For some reason, I’m not as excited watching this World Cup as I was watching the last one. There have been few good games, while there are alot of average ones. Hopefully the tournament will get better.

Overall Positives:
Brazil looked beatable – or at least human – which will be good for the competition. There is no longer one single prohibitive favorite.
Spain decided to finally show up at a world cup. La Furia looks for real this time around.
Italy played open, attacking football. Wow. Catenaccio anyone?
South America got 3 wins out of 4 games – and in European soil nonetheless.
T&T and Australia gutsy, never-say-die attitude.

Overall Negatives:
France’s aparent inability to score goals. One game, and they were already yelling at each other. 2002 flashback!
USA’s regression into the amateur league. At least the “college kids” from 1990 never were short on desire.
None of the african teams managed to pull of an upset.
Ronaldo’s excess baggage and laizzes faire performance. I’m afraid he will not be able to catch Gerd Muller.

Of course, things can change in a flash.

England vs Paraguay. Ultimate boredom. At least with France vs Switzerland, one could admire two first class defensive systems.

I think Czech Republic were dominant against an, as usual, underperforming USA side, but also Spain ran all over Ukraine in a match which was maybe, pre-kick off, looking at being quite a tussle. Germany put in a strong performance against a lowly Costa Rica, but the fact that they conceded two goals themselves is a bit of a worry for Juergen Klinsmann and his team.
Which team has been least impressive?
England for me. With perhaps the deepest list of players to choose a team from, they struggled against a Paraguay outfit, which, let’s face it, is not exactly the greatest team going round. They have a team full of stars, and they need to put together a good result against Trinidad & Tobago so other top-flight teams will take notice. Also: France, USA.
What was the best game to watch?
Although the final 10 minutes of the Australia – Japan match was probably the best 10 minutes of sport i have ever watched, i think the best game was the most one sided match of the World Cup to date, Spain-Ukraine. Spain showed their exquisite attacking flair, and Fernando Torres put in one of the best performances in the World Cup so far. Cristiano Ronaldo take note, Fernando Torres is miles ahead of you. (It hurts to say this being the United fan i am.)
What was the worst game to watch?
Possibly France-Switzerland. Not long ago, France were feared by everyone. They are no longer the force they used to be, as shown by the 0-0 draw.
What result was most surprising to you?
Trinidad & Tobago holding European powerhouse Sweden to a nil all draw. Although Ibrahimovic was unlucky to score, a pretty much no-name (except Dwight Yorke) T&T team did exceptional well to congure up the result they did.

Hmmmm.. The Czech’s seem to of gone under the radar; again, no-one yet has mentioned them. So that’s my first point.

Most impressive: Argentina, Spain, Croatia, and the Dutch.

Most surprised at the quality of control Ecuador is producing – great 1 touch football – (i recon they will emerge with England out of Goup A). Unless T&T storm/surprise tonight !! Then England could be lookin’ at an earlt EXIT.

I sorta feel that the Poland strategy was negative (considering they HAD :) to go for a win) Germany took their chances by a least attacking; Poland should not of been so content with a draw – which they we’re playing for the majority of the game.

Ivory Coast also look GREAT – Group C just might surprise everybody yet.

african nations very dangerous despite lack of success so far – remember that for many of them they have just played their toughest game

us needs to stop pretending the mls can develop players to a top level – they shouldn’t let people on the us national team who haven’t played in europe or south america for at least two years

several teams need to learn that protecting a 1-0 lead is not the right way to go

My thoughts?

Ugh, mostly.

I’m claiming affinity to three teams this Cup: blog subject Poland, “home” team America and France with my favorite Zidane.

Thus far, i’ve been generally totally outplayed, absolutely disappointing, outscored 6-0 and earned a record of 0-3-1.

Poland and the US are by far the biggest disappointments in this tourney. Sadly, Americans will probably learn little about “soccer” once again (and perhaps won’t until Freddy Adu becomes truly dominant) except that they shouldn’t believe the hype.

What’s all the americans issue with England? Didn’t they notice we played a shocker and still won, not getting drubbed 3-0 like they did. As usual the americans posting on this board know nothing about football, they should stick to their own insular sports and leave football to the rest of the world. Football for them is played with the hands by men in padded romper suits.

T&T gave me the greatest thrill, managing a draw against a far-superior side by sheer dint of EFFORT and WILL. Incredible performance by a backup goalie and shorthanded defense, as well as great redemption for the OLD SILVER FOX Benhakker. Their fans can be justifiably PROUD. I just hope they haven’t shot their wad and don’t get blown out in their next match today.

Zidane has become ordinary. Daei was invisible, as was Borghetti. Veira is NOT the “best midfielder in the world” as an otherwise-knowledgeable friend of mine put it recently. Henry didn’t seem to like Arsenal sidekick Senderos in his jockstrap. Germany’s back line STINKS, and will doom them eventually once they leave the safety of their group.

I remain bullish on Sweden, but Lagerback needs to shut his mouth to the press. The African teams have played very respectfully, especially Ghana, and IC isn’t done. Kaka is a bonafide superstar. Robinho needs to replace Ronaldo up front, and Juninho needs some time on the pitch. Pawel Janas is burnt toast, and I can smell Arena on fire as well.

Czechs are not as good as they looked. USA is horrible. Argentina still relies on its old hands. England is overrated as always — and as I said. Ecuador is surprisingly solid and well-coached. I LOVE those Mexican sombreros and “ole,ole,ole,OOOOOOOOH-LAAAAAAAY!” Wanchope ain’t through shopping.

Netherlands were boring. Pauleta needs some help up front. Angola was nervous as a whore in church the first 15 minutes, otherwise played decently. Toni is a HORSE. Dida was rock-solid, Cech thoroughly untested, Buffon quite good, and Schwarzer dumb. Croatia will advance, opening loss notwithstanding. Shevchenko is going nowhere without support, especially from his midfield. Raul off the bench? This may be Spain’s best team ever!

Togo should be thinking of football and not money..disgraceful. Tunisia and Saudi Arabia deserve each other. Ukraine is the most-overrated team in the Cup..even I was bamboozled. Japan was better than I thought. S&M are still dangerous. Brasil is unfazed, but needs to focus less on tactics and more on JOGO BONITO.

LOCO has the best hair by far!!! Gallas was quietly effective. Tranquillo Barnetta was much better than I thought, Landon Donovan and Marcus Beasley far worse than I thought.

Too many teams, fearing that dreaded first loss, were too TIMID – sadly including my beloved Brasil!

Based solely on first performances, Spain is the team to beat at the moment. Argentina, Italy, Germany, Sweden, & the Czech Republic all looked good. Holland isn’t quite there yet, but has promise. Brasil isn’t on form yet.

The Tunisia vs. Saudi Arabia game was what I think was a sleeper hit. No one thought these two almost unknowns would produce such an exciting pace and killer goals!

What was the worst game to watch? Oh man the USA vs. Czech Republic…that was just sad. I couldn’t believe the USA got this far into the qualifying matches and then all of a sudden die out to the underdogs!

What result was most surprising to you? Ecaudor vs. Costa Rica! From what I saw in the highlights it was an amazing game Ecuador outpaced, outplayed, and outskilled CRC! To have a killer 3-0 game lead was just phenomenal!

Best Uniform: Gotta love Croatia. And who is going to argue with the Dutch orange? When artist Barnet Newman famously asked “who’s afraid of red, yell and blue?” he apparently had never come across the fearless Ecuadorian squad.
Which team has been most impressive? The Czech Republic was fast, powerful and precise. Could we be looking at the cup hoisters here? I wait to see what they will do in face of more formidable opposition. I love Calypso, I love steel band, I love Soca music and I would be sad to see T & T go, but go they might right now.
Which team has been least impressive? The U.S.A. was surprisingly dithering, cloudy-headed and uninspired. You’ve got to at least chase the ball, what were they doing there? It was agony to watch.
What was the best game to watch? I can only imagine the Socceroo’s emotional last minute dismantling of Japan had to be scintillating. All war-time rivals make for emotionally piqued battles.
What was the worst game to watch? My English heart weeps for the shackles that bind the legs of my heroes. And I have oft heard rumors of the reckless prescribing of Prozak in the U.S.A.
What result was most surprising to you? Although here in Indonesia we watch the games between 9:00 pm and 5:00am, I am surprised how many times I have fallen asleep before the end of a game, not a good thing in this particular World Cup.

on the contrary,the underdogs have been impressing so far..
