Big Question: Which Second Round Match do You Want to See?

Yes, I know. The first round matches have not even been played yet. But you have to admit that you have peaked ahead to see the potential matches in the round of 16. The possible match-ups are very intriguing. We could see England-Germany, Brazil-Italy, Argentina-Portugal, France-Spain and on and on.

When you look at the tournament pairings, which potential second round match is the one you would want to see become a reality.

I agree, the Czech Republic is a good candidate for the cup. I don’t think any of the previous nations that have won the cup will win it this time round. Czech Republic need to believe in themselves and the cup is theirs.

italy(1st in their group) vs Australia (2nd in their group). This game would have a massive impact on the state of football in Australia. The result is inconsequential but for the Socceroos to get to this stage of the competition and to play italy, whom many Australians (like myself) owe their heritage to, it would be unbelievable. C’mon Aussies!

However, if this is not the case, then i would love Italy to come 2nd in their group in order to have a second round clash with Brazil (unbackable favourites to top their group). This would undoubtedly be one of the matches, if not THE, match of the tournament especially considering Italy have a real chance to prevent Brazil progressing further.

Croatia vs Italy would be a dream. Italy wants to even the score from the last time we met and Croatia wants to prove that theres a new golden generation coming through.
Two proud nations going for it, who wouldnt want to see this.

England v Germany – England will beat them 2-0
France v Spain – i think its an average match
Argentina v Portugal – as an argentine fan i want them to win

i want to see…
Brazil v Italy – its difficult to guess who can win, so this will make it thrilling.

Second Round is looking a bit like this:

-Germany vs Sweden

-Argentina vs Mexico

-Italy vs Australia

-France vs Ukraine

-Brazil vs Czech. Rep

-Spain vs Switzerland

-England vs Ecuador

-Portugal vs Holland

No doubt, Portugal/Holland will be a classic, pretty much like their Euro ‘04 match. Brazil Czech Rep will be another exciting match and I think Argentina and Mexico will be very interesting, especially for the European crowd that doesn’t get to see a lot of these Copa America style matches.

Alex hit the nail on the head. Germany v England will certainly have the biggest hype around it.

Another match-up that I’m looking forward to is Portugal v Argentina/Netherlands.

Nick, i hear you. Would love to see our boys play Italy and who knows (just like Sth Korea) at this stage of the Cup, anything can happen.

Just making the World Cup has been huge for football back home, so imagine what a second round showing would do.

From Nick’s post above: Brazil (unbackable favourites to top their group).

I agree. Brazil is loaded with talent, and I will watch their matches just to see the skill. However, I just can’t bring myself to have any kind of support for them.

It’s not just that everybody wants to see the underdogs do well against them. There’s that; but there’s also those incessant ads featuring the Brazilian player, where we’re reminded time after time how good they are.

Now, I know that they’re good; but it gets more than a little grating to see them constantly.

I’d love to see Croatia/Australia come out of the group.

Portugal vs Argentina should be a killer… Germany vs England is always a classic. Mexico vs Argentina or Holland is one I’d like to see. CZE vs CRO or BRA should also be great…

I only hope POR gets there.

Since I love thrills and surprises, I’d like to see:

Germany beating England by penalty shoot-outs. Lehmann saves Rooney’s kick.

Iran beating Holland through penalties. Holland is the team that got knocked out in WC 98, and Euro 92,96,00 by penalty shoot-outs. Can they survive a penalty shoot-out in this year’s world cup?

Tunisia vs South Korea. It’s exciting to have at least one underdog in the quarter final.

USA beating Brazil via penalties. Kaka, Ronaldinho and Ronaldo have so much pressure that they all miss their spot kicks.

Holland will avenge for their 04 loss. But the one I look forward to MOST is certainly Italy vs. Brazil – these two are pretty much equal, so it’ll be quite interesting.

England and Germany don’t work well, b/c I KNOW for a fact that England is MUCH better.

The most interesting game that COULD happen in 2nd round is Brazil vs. Italy, but I don’t think that will happen because Italy and Brazil will win their groups.

The game I wan’t to see most is Argentina vs. Portugal.

I’m praying to god that Portugal vs. Argentina does not happen!! These two are my favourite teams to win the World Cup, and I would hate to see any of them go out so early. I’d rather Argentina face Mexico and Portugal face Holland (they have a better chance of defeating Holland as compared to defeating Argentina).

But the second round match which I’d like to see is:

Czech Republic vs. Brazil

Portugal are a very weak team. All the talent on the field….no cojones…very weak mentally. The argies will easily dispatch of them.

I want a team who has never won it to win the cup. Anybody but the arrogant, diving, dirty argies.
