of the block). Wouldn’t be surprised to see Ronaldinho quit as captain. . .
FIFA is the 800 pound gorilla in this room. The fan fun committee = money. The FIFA media hype = money. The refereeing and other decisions = control, and that has sucked the blood out of the games. FIFA has had a drastic effect on this Cup. They are the worst player on this stage.
Red card – gdawg. This ain’t no bar.

gdawg klinsmann is german but they give him a hard time for living in southern california and marrying an american chick. hey if they don’t want him though maybe the us team can get him god knows we need a decent coach.

ronaldinho disappointed me the most because i know what he can do and that he didn’t do it.

the us team was awful but to be honest i didn’t expect much…….how sad is that. some time in my life time i would like to see the us make it to the semis. i’m 40 so they don’t have much time LOL

lampard, gerrard, crouch(even if he plays well, just looks so awkward)ronaldinho, and many more, sven is a cool calm character but whats with bruce arena? he looked totally bored and seemed like he was too important to have to watch his team lose!!…. on the upside, owen hargreaves! fantastic! england could use a few more like him, and special mention to zidane, seems to play better now than 10+ years ago,

Definatley the entire Brazilian team. In fact, i shouldn’t even use the words BRAZIL and TEAM in the same sentence because the level of teamwork and unity as a team (which soccer is all about) obviously wasn’t there, and neither was the passion. Nike made the ‘play a beautiful game’ slogan about the Brazilian team prior to the world cup, but they disgraced that title by playing far from beautiful football. All i saw was a group of very overrated INDIVIDUALS playing for themselves. Even Ronaldinho, who gets people excited whenever he touches the ball wasn’t able to produce anything special at all, we even saw the famous Ronnie smile wiped off his face in frustration with his teammates. Sure, Brazil won their group in ordinary fashion, but when it finally came to facing good quality opposion they crumbled and fell.

Ronaldinho is the world’s best and we all know it.Had the coach allow him to play as free as he’d have liked to, Brazil would have done better, even when the other players were lacking in team effort; they were just too complacent, but you must understand that Ronaldinho is not the whole team- he is only one player.
And….I was gutten to see that one particular player was adjusting his bloody socks when that goal was scored by France!
We still luv you, Ronaldinho!!!!!
