Big Question: Does the Champions League help or hurt World Cup Players?
If you’re like us, you’ll be glued to the tube watching the Champions League semifinals today and tomorrow. It certainly is a treat watching an all-star cast of World Cup players in action. A few weeks back we read an insightful piece in the Observer, which points out that there are a lot of Brazilians, Italians and Argentine players left in the Champions League but not English players. It begs the question of whether it is an advantage or a disadvantage for World Cup teams to have their players playing in such a high level competition during a World Cup year.
This is a question that has left us a bit stumped. On the one hand national teams would like their players to not be overextended heading into the World Cup. Players in the European leagues have been at it for months now and have played more than their share of games already. Extra games in the middle of the week only add to the fatigue and likelihood for injury.
At the same time, the level of play in the Champions League is so high that there really is no better preparation for what players will face at the World Cup.
What do you think? Do the Champions League, UEFA Cup and similar competitions help or hurt World Cup players?

Players who get to the quarterfinals and beyond of the Champions League are fully switched on and up to play late in the season.
The Champions League is the ultimate for a club player to win, the pressure is enormous, just look at the this Barcelona v AC Milan game tonight.
Great preparation for the likes of Ronaldinho.

At first it helps. But now, so close to the World Cup it hurts. It hurts because in a semi-final the player will do whatever it takes to win, even if it jeopardize their fisical condition to play the WC.

If players will have a full month to get ready, I don’t think it can hurt them. Only those with serious injuries. Argentina blog seems to be worried about some guys, so you never know, right?

I think it can only help. Injury is always a concern not matter what part of the season. Fatigue could be a question but playing several games in a short period is what they have to do to Win the World Cup so this can only help them be prepared for that type of enviroment and game freguency.
