Big Question: Which team other than your own have you enjoyed watching?

It happens to me every World Cup. You watch games involving teams that you don’t really care about, but eventually a team wins you over. Maybe it is their style of play or maybe it is one of their players, but you end up cheering on a team that isn’t your own. Has this happened to you yet in the 2006 World Cup?

Have you become a fan of any teams other than your own? Which team(s)?

  • Raybron

First, my sides: France and the US. Thank goodness for the US performance today or I would really be fishing for other sides to follow.

As to the answer, I’ll be the first of several to say it, I’m sure- Argentina. I’ve been a big Messi fan for a year now, but their entire team is just incredible. Their defense may not be among the world’s best, but from a “fun to watch” perspective, this isn’t much of a big deal, because their midfield and forwards are astounding: Riquelme, Crespo, Tevez, Messi, etc. etc. etc. I am in complete awe of their side, even more so than Brazil.

I cheered for TNT and Angola ;)
    Also Saudi Arabia

My team is Iran and we lost :(

I was born in Peru but my mom is brazilian, so I grew up and lived in both countries. Even though they hold a special place in my heart – I guess the rooting for the underdog thing – Peru has been sucking for the past 25 years, so my choice on the last 5 world cups has been easy.
Anyways, my Peruvian side refrains me from rooting for Ecuador – the whole local rivalry thing – but I must admit I have been quite delighted by their performance. On the other hand, my brazilian half tells me that I cannot possibly root for Argentina, but when they play like they did the other day, I swear I feel like going out and getting myself an albiceleste shirt. :)

diego–glad to hear you are (at least sorta) rooting for Ecuador!

For me, I am sort of surprised by how much I’m rooting for Trinidad & Tobago. I guess I’m justa sucker for underdogs.

Ahm, I loved both of the Ivory Coast’s games. They played good attacking football and it’s very unlucky that they are in a group with Argentina and Holland. They’d get passed England, Italy and the US witout an effort. And I’d gladly give one of these team’s spot in the round of 16 to the Ivory Coast – in a split second.

Otherwise, my tournament favorite Argentina was good to watch and Torres’ goal (or more the whole move of the Spanish team towards it) is worth a mentioning.

whether one likes the Dutch or not, they do play great football. Argentina is on top of it’s game. Germany is, well, typically, strong German at the end of a game; Brazil looks lax; England looks fatigued; Italy looks typically Italian (but not as good defensively), and well, this thing looks somewhat wide open. Terrific!

  • Sumit

Argentina totally won me over. Simply superb play. Ivory Coast won me over too. Too bad some of the close referee decisions went against them, they could have easily beaten the Dutch.

  • Andrew

I dig the way the Netherlands plays the game. I don’t know if it’s because I lived there for 4 years while I was in high school (US Army brat), or if it’s just their ball control, surgical style of play. Whatever it is, I like it.

The USAis my side…what a performance today! Trinidad and Tobago looked great in their first match. Brazil (obviously) plays fast and loose. Argentina came alive earlier in the week. They were expected to do well but wow! Lastly England. They’re loaded but they’re underacheiving. As Rooney is now match fit, I’m hopeful they’ll look more like the contender they’re supposed to be.

other than my team I enjoy, Brazil, England & Australia.

  • Orfeo

I’m from Argentina, so I may not be too fair with the rest of the teams. But I’ll have to agree with everything Raybron said (except for the defense thing, I think they are as solid as the midfield and forward lines). I can’t tell you how great it is to be winning the match with a 3-0 score before the half-time, and then look at the bench and see Messi, Tevez, Aimar, Palacio, etc. waiting to get in. There’s also a mention to Croacia (they put up quite a fight against Brazil), and Spain.

  • dila

    yup! definitely argentina and spain.
so far, their games have been an absolute fun to watch.i’d like to see england played that way though.

  • bfos

Ivory Coast has been my favorite, but to address another comment, there’s no way they *easilly* get past England, Italy, or the US. While they are a very dangerous and fast attacking team, they don’t have the consistency to be better than those three teams.

  • Roland

I’m for Spain, all the way, but I really enjoyed watching Argentina, and Germany has given us some fun matches.

  • dirk

Germany and Australia. Hop Deutschland Hop; Oh, and that that translates to Waltz Matilda.

  • dirk

    Love the Socceroos!!!!

  • Hobart

    GHANA GHANA GHANA

    GHANA WOOP SOME ASS

  • Juan

    My Team: Argentina (VAMOS CARAJO)

Teams I love to watch: Argentina

  • Florchis

I’m also an underdog fun! I believe in miracles!
Trinidad & Tobago, Croatia against Brazil, Polland against Germany… unluckly they all lost at the end…
Anyway, I’m from Argentina, so it is very convinient I cannot choose my own team for this post!
I like watching Ecuador, they are playing incredibly. I think they are going to give Germany a really really hard time next match. Can’t wait to see it!

PS. Did you know that Ecuador beated Argentina during the world cup qualifyings? yes, that’s another reason why I cheer this team… only the greatest can beat us..

  • dirk

Ghana is the new respresentative of football. They were techically masterful today!!!

  • http://radix-lecti.blogspot.com Prashanth

lets just say that India is not going to be at the world cup for a long long time. Anyway, I have been rooting for England for the past three world cups. Took to the pace and the action of the English game long time back.

But I have to admit I have thoroughly enjoyed watching the African teams. Its been absolutely magical..their pace, enthusiasm and so on. Pity IVory Coast had to go out in such a tough group.

APart from that only the Abiceleste.

  • beam

The team i enjoyed watching most was Trinidad and Tobago. Their defensive style was enjoyable, but lack of offense was their weak point. my team is Argentina, and after a pass dismal showing in the pass few World cups I hope they really excel this year.

  • dirk

Hve to agree with Prash. And Ghana? My, now there was a team that really played. It was terrific

  • Ali

USA! USA! USA! USA! It is a good thing the performed today, I almost had a heart attack. Portugal has caught my eye though. If the US can’t get through it would be nice to see Portugal do well. Still, I can only root for my boys. I hope they can get over their problems and play beautiful! GO USA!

  • Jack

    US is my team.
This World Cup, I have been very entertained by Germany and Argentina. Whatever it is, maybe being the home team and the pressure that goes with it, Germany will be the team I root for when the US bows out.

  • Beki

I’m completely going for Germany. Deutschland all the way!

  • xxzh

I love Brazil. I have a little worry about their defense.

I’m from Chinese. I feel pity about our national football team. I hope that one day I can go for my own national team in world cup!

  • Ricky

I was impressed and really liked Ivory Coast.
Argentina had a tough game with them.
I was amazed by their technical ability, strenght and speed.
I think they are one of the strongest team in the world cup, although the got eliminated so soon.
I think any high profile country would have difficulty with this team.
Ivory Coast should have won against the dutch. they domincated the second half, and the referee didnt count a couple penalties, which would have made them win.

That is the team that won me over so far.
Aside from that, I am from Argentina, and well… as everyone knows, they rock. I always rooted for them but I had some doubt, but after watching the ghana friendly game I was convinced about the team.
Argentina has perfect players, perfect team work, perfect technical abilities, and a perfect bench. Also they have the experience.

In conclusion, Argentina has been the best so far in the world cup, but Ivory Coast has really gained my respect. Props to the africans.

On another note: I had high expectations for England, but dissapointed me big time.
Italy also didnt play at their best during the USa match.
Brasil didnt deliver their high class football, but I am expecting to see more during tomorrows game with Australia

    VAMOS ARGENTINA CARAJO!!!

    ricky

  • Ricky

    Oh by the way
The one thing I dislike about the Ivory Coast team is they are not aware of team work.
They like individualism, and that hurts them.
If they team-played more, they would be a killer team

I enjoy Watching Brazil play! even though my country did not make it to the world cup, im going for Brazil to win another Championship and Add another STAR to their Uniform/Emblem!!!

  • Luis

I live and die with Portugal (a huge under dog even though everyone is always calling us favorites), but this Cup has bee fantastic so far. I love all these upsets. Nothing is certain. Bravo Africa! Angola, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo..all of them. There will be an African champion in my lifetime.

I love all these new comers kickin’ ass: Australia great comeback. Brazil will be tough but take no sh*t!

  • Claude

Being German my favorite team is Germany. My second favorite team is whoever is playing Brazil. I love European soccer and really don’t care for the Brazil style of play. Bah Humbug to the beautiful game. It is boooooooooooooooring. Go Germany and I hope my countrymen and women take good care of Bob and his blogging buddies.

  • carrie

Argentina, Argentina, and Argentina. How can you watch them play and not root for them. Love them love them love them
    Vamos Argentinaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • http://footy.hm/ Josh

I really enjoyed watching Ghana and their 2-0 win against the Czech Republic.

  • mace

south korea, the match against Togo.

  • Jodido

USA is my side – great spirit shown from our boys against the mighty Italians. We made them look like asses. Complete 180 from the CR game. My other team is Mexico, but they’ve looked as overrated as the US – if they were in our group, they’da been whipped by either CR or Italy. Regardless, ¡Arriba El Tri!

I’ve really enjoyed watching Ecuador. I don’t think I’ve seen a team play more solid defense than them, and their goals have been quite nice. I hope they play England to knock them out, and advance to the semis for playing such sound fundamental soccer. The plucky Trinis have made me wish for a little Soca spirit as well, I only know one Trini and I had a burst of pride for him after watching his men hold off two of the greatest footballing powers for 170 minutes. Finally, I enjoyed watching Oz play Japan and hope the Aussies have a surprise in store for Brazil!

  • Dave Hamilton

T&T, Ghana, and Croatia in particular, although the latter scared this Brasilian fan. The USA is the only other team I feel really committed to, although I want to see Germany go far because a high level of excitement remains here in Germany when that happens.

  • http://www eugene strakhman

i am from Ukrain and very disaponted.
but Argentina… this is poetry of the socker!!

  • John

I am from the US, but since we are out of it, my hopes and dreams go to Germany. Auf nach Berlin!

However, I knew that going in. So many of the big name teams (England, Brazil, Italy) have played sub-par soccer so far, and it’s sad to have to watch teams with such fire and excitement lose to these teams in such a trudgingly boring way. This is why I will also root for Ghana. Because my other favorite team is Brazil’s opponent.

My dream would be: Germany, Mexico, Ecuador, Netherlands, Australia, Ukraine, Ghana, Spain

    Germany, Netherlands, Ukraine, Ghana

    Germany, Ghana

Germany (but of course, this is only dreaming)

  • Rain

Ghana and Ivory Coast (but have not seen all countries playing)
