Big Question: Where are you going to watch the World Cup?

By: WC Bob | April 16th, 2006 | 9 Comments »

One of my fondest memories of past World Cups comes from 2002. With the games played many time zones away in Asia, I had to stay up really, really late to watch the action live. At the time I also didn’t own a television so almost every night for a month I went down the street to a local pub and watched the matches with a bunch of other crazy souls who started out as strangers and soon became friends. Because we have readers from all over the globe living in many different time zones, I am interested in what your plans are for this World Cup.

Today’s Big Questions is actually a number of questions.

For those of you who have to work while the games are being played will you be calling in sick a lot, taking vacation days or watching at the office? For those in Asia, will you be staying up all night to watch your teams? Are any of you actually going to Germany for the matches? Will you watch at home or do you like to watch with others at a pub?

I’ll be in Germany for the World Cup, but it remains to be seen if I will actually see any of the games in person. I am hoping to check out some of the games on the big public screens that will be in the various cities and it is likely I will be visiting a pub or two. The one thing I have going for me is that this job will let me watch almost every game without having to call in sick for work. A blessed man, I am.

What are your plans?

Yes, WC, plans are very importanta. I wont be working, or studying, since University’s in Mexico are closed from June to August. Yai!

Mexico games I’ll watch them with friends.

Common group games POR,ANG,IRN I’ll probably watch them in a bar with strangers, or my girlfriend.

Other interesting games, I’ll see them in home, hope you start a live blog for most games so I can have my computer by my side.

I’m hoping to hit as many drinking establishments as I can to watch them if they happen at a reasonable time where I live. Should be interesting to see how many bars will have it on or if I’ll have to ask for the match :) I’m alway game for any excuse to go out drinking with friends! Otherwise I’ll have friends, beer, and satellite at home I expect.

I’m hoping to get a job only after the WC but if not I might buy a portable TV to watch the main games.

However, here in Brazil, whenever our national team is playing everybody gets the day off to watch it. Or, if you are a doctor in the hospital or a cop they let you at least watch the game while you work.

I’ve seen some bus driver stoping the bus to watch the game in some bar.

However, if I got the time I would like to go to a pub near by, at least to watch the other games.

I really wish to go to Germany but I won’t be possible. I even have friends who live in differents places in Germany who would let me stay there for free but without a job I really can’t afford it.

Well.. well… South Africa, here I come.

I will be in germany for week one and will be seeing USA ITA and USA CZR in person which will mean that i will be watching all the other games with other folks in the various cities either in the public squares or in beer halls or whatever.

back the in the US i will alternate between Tivo’d games, live games at work and home and various pubs that show the matches and have a good football vibe here in New York City including 11th St Bar, Nevada Smith’s and Kinsale Tavern.

Nevada’s is always the most crowded for better or worse.

I have a strong desire to return to mexico city where i used to live and watch with my friends there especially if bad luck befalls the US and good luck befalls Mexico (although they will force me to wearla camiseta tri which would kill me). If the reverse occurs, they may come to the city and watch so we shall see.

This all boils down to one emotion: excitement. Can’t freakin wait!
