Best World Cup Goals so Far

With four more games remaining, we can only hope that we will see some goals that will be among the best of the tournament. There have been some excellent goals already in this 2006 World Cup. Below are the video clips of what I think are the top 5. You are welcome to agree or disagree by offering up your thoughts on the best goals of the tournament so far.

1. Maxi Rodriguez – Argentina vs. Mexico

2. Esteban Cambiasso, Argentina v Serbia & Montenegro

3. Fernando Torres, Spain v Ukraine

4. Tie: Philip Lahm & Torsten Frings, Germany v Costa Rica

5. Joe Cole, England vs. Sweden

  • Jan Burgers

The joe cole goal should be at least in third place.

  • chris

I love Martin Tyler’s commentary. He summed up the Cambiasso’s (Argentina’s) goal perfectly from the moment it hit the back of the net. “One of the all time great World Cup goals. And Cambiasso….has the honour of rounding it off.”

  • matt

wat bout zambrotta’s goal? It should be in the top 5.

  • GhaleonQ

Clearly, Esteban Cambiasso’s (or, rather, Argentina’s) goal deserves the premier position. I may have cried out more loudly after other ones, but that was the only goal that left me speechless. Tyler’s commentary was fitting, too.

  • http://www.3kilos.co.uk James

Joe Coles goal is basically a harder version of Maxi’s goal. So Coles is the best so far. If his name was Jose Colio of Brazil, you would have it number 1. but wait, its the English pig dogs, we cant give them any credit at all.

  • Angie M

I liked Frings’ goal… had some real power and well placed.

  • geo schneller

Hemry’s goal from Zidane yesterday should be place somewhere in the top five, as much for the pass as for the airborne strike itself.

  • deco

Rodriguez Maxi’s over time wonder goal against Mexico that decided the match.

  • FiNi

Esteban Camiasso goal, or the whole argentina team goal was a lesson of football.
You go to the dictionary to look for the word football and you found a video of that goal
    Just great!

  • dietmar

i really liked tomas roscicky’s? goal against the us, or you know klose’s header to tie the args was very nice also!

  • yaju

Rodriguez is right footed and he hit it with his left foot. There is no doubt that goal is the best in this world cup so far.

Argentina’s team goal against S&M deserves its own class. I haven’t seen a goal like that in last 3 world cups. Can anyone think of any?

  • Se7en

I think this order is perfect.

The only goal that was nicer than Argentina’s team effort, was the Maxi zinger.

It’s such a shame that Argentina is out of the tourny.
They were playing the best soccer of them all.

  • Jack J

Maxi Rodriguez is so far the best goal. When seen in slow motion, the chest stop, the drop to his left, the perfectly timed shot to the left corner, are like a choreographed ballet. I would like see it set to music

  • http://espn abcc

    srna free kick
    croatia

  • tgidi

Can’t disagree too much with the order but Joe Cole’s could have been placed higher. Would have liked to see Ribery’s goal for France against Spain up for consideration.

  • miranda

    How about Pauleta?

  • tom

    Heeeenryyyyyyy!!!!!! ;-)
Great pass from Zizou, great shot by Henry, great play by France. Allez les bleus!

  • http://ampasoftaol.com Marcus Ampadu

Easily, the best goal so far is by Sulley Muntari, the Ghanaian midfielder, who scored the second goal against the Czecks.

  • soulreaver

maxi rodriguez and joe cole fight for the first place if we speak about the execution(a slight advantage for maxi because he is right-footed) but when it’s about teamwork i think the goal of fernando torres against ukraine it’s a good rival for the one of cambiasso against serbia

  • ZEEZEI

I would say Argentine boys mad some spectacular goals. Cambiasso’s goal is the best and then Maxi’s!!!

Argentina what a team and players you have just wonderful!!!

  • Eddie

Joe Coles goal is almost a clone of Maxi’s….but Maxi hit it with his off foot, so he gets the prize for sure, of 2nd place.

#1 is the Argentina team goal, that was incredible to watch, just jaw dropping.

2010 will be an amazing WC for the albiceleste with Messi in full force and a new coach who knows how to do subs.

  • Jodido

Maxi’s golazo is also the best because of the situation…an extra time game-winner. Beautiful! I hate to see El Tri go, but to go on that goal is ok.

  • Alexandra

Frings and Lahm of course especially Frings cuz he put all that force and power great props to GERMANY’S PLAYER
KEEP IT UP U’LL WIN IT ALL THE WAY TO THE WORLD CUP
    MUAHZ BESITOS MIS AMORES

  • Melrose

The best goal was Ronaldo’s from Brazil. He is the best player. It should be in the TOP 5.

  • OilerFan

The Maxi Goal was simply breath-taking, and the fact it happened in an extremely high-pressure situation against a strong, persistent Mexico side makes it #1 for me…it changed the course and tone of the game.

The Cambiasso goal was just magic too, i’ve seen every WC since 86 and i’ve never seen anything like it, it was a lesson in team play and every young kid aspiring to be a foot-baller musta watched that in awe and been inspired the way we were. It was a classic. I cant wait till 2010 to see what the Argentines can do the next time around, at least they are memorable.

  • Jon

I can’t believe no one has mentioned Clint Dempsey’s goal off Beasley’s beautiful pass against Ghana. It was the only goal the US scored for themselves, but boy was it a beauty.

  • Joe

I think Klose’s header against Argentina was one of the better goals so far in this World Cup. The play leading to the strike was perfect, and the actual header accurate and strong. The timing of the goal was also special.
However, it seems to me that the quality of the finishing touch this World Cup has been poor. So many teams have been in unbelieveable striking positions and somehow miss. Lets just hope that the remaining matches don’t need to go to penalties, and let the more creative teams find the back of the nets.

  • rad|x

    Rebrov’s goal vs Saudis.

  • http://ampasoftaol.com Marcus

Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty kick against England was a blast. He walked gallantly to the spot, jumped several times on the grass to level the spot, kissed the ball, put it firmly down, killed enough time to psyche Robinson, the English goalkeeper, and rifled the ball to the upper right corner of goal post while the bewildered goalie guessed wrong by diving in the opposite direction. What a knock-out blow! Ronaldo cannot go back to play for Man. United after scoring such a magnificent goal.

  • dirk

I thought Henry’s goal was marvelous because of the setup. The French played it so well. I also thought Klose’s goal against Argentina was magnificent because of the pass on header.

  • Bdog

Ronaldo schools Ghana goalie to break the record. Also I loved Maxi’s shot it was tight.

  • unseenop

The only thing that made me happier than seeing England eliminated was seeing Brazil eliminated and the only thing that can top that will be to (hopefully) see Germany lose. Regardless, I think Joe Cole’s goal is the best because it was shot from further out than Maxi’s and it hit the crossbar which made it even harder for a keeper to stop.

  • Luke

Joe Cole’s goal was tougher than Maxi’s, Cole had to drop it over the keeper while Maxi moreso had to just put it past the keeper. And honorable mention to Klose’s game-tier against Argentina, beautiful pass off the head to Klose.

  • Santiago

Maybe is because I’m ecuadorian but I think Agustin Delgado’s 2nd goal, the one he scored against Costa Rica, was a great goal. Just look how Mendez delivers the ball inside the area and then Delgado beats the keeper with a lightning! Maybe its not top 5 but for me its top 10 for sure

  • Jan Roskott

Tim Cahill’s second against Japan anyone? Deco’s goal? Van Persie’s free kick? Maniche’s goal against Holland?

  • Jan Roskott

Oops! It’s a top 5! I thought Top 25… Forget my post. I do think Cambiasso’s should be the top one though….

  • Patricia

1 – Maxi Rodriguez’s which gave Argentina the winning ticket (Argentina – Mexico)
2 – Zambrotta’s – gave Italian the platform to win the match (Italy – Ukraine)
    3 – Beckham’s free kick – the ticket to quarter-final(England – Ecuador)

  • dirk

Can’t argue with any of the foregoing, but any Socceroo goal was great! I want to be there when Australia hosts the final

  • Joe

A tough list to make, certainly, and I can’t really argue much with the choices, other than the Torres goal. Personally I thought his goal against Tunisia was better, flicking it off the outside of his right boot after beating the keeper.

I have each game on disc, so I’ll go back and review the group stage goals one day, but I thought there were five solid ones in the knockout stages alone, though of course these are not the 5 best. Anyway, I think these five should be on an honorable mention list at least.

    1. Henry taking Zidane’s free kick and putting it in the top of the net against Dida, Brazil.

    2. Ronaldo’s ’step-over’ and juke of the Ghana goalie. I am not a big fan of the player, but that was a nice display.

    3. Beckham’s free kick against Ecuado– up-down and bending to the near post. Keeper was stranded, and probably played it poorly, but what a shot.

    4. One of Podolski’s goals against Sweden. Klose takes three defenders with him across the box than passes it to Podolski who puts it past the keeper and into the net. Not a bad build up, somewhat like the Cambiasso goal against S&M.

    5. What about goals from flicks on? i.e. Rafael Marquez’s goal against Argentina at the back post. Very quick and the keeper really was left for dead.

Certainly there were other great goals in Group Play as well, i.e. the Ivory Coast goal against Holland. I don’t remember who shot it, but I do remember the pace and Van Der Saar unable to reach it.

Great gootball compilation. I agree with the order, but there are definitely some great plays missing: notably Henry/Zidane’s duet against Brazi and Beckham’s (bye!) curling free kick.

  • http://www.angel.cc mick angel

    erm.. “gootball” = “football” :-)

  • sifa

All there really is to be said about this issue is that the goals and the proformance given by numerous countrys throughout this World Cup has been very intertaining and just shows that in 4 years at the next world Cup we will be the number 1 most watched and loved World Wide sporting event finaly SOCCER RUlES! And so do soccer fans!!!!!!

  • mj

i personally loved joe cole’s shot
    it was amazing
and it was so cutte and cocky of him to when asked about it he went it was early in the game and i thought i’d test out the goal keeper

I think Maxi goal against Mexico is the best. And also Cambiasso goal. Could it be any team can perform 24 passes before scored a goal. It was magnificant.

  • Adam

some super goals there with out a doubt maxi rodriguez goal was the goal of the tourny the situation he was in umberleiveable but where our timmi cahil ppl that was magic in thos circumstances and what about rosicksy goal against the us

  • heinz

I dont think there was a better / bigger goal than Grosso’s.

Maxi Goal was great and also big , and there were many wonderful goals this tournament but for Grosso to curve such a perfect shot at that time of the game in the semi finals featuring two Monster teams is the best.

  • Capper

There were some very nice goals in this tournament but I think that some of the best goals have been Henry’s goal against Brazil, Ronaldo against Ghana, Joe Cole against Sweden, Alessandro Del Piero against Germany, Grosso against Germany, Scweinstagger against Portugal, Nuno Gomes against Germany, Paolo Wanchope in the first game of the tournament, one of Rossickys goals against the USA, Beckhams goal against Ecuador, Pirlos goal against Ghana, the Japanese goal against Brazil was really nice one of the best in my opinion, Fernando Torres against Tunisia but i kind of wish that Trinidad had scored against England. You can see what im talking about at fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/ look at the England-Trinidad game highlight.
