Big Question: Which Games Can’t I Miss?

By: WC Bob | March 16th, 2006 | 7 Comments »

Crazy FanIf this World Cup holds true to form, some of the group play contests could be the best games in the entire tournament. But who has the time to watch every single match? I do, but I suspect that you have a bit more of a life than I do. Because not all of the 96 group play matches will be a thriller here are the top five that you will want to record so that you can watch them years from now with your grandkids.

5. Brazil – Croatia, June 13, Berlin
The opening match for both teams could be a wide open contest and might give us an early indication of the strength of Brazil. Croatia is one of the tournament darkhorses du jour following their friendly triumph over Argentia and if they are able to knock off the defending champs they might just be able to ride the momentum far into the tournament.

4. Czech Republic – Italy, June 22, Hamburg
The final group play match could be the most important for both teams. Not only could the winner finish first in the group, but they could also avoid a second round match against Brazil. This one will surely be a feast for your eyes, especially if you like long haired men who can really play football.

3. England – Sweden, June 20, Cologne
Another group closing match featuring two European teams, this one should be a tight, hard fought game. Sweden has historically given England fits and with the pressure on the line you could see both the best and worst of some of the game’s most famous players. Plus its fun watching England lose.

2. Argentina – Netherlands, June 21, Frankfurt
The second the draw took place everyone had this one circled on their calendars. I don’t need to add to the hyperbole other than to say you’d be a fool not to watch this game.

1. Tunisia – Saudi Arabia, June 19, Leipzig
This game has gotten such a bum rap that undoubtedly it will turn out to be the most entertaining match that everyone chooses not to watch. If you are going to be in Germany this could be your favorite game because there might actually be reasonably priced tickets available. Do yourself a favor and force yourself to watch this one. If it sucks, I will personally come to your house and help you regain the two hours of life you spent watching it.

Concerning your #2, #3, and #4 selections — it’s possible (and some might even say probable) that each of these teams might already have 6 points (and a ticket to the knock-out stage) by the time these games are played. For the love of the beautiful game, let’s hope not.

As a fan of Team USA, I surely hope CZE & ITA don’t each have 6 points by the time they meet…

[...] Yesterday I offered the top five first round World Cup matches that under no circumstance should you miss. Today I present four games that you have no reason to watch unless you are a glutton for punishment or you hail from one of the countries involved. When these games are on, you are better off watching your fingernails grow, while learning Esperanto. [...]

There are only 3 must see games:

1. Serbia and Montenegro vs. the Netherlands (the little tulips).

2. Serbia and Montenegro vs. Cote d’Ivoire (lost to Egypt… hahaha).

3. Serbia and Montenegro vs. Argentina (patagonia patsies).

I agree on changing Tunisia vs Saudia Arabia with POR vs MEX… ;-) And if Portugal goes through group stage, they will meet one of group C. That’s got to be worthwhile…

Your right Tunisia vs Saudia Arabia will be a great match. For all the haters, remember this when they play.
