Big Question: What will you do if your team is eliminated?
No one likes to think about losses. As an unabashed cheerleader for Angola this year, I am trying to keep the faith that they are going to advance from Group D and lift the trophy on July 9. But I also know that there is an even greater chance that they will lose early. The question then becomes, what to do next. I don’t really have a backup team, but I’ll still want to be emotionally connected to the World Cup.
What will you do if your team is eliminated early in the World Cup? Will you adopt another team to support? Will you cheer mercilessly against the squad that eliminated your team? Will you tune out the tournament entirely and cry alone in the woods? All of the above. None of the above.
What is your Plan B?

Tune out of the tournament???? Is that English you write here? Hehe.
I think, it will depend a bit from where you’re from. If your team is a big one like Brazil, Argentina, England, etc. and they go out early, I reckon you’ll be suffering for the rest of the WC. But if you support a small team like Angola or Switzerland, then you usually have a ‘back-up’ team. You know, somebody who has a realistic chance of winning it and you would actually LIKE to win it (after your team goes out). I know that most Swiss have such a second team. If your team doesn’t have realistic chances, I believe you’re actually enjoying the cup more than otherwise. You know, if Switzerland makes it to the second round…we’re gonna be happy. After that, hei, we had a fairly good WC.
Unlike the Italians and the English who will be heartbroken again! ![]()

When Holland did not make it to Asia’s first world cup I got into depression. However this did not stop me from watching and enjoying the world cup but I admit it was the least one I enjoyed. Having a back-up team ? Never !!! No replacement for the dutch . However I used to support young teams like Senegal and Korea to go all the way and was happy when strong teams like Argentina, France, Italy , Portugal and Nigeria got eliminated from the early stages ….

I cry. Actually its been like that for over, let me see from 1990 until now. everytime Argentina has been eliminated I cried until i had no more tears to shed. But this year I wont be crying, I am going to be singing ” We are the Champions”
viva Argentina
Hey and i do have a back up team and it’s italy( but not the same you know), meaning if they eliminate I do not cry

i think a good idea is to then support the team who knocked you out
and whoever might knock them out then that way half the fans go for one team the other half for the other in the final

Very good question, I guess I´d just continue watching those teams that have been better, because it´s the beautiful game that I like the most.

I will get moody and probably slap my innocent non-football-loving friends just for the heck of it.
But I doubt my team (I support Germany) will get kicked out so easily.

I would be very irritaded but I like the World Cup so much that I would enjoy the rest

Being English, I normally support Sctoland, Wales or Either of the two Ireland teams if/when we get knocked out. As they arn’t in it this year I usually watch the rest of the matches cheering on the underdogs or for a team that has never won the world cup, like spain or holland. Woyuld like to see someone other than Brazil lift it this year.

That’s a trick question, because Argentina won’t be eliminated!
If they bow out, and that’s a STRONG IF,
I’ll have to kill myself by plunging a steak knife through my neck.
Is that too harsh?
Argentina, my life is in your hands.

If the Azzurri are eliminated, I will cheer for any team that happens to be playing Brazil… especially if it’s a European team.
If Brazil also goes out early, I will be cheering for the Netherlands.

I always cheer for my national team the US. But if they get eliminated I switch to the team(s) of my ethnic background. First Germany (75% of my heritage) and then England (the other 25%). Failing that, I go for whatever german or english speaking country is left (Switzerland, you’re on deck!). If that’s not an option then I support whoever is playing against Brasil, as they are undoubtedly the underdogs. I know a lot of my friends here also like to cheer for the country their family orginally emmigrated from. I think in that sense the world cup has a lot of appeal for the casual soccer fans here.

Greetings: Soccer is the biggest festival on the planet, of course the best wishes goes for my country’s team, but one must be realistic, with teams the likes of Brazil, Holland, Argentina, Italy, Germany etc, etc…(in that order)any other of the 32 stars can’t shine enough; I’ve seen the best players parade around for the past 9 world cups Pele, Tostao, Carlos Alberto, Beckenbauer, Cubillas, Zoff, Muller, Ardiles, Kempes, Socrates, Antognioni, Altobelli, Scirea, Maradona, Ronaldo, Nkomo, Claudio Reyna, Wynalda, Meola and they are or were all important without them, there wouldn’t be a soccer fest as big as the world cup. GOOD LUCK to all and may the best win.

I’ll be cheering for England, so you always have to have a backup for when they go out on penalties in the semi-finals. This year my #2 team is Spain, but they’re perennial underachievers. So after that I’ll just be cheering *against* certain teams (like Brazil).

I will stop watching the world cup.I did that when CROATIA was eliminated in 2002.We were weak then, but this time we will defeat the whole world.
There is no way that i can ever have a back-up team.

Well, I’m a total newbie to the World Cup and pretty much to football in general. So I will start with my native US, failing that is England (partially for reasons of family heritage, partially because my boyfriend’s Eglish and would leave me if I didn’t) After that its a toss up between Spain (cuz I live here) and Sweden (again for resons of heritage). Since none of these teams seem to have much of a chance, I suppose that no matter what, I’ll just be sad, and hoping to see an underdog win. I know almost nothing about the World Cup, and I’m already sick of Brazil!!

Having supported the Soviet Union since I was aware of myself, I know just what it means for your team to get eliminated. My favourite team doesn’t even exist any more. Neither does my second team (Czechoslovakia) or my third one (Yugoslavia). But you do find things to intriuge you, and you’re always bound to support somebody.
So, if (or when) the Czechs go out, I will switch to any other Eastern European team still around (Ukraine, Serbia, Poland, and in that order; maybe Croatia too, but depending on how they play). Then, I would switch to a northern european team (England, Holland, Sweden, Germany, in that order). Then any other European team left (Italy, France, Spain, again in that order).
I very seldom support Brazil or Argentina, since everybody else supports them, which really gets up my t*ts; since they’re so good why do they need anybody to support them? I will make an exception in the highly unlikely event they come across a really obnoxious team, meaning:
1. the country which lies south of Canada and north of Mexico, in other words, the most hated country in the world
2. Japan
3. South Korea
4. Any other minnow like Trinidad who shouldn’t be there in the first place.
