Big Question: What are your final 8 teams?

You’ve showed us how smart you are at predicting the groups but now it is time to take things to the next level. We are less than a week away from the start of the World Cup and it is time to get your big predictions down on record so you can remind us all how smart you are after they come true.

Today you get to tell us the eight teams that will make the quarter-finals. Don’t worry about picking the semi-finals and finalist quite yet. For now, go ahead and correctly name the final eight teams.

For a start let’s factor out the teams which cannot make it to the last 16, those that look like completely unable to qualify:

    A: Costa Rica
    B: Trinidad
    C: all could qualify
    D: Angola
E: the consensus on the boards is that all could make it, but I find it hard to believe that the US will get more than a point at most
    F: Australia, Japan
    G: Togo, South Korea
    H: Saudi Arabia

These are the teams that look relatively sure of a place:
    A: Germany
    B: England
    C: nobody
    D: nobody
    E: nobody
    F: Brazil, Croatia
    G: France, Switzerland
    H: nobody

So, to take thisa little bit further
A: Germany should be first in the group. Ecuador is an unknown quantity outside Latin America, and Poland are not one of Europe’s best (they did qualify from one of the weaker groups after all). Should be Germnay first, Poland second.

B: England are sure to qualify, but will they come out first without Rooney? I very much doubt it. Sweden are very useful at qualifying out of the first round, usually doing it with something to spare, while it is about time the Paraguay bubble burst. It’s only a hunch, but Sweden first, England second.

C: I really can’t tell. The teams look very strong on paper. For the fun of it I’ll suggest Ivory Coast (first) and Argentina.

D: It’s going to be close for the top three. There’s just something about Mexico that doesn’t carry conviction, while Portugal are of suspect temperament. But we’ve never seen Iran performing at the highest level and acquitting themselves. I’ll put my neck out and say Portugal first and Iran second.

E: It should be the Czechs and Italy, but who will come out on top? Ghana might put up a close fight, and then it might not. As for the US, I think that everybody would like them out of the tournament, asap. Italy, the more I think about them, are not any better on paper than they were considered to be last time, and the Czechs have indeed aged, but it shouldn’t necessarily show in the first round games, but later on. I am biased, since I support the Czechs, so I’ll suggest Italy first, the Czechs second.

F: Brazil first, Croatia second. The other two don’t have a chance against them. It could even go to goal difference, but that should favour the Brazilians.

G: France first, Switzerland second, but it could just about go the other way. Again, it could go to goal difference. Switzerland seem better than they were at Euro 2004, while France might be a bit worse.

H: If Sevchenko is fit, the Ukraine shouldn’t have troouble qualifying. Spain have failed to qualify from their first round group sometimes in the past, but as this group is, and they do play well, they should come out on top, if only on goal difference. Tunisia just might squeeze a surprise, but not against the Ukraine. I can remember Russia winning against them at a canter last time, and the Ukraine are of similar ilk. Should be Spain first, Ukraine second.

Where does that take us as to pairings in the final 16?

    Germany-England
    Sweden-Poland
    Ivory Coast-Iran
    Argentina-Portugal

Germany-England: England would have Rooney coming back to the side. Yet again, the English would lose at this stage in the cup if they met the hosts. So Germany it is.

Sweden-Poland: the Swedes do well against Eastern sides. The Poles are looking iffy. Sweden it is.

Ivory Coast-Iran: this would be fun, if it were to happen. For the fun of it, I’ll go with Iran.

Argentina-Portugal: Whoever comes from the group of death, except for the Ivorians, Portugal should struggle against them. Argentina it would be if I’m right up to here.

Italy-Croatia: Croatia look good and impressive, but Italy have a few tricks up their sleeve (god, I sound like a football commentator expounding received wisdom). Italy it should be then.

Brazil-Czechs: I support the Czechs, as I’ve said, so I won’t compromise their chances by making them favourites. Brazil, alas.

France-Ukraine: and now for what would come as a surprise. With Sevchenko fully fit, the Ukrainians steal this.

Switzerland-Spain: Switzerland should be looking good up till now, but against the Spanish, they might come apart like in 94.

So, the final 8 might just look like this:

    Germany-Iran
    Italy-Ukraine
    Sweden-Argentina
    Brazil-Spain

Only thing is, it won’t. All thanks to the blog for allowing us to indulge ourselves.

  • Artie Adams

Paraguay, Argentina, United States, France, England, Mexico, Brazil, and Korea*.

    * Korea only because I have absolutely no idea who else will come out of G/H.

  • DT

    Germany vs Holland
    England vs Portugal
    Italy vs France
    USA vs Tunisia

Yeah, Brazil’s not there. I fancy USA to beat Brazil in the round of 16 by penalty shoot-outs.

  • Stuart

    Germany v Netherlands (Netherlands)
    Italy v Korea (Italy)
    Sweden v Argentina (Sweden)
    Brazil v France (Brazil

Anticipating the next question; who’s your final 4…

    Netherlands v Italy (Netherlands)
    Sweden v Brazil (Brazil)

    …and for all the money…

    Netherlands v Brazil (Netherlands…Go Oranje!)

Germany and Ecuador would definitely come out of Group A, not Poland.
I’m confident Germany can retain its place in the World Cup after that, but Ecuador looks a little shaky for the second round. Nevertheless, South Korea surprised the world with its victory over Italy last World Cup so, hey, it can happen with la tri.

  • princedesparcs

Just a couple, triffling surprises …

    Germany, Poland
    England, Sweden
    Holland, Ivory Coast
    Portugal, Mexico
    Italy, Czech Republic
    Japan, Brazil
    Switzerland, France
    Spain, Tunisia

    Sweden v Holland
    England v Ivory Coast
    Italy v Switzerland
    Czech Rep v France

  • werttrew99

This being the World Cup, I figured that there has to be some wild, unexpected events. So I guess France, Germany, Italy, and Czech leaving earlier than would be expected and Croatia, Tunisia, and S. Korea going further than expected.

My predix (first place listed first)
    Group A Germany, Ecuador
    Group B England, Sweden
    Group C Netherlands, Argentina
    Group D Portugal, Angola
    Group E USA, Italy
    Group F Brazil, Croatia
    Group G Switzerland, SKorea
    Group H Tunisia, Spain

Next round, * by the winner
    *Germany vs Sweden
    *Netherlands vs Angola
    *England vs Ecuador
    *Portugal vs Argentina
    USA vs *Croatia
    *Switz vs Spain
    *Brazil vs Italy
    Tunisia vs *S.Korea

    Next round:
    *Neth vs Germany
    *Croatia vs Spain
    *Port vs England
    *Brazil vs S. Korea

Neth beats Croatia, Brazil beats Portugal.
Brazil beats Neth for the crown, Portugal takes third.

Errr, Chakan, check the records for The Czech Republic, the Swedes and the Dutch, will you?

The Czechs are not a new country, they are the successor to Czechoslovakia of old; their record includes two final appearances, btw. As for the Netherlands: two finals, one semi. And as for the Swedes: one final, three semis. In my book, these are better records than the Portuguese one.

As for the Serbs, they are the successor state to Yugoslavia, with two semis to their name.

Please, people, Serbia and the Czech Republic are the successor states, recognised by both FIFA and the United Nations as such.
