Big Question: What is your Best Bet for the World Cup?

By: WC Bob | May 22nd, 2006 | 14 Comments »

I’m not especially the gambling type but I do find it interesting to check out the various odds for the World Cup. From who will win the Golden Boot to who will win the tournament, you can seemingly place a bet on anything and seemingly lose money on anything. But instead of talking about losing bets today, let’s help each other out by identifying what you think is the best bet for the World Cup.

Maybe you think there is an underdog that is going to win a group or even win the whole enchilada. Perhaps you are certain about who will be the top goal scorer. Maybe you’re throwing some money down on the surefire winner of the best young player’s award.

Whatever the category, what do you think is the best bet available for this World Cup?

I like Sweden at 2/1 to win group B and I’d wager a little on them winning the tournament at 36/1. I also like Holland at 10/1 and France 12/1

Here is my list of potential winners . I like ITALY a lot this year (to take it all) and wouldn’t be surprised if Luca Toni wins the golden boot. 30 goals in serie A ( only done twice before -this guy is good).

Regarding the darkhorses I like Spain, CROATIA ( a lot), Serbia and Mexico to round things out. Croatia could be the Greece of the Euro cup- stingy defense ,just enough goals to get by + loads of talent. Argentina has the best shot for a S.American side ( will look to impress after dismal performance in ‘02.)

Top goal scorers would include TONI, KLASNIC, VILLA or TORRES and CRESPO.

In short, one thing you can practically take to the bank : the world cup will REMAIN on EUROPEAN soil. I hate to repeat myself but the stats don’t lie: since ‘66 the cup winners have alternated between Europe and S. America. 2002= Brazil 2006=EUROPE. Take that to the bank!!

Argentina should win the whole thing. They have an easy run until the Semi’s where they will Play Eng and then beat Brazil in the finals.

I agree with Zantheman. Italy is a good bet. Luca Toni as top scorer is also a good bet. Another person that has a good chance to be the top scorer is Miroslav Klose.

DFarina, are you kidding me? England in the semi final? If there’s such a bet, I’d bet England NOT winning it AND Brazil NOT winning it.

who can joke with the talented brazilians.this time italy is a good team but dont forget scolari in porugal.Hope for Argentina winning the cup depends on them risingto the occassion.the czech republic is a team to watch when they get their act together.France and Spain have very little chance of winning the world cup.

I’m betting on the matches with the best return on odds that are also good bets for potential upsets; I like Portugal to win the whole thing. I also like Iran over Mexico at about 8/1 and I’m considering Costa Rica over Germany or Poland over Germany at 12/1 & 8/1 respectively.

Al-in-all, wagering or not, it should be alot of fun.

..like other contributors i can see an argentina v brazil final. i do fancy Tevez for the golden boot (46-1 with betfair) mispriced cos he is virtually unknown in england..also fancy the toni-led italy and england as losing semi-finalists..not sure what to make of holland and france tho disinclined to support czechs or spai since both should lose to brazil by QF

Off course Brazilians are the favourites to win.
But I think England, Argentina and Holland have chances to reach the second place.
Good surprises: Spain, Japan and Mexico.
