Big Question: Which Semifinal Match Excites you the Most?

Sixty games down and only four more to go before we bring a close to the 2006 World Cup. The semifinal matchups are set with Germany and Italy slugging it out on July 4 in Dortmund, and Portugal and France on June 5 in Munich.

You know the teams. You know the matchups. Which of the two semifinal games excites you the most?

  • Louise

I’ll go with Italy-Germany. Both teams are playing very well, so hopefully it will be a good match.

Although France looks fantastic, Portugal was far from impressive against England. France should have the easiest time making it through.

  • Natalie

Portugal v. France, I can’t wait for Wednesday!!!!!

  • Angie M

    Germany : Italy

  • mightie

    fra vs por
    1)its fun to watch zidane
    2)portugal & france had tough
    knock out matches so fa.

  • Rain

Portugal VS France will be an epic game.

  • Stephanie

i think Portugal and France will be a definite good game and so will the Italy and Germany game…I think all you people who have negative things to say about the portuguese should rethink your thoughts because if they werent good…they wouldnt be in the semi finals…Portugal has the potential to go all the way…and they will if they keep playing how they have been.

  • http://beingruthiesmom.blogspot.com/ Trish

Definitely Italy-Germany. Which one are you blogging Bob? Both? :-)

  • Henrik

GER-ITA of course. The host will win the cup! ;)

  • Carlos

Dificult to say. France-Portugal If i go with aesthetics. Italy-germany if I go with intensity.

  • Jackie

The France v. Portugal game will be epic! They’re amazing teams and it will be an exciting match. Why would Italy v. Germany be interesting though? The Germans have been so dominate and the Italians so weak. I expect a blow out. Say 4-1?

  • matthew

germany italy will be a agressive affair.

france portgual will be a more attacking game

  • Kevin K

I will be watching Fra-Por as a spectacle.

I will be watching Ger-Ita with German glasses on and hoping they utterly humiliate the Italians.

So, it depends on how you define ‘excite’, I suppose. I think the former game will be the greater exhibition of football, and I have a personal stake in the latter match.

  • pao

ahahaha kevin you must be new to football to expect germany dominating italy. Maybe Germany is going to win but nobody dominates Italy in the world cup.

  • pao

oops it was humiliating…well it’s the same.

  • Kevin K

I didn’t say expect, I said hope. I expect the game to be tight and end in another penalty shoot-out. As for being new to the game, I wasn’t born in Australia, and football is the main sport where I came from (Burma) so I’ve grown up with it. Thanks for the patronising though.

  • Claude

Neither Italy or Portugal has been exciting to watch. We could be in store for two boring games. I suspect that France – Portugal will be the more exciting game. Italy will probably stay in it’s usual defensive shell and make the Germans crack them open like a Brazil nut. I’d like to remind everybody that Italy beat Germany 4-1 in March in Italy.

  • Alex

Well, since this will look more like a UEFA semifinal, I cannot say that any game excites me. If I have to choose a team that would be Germany, they have shown better football throughout the WC.

  • John

If the French team we saw today shows up and plays like that, no offense to Portugal, but that game will be over early.

I gotta go with the Germany-Italy match. Both teams have hit their strides. They match up well. Both play good defense, have great keepers, and can explode on offense if they see an opening. I give a slight edge to Germany, but only because they’re home. Should be one helluva great game!

  • dan

Idid’t wanna watch an all European semi- final or final for that matter but, that now, is what we face.
I think France/Germany final to me will be excting to watch,I’m not French fun but I respect zizzou and would love to see him retirein style, but the CUP to the Germans.

  • Kelvin

    Definitely Portugal vs. France.

  • OilerFan

France vs. Portugal for me. Both teams play attacking football so should be a more exciting match.

The germany/italy match will prob just be a snooze-fest with all that defending and go to penalties anyway.

  • Ryan

Can’t wait for Italy and Germany. It’s sort of a grudge match between my best friend and I. Something we’ve been waiting to see for a long time. Go Italia!!!

  • Leah from Hawaii

    France v. Portugal.
I expect to be hoarse by the end of the game. And wake up a few neighbors while we’re at it. (The WC airs in the early AM here in Hawaii.)
Got nothing but love for Zizou!!!

  • Jason

Portugal vs France because it will be a much closer match because Germany have been in great form, and Italy have not been playing exceptionally well.

  • squiggle

France-Portugal. Will the adventure continue to the final?

  • chris

I expect France v Portugal to be the more entertaining game. Both teams have defended well but have a more open style.

Italy v Germany I expect to be extremely tight and a single goal to decide it. Either that or penalties.

I don’t care who wins as long as Italy loses :)

  • Sauron

France – Portugal.!. anyway, I want someone to kick Germany’s butt (sorry but you guys left Argentina out)

  • nick

Germany v Italy in terms of the overall value of the game. However football fans all over the world should treasure every game zidane plays so this makes the france game equally exciting.

  • soulreaver

My favourite team was argentina but unfortunately now we have to watch only european teams in action.i think that france-portugal will be the best match because italy defends too much and germany doesn’t have players like zidane, henry or cristiano ronaldo who can light up a game.i hope the portuguese will win

  • http://yahoo bhupinder singh

    enjoy the worldcup fever.good
luck for germany.i know germany will win the wc.

    Portugal and France.

Every single Portugal game have been amazing so far. I mean everyone just keeps on accusing us of DIVING and being CHEATERS and winking at people or HEAD BUTTINg. really who wouldn’t want to watch any of our GAMES?

France is a shocker also. will all the old people. it’s like they’re taking something liek an equalizer to Viagra but it picks up their feet. ya kno?? very very speedy. Or maybe its just Zidane. nice name btw. love it.

both games should be “exciting” to watch. i’d love to see how zizou plays this one.

  • Catalina

so tomorrow it’s going to be France vs. Portugal, I support Portugal, but I honestly don’t think they make it, but if they do, then yay! France is good so it’s going to be kind of hard, Portugal has played against easy teams. Hopeully they’ll try their best and it’s going to be an interesting match, not as interesting as today’s game (Italy vs. Germany) though.

  • http://canada louie

germany=italy for those who say that portugal- france will be more exciting shoul think again portugal has been kucky every game and france has not done anything until there last game as for italy as any one knows they get better late in tournaments i see france playing italy with italy winning 2-0

    POR vs FRA… ;-)

However… FRA will be super contained (as we’ve seen in all matches) and waiting for an openning through the middle, that’ll allow Zidane and Henry to make some damage. We’ve all seen how good POR can defend.

POR will be mad, but progressing slowly and patiently along the wings, trying to explore those areas, where we are strong and where FRA is weak.

Deco is a major plus, as the guy will find a way to pass the ball, slashing FRA’s defense somewhere (I hope)… Costinha will be on Zidane, like a fly on sh#t… :)

Question: Does anybody thinks, or hopes, to see Nuno Gomes against FRA? He plays behind the offside trap (unliiker Pauleta) but because of that, can play ball and help pierce the defense. On the other hand, Pauleta knows those guys better than his own hands…

So… As any other WC match, it’ll be about winning and not putting on a show.

GER vs ITA, well… The best defense overall, against the strongest unbrakable compressing cilinder ever… ;-)

    FORCA PORTUGAL!!!

  • http://www.worldcupblog.org/world-cup-2006/big-question-which-current-coach-was-the-best-player.html#comments Pedro P

Weeks before, a vast majority wanted to see an underdog going far. POR’s success has been totally merited, and everybody knows that. No matter behind what some choose to hide, this is a fact everybody realizes.

This also means that, as expected, “sacred cows” don’t like to loose to underdogs, that showed to be better.

Don’t kill the underdogs at birth! Cos everybody knows POR deserves to be where they are. They were far more honest than the French (Henry’s dive giving them victory), and Italy (getting there with a false penalty). Germany plays home. POR got there beating 2 of the WC contenders (HOL not really interested in playing ball and ENG a formidable adversary, no matter what the tabloids say), in 2 extremelly demanding games.

People just keep on battering us, seeking refuge in some of the most riduculous and false arguments.

Good luck to all of them… We simply want to win and work for that. We are not the most brilliant team. But we have the biggest soul.

    FORCA PORTUGAL!!!

    GERMANY-ITALY
these 2 teams are head over heels better teams than either portugal or france. Portugal was lucky to even be there (ie) their games against the dutch, mexico& england. it goes to show you that the best team does not allways win.
In my oppinion the wc game is today with italy winning 1-0
the third place match is tommorow with the over rated bunch playing the over the hill gang best of luck to all

  • http://www.worldcupblog.org/world-cup-2006/big-question-which-current-coach-was-the-best-player.html#comments Pedro P

Portugal WAS the better team against ENG, against HOL by far, and MEX never really had a chance, as they were 2-0 down, when they started playing good, against POR’s B side. A MEX team, ARG had dificulties sending home.

Get a grip, man… Cos we’re going for it, no matter what the world thinks, with all the humbleness we’ve showed, and the others have NOT shown!

If we don’t get there, there’s some more in 2 and in 4 years… I guess with that speach, for you too “lg”…

FORCA PORTUGAL!!! A VITORIA FINAL!!! ;-)

  • Gustave

Portugal will be the 2006 Fifa Worldcup champion. They have played very well. If it wasnt for Bhoularouz fault to Cristiano Ronaldo he would have scored against England. Figo is the man of the passes. Deco will be just behind Cristiano. Vamos Portugal !!!!

  • http://canada lg

with all do respect mr portugal what you just said is typical of what a person cheering portugal would say. as for the holland game portugal looked lousy for all but the first ten minutes and for the english game england clearly outplayed portugal even being down one man or did that slip your mind as for mexico ok i will give you that as for c. rinaldo give me a break he is nothing but baby as for my speach i do not need to impress anybody unlike you and please do not give portugal the credit you think they deserve as they are not as good as the portuguese think they are and i hope they play the Italians so you will truly see what being schooled in soccer is

    viva gli azzurri
    and
    va pescar purtugal

oh by the way 2years or 4 years from now you will be schooled again if you even qualify.

  • http://canada eusebio

pedro and gustave i to love portugal, but they were not the better team against holland or england, but a win is a win and we will take it.
I hope we will win but i donot see it against any of the remaining teams, but there is allways hope, but a slim one

    forca portugal

  • Catalina

If France plays Italy it’s going to be an interesting match, like today’s game (GER vs. ITA). i hope Italy wins, Italy has gotten better, but France is also good. I have faith in Italy , I know they’re capable of winning the cup.

    GO ITALY
    potete farlo!!!
