Big Question: Which Group is the Most Interesting to You?

By: WC Bob | May 24th, 2006 | 31 Comments »

We’ve had plenty of time to debate which groups are the hardest and which groups are the easiest. Today is your chance to pick which group is the most interesting to you. Perhaps you are curious how the Group of Death will play out. Maybe you are most interested in a group because of a specific team. You might even be a neutral fan who just wants to see great football and you have your eye on a specific group.

Go ahead and offer up the group or groups that you plan on following the most closely when the World Cup kicks off in a couple of weeks. You never know. We might even offer up some special coverage on World Cup Blog if your group is especially popular.

I fear group C will not be what expected, becuase it’ll be too disputed. This doesn’t necessarily mean all the matches are going to be great… There’ll be a lot of fouls in several of these games, I’m sure, and some will be too “tactical”.

Then… BRA’s group should be very interesting, specially cos CRO usually play well. Also the CZE’s group. I also expect a very good match in group D POR vs MEX.

With the likes of Drogba and Eboue in the ivorian side, their experience with most of his friends in all the teams they are playing, definately puts them on a confident profile. We expect ivory and Argentina to emerge winners in this pool.I bet Ivory might manage to get to Finals

It will not be a shock when the whites try to fix the group c outcome to eliminate Ivory cost because it is a threat to many of the western teams.Every game on their side needs to be carefully monitored.

Group C and Group E are most competitive, no doubt.

By the way, Brazil would clearly win a Babes World Cup…

Bob,

I’m going to assume you want us to name the group without the team we usually support that is the most interesting.

As a (still, even after last night) fan of the US, my first choice would be Group E.

Outside of Group E, the next group that I’m earmarking to watch is Group C. The opportunities for great football are endless in this group. I have to say, however, that Pedro P might be right - too tactical the first couple of matches, not enough fireworks.

But I’ll also be paying close attention to Groups A, B, D, F, G, and H, just to name a few.

The Tunisia vs Saudi Arabia match…what a greatly anticipated showcase of global footballing skills that will be..go Group H! :D

Seriously though…Croatia could upstage Brazil and spice things up a bit in that Group..

But I will still go with Group C and E as the fieriest and most competitive

OJ, we only know Brazil’s 10 are very good. ;-) Now we need to see the other 310, from the other 31 teams… ;-)

C Nick, IMO, Group C will either be what we discussed above, or…:

a thrilling ARG vs IVC (ARG wins)+ not so thrilling HOL vs SM (SM wins or draws), crutial and defining ARG vs SM (SM wins cos ARG will underestimate them) + super interesting HOL vs IVC (HOL should win but will be happy to draw), surprising IVC vs SM (IVC will win) and a dramatic + nasty ARG vs HOL (HOL wins). Couldn’t help myself in making all these forecasts… :-)

On the other side(s), Spain vs Tunisia should be fun, as well as ENG vs PAR. FRA might show KOR a surprise (for the koreans, not for the rest of the world) and SWI might show both of them the same… Again, BRA vs CRO should be a classic and I only hope CZE can impose their (much nicer) play against ITA.

The obvious answer that many rightfully mention: Group C with Argentina, Holland, Ivory Coast and Serbia & Montenegro.

I’m going to cross my fingers that the US gets their act together and say Group E. If they do, it could be a very entertaining group. Maybe diminished expectations will work in their favor as it did 4 years ago. Last night was bad, bad, bad, but it’s still too early to write off the US off completely.

Group B for England and H for Spain. Group C to see which teams make it out alive. And Group E to see the USA get beat.

Here are the two “Most Interesting” Groups, with my reasoning:

First, I’m going with Group D.

One team from N.America,
One team from Asia,
One team from Africa,
One team from Europe.

Four different styles, and I believe all the teams will look to push the attack. Three of the teams seem pretty even, and you have the further interest factor of Portugal facing the former Portuguese colony of Angola.
______

Group F looks to be interesting for similar reasons: 1.) Four different qualifying zones are represented, so we can see the different styles oppose each other. 2.) There is an interesting ancestry angle between Croatia and Australia, and, 3.) The Brazilians play a very entertaining syle of soccer — especially in the group stages.

While I’m concerned about how the USA will perform in Group E, I think Group D could prove much more intriguing.

You’ve got the Angola-Portugal dynamic, the Iran v. the world dynamic, and the “will Portugal choke again?” dynamic.

I agree that group D will be interesting. I think that a team not expected to get to the second round will do just that.

There’s no debate that people are most excited to see group C and E.

They’re the most competitive groups.

It may turn out that a joke group like Spain, Ukraine, Tunisa and Saudi Arabia turns out the biggest upsets, but going in, Group C and E are the best!

I also hope Portugal doesn’t choke this time, although it only happened in WC02… In 94 we were outqualified by Italy (who wnet runners-up) and Switzerland, who also did a fine tournament. In 98 it was Germany in our qualifying group…

I also feel both Angola and Iran are stronger than commonly assumed and, again, I expect MEX vs POR to be a killer! :-)

Would much rather see the “Potugal vs former colony dynamic” (if there is such a thing) against Brazil in the final, though… ;-)

It certainly is close between C and E. There does seem to be a bit more parity in E though and with the 2nd place finisher most likely to be facing Brazil in the Round of 16, finishing 1st is huge and clearly any of the teams in E can do it. I vote E.

i think that group B is going to have some great matches. ENG-PAR-SWE. Those three should put up some good games, and it will give us a lot to talk about. TRI could always spice up the group as well! This is a great group and SWE-ENG will hopefully take a rematch on last world cup 1-1 draw.

I am a big fan of Argentina and Holland so that group should be fun but I do feel that people are overestimating what Serbia and Ivory Coast will do. I think that this group will be dominated by Argentina with Holland second. Everyone is all excited about Ivory Coast but Argentina is lucky that it is them and not Cameron or Nigeria. Serbia has a great defense but we know that Holland and Argentina will score on them. The toughest group is group E with three teams that should be in the second round. I also think that Australia could surprise Brasil and make that group interesting.

Group of death, would have to be E. runner up or winner of that group would have to wait and see the placing of Brazil. Unless by some miracle they dont make it, then its group C.
