This is Africas world cup, and the defending champions in South Africa 2010 will and African team. Isn’t that great!

These were my predictions for the final 8. I have just noticed there are only 5 European teams in them, which is looking a bit hard on the Europeans. There should be at least 6 of them there. There’s lots of people on the blog who fancy other continents’ chances this year, but they are deluding themselves, I’m afraid. The centre of power is still with Europe.

So, there shouldn’t be more than one non European team in the final four at most. History is a good guide again. Checking the old stats, we can see that the following world cups featured 2 or even fewer teams from Europe in the last four:

1930 (Uruguay): Uruguay, Argentina, USA
1950 (Brazil): Uruguay, Brazil
1962 (Chile): Brazil, Chile
1970 (Mexico): Brazil, Uruguay
1978 (Argentina): Argentina, Brazil
2002 (South Korea): Brazil, South Korea

As should be immediately obvious, all these took place OUTSIDE Europe. This year’s World Cup is taking place in Germany, which is as European as they come.

Now let’s look at three other world cups, and their semi finalists:

1934 (Italy): Italy, Czechoslovakia, Germany, Austria
1966 (England): England, West Germany, Portugal, USSR
1982 (Spain): Italy, West Germany, Poland, France.

We can see for ourselves there that not one non-European team made it into the semis in these World Cups. In all other World Cups taking place in Europe, only one non European team made it into the final four, more often than not in the 3d place game rather than the final (actually only Brazil in 58, Argentina in 1990 and Brazil in 98 made it to the final on European soil).

So these people here (and elsewhere) dreaming of an Argentina-Brazil final are deluding themselves. It’s not going to happen. It wouldn’t happen even if the World Cup was taking place outside Europe.

So, I will make the following predictions for the last four:
Germany
Italy
Argentina
Spain

I know it’s already looking very shaky, but that’s the closest I can get to approximating virtual reality while gazing into my crystal ball. It could be Germany-Argentina instead, which would mean Germany making it to the quarter final, and Brazil again versus Spain, but with Brazil qualifying. I would expect one non-European team to make it into last four. And by non European I mean either Brazil or Argentina. Nobody else can come close to getting a result in Europe. It took home advantage, luck and some of the dodgiest refereeing we’ve seen in a World Cup to get the Koreans to the semis last time. This time, we can be sure it’s not going to happen.

probably what I see is , this year brazil is not going to win the world cup , third place is share by some second rated team and finalist will be as usuall from europe and south america , for south america I will chose Argentian and from europe either it can be italy , england or Germany ( altought I am not at all a fan of german team ) .

First of all…..there is no doubt brazil has the greatest team…..and everyone who says their defense is weak is simply crazy because brazil is known for its ability to defend against goals. They have the greatest strikers in the world, the greatest talent, the greatest experience and the only thing against them is pressure. Unless they mess it up because of pressure or pride……or just pure bad luck sent by a tortured mans dying wish in brazil…. i don’t see how they will not make it to the finals.

Brazil’s greatest fear is sadly Croatia who ahve been improving quite well in the past world cups. Australia, and japan should book their tickets back home…with or without rooney…England simply does not stand a chance. Their players get too much publicity when in reality they don’t compare to the real internation greats…Ronaldo is one to watch…The greatest player on the face of the planet as of now. YES i said RONALDO…not ronaldinho (his time will come).
