Belgium and Holland for 2018 World Cup

By: WC Bob | April 19th, 2006 | 12 Comments »

Thumbing their noses at their pesky little Benelux cousin Luxembourg, football officials from Belgium and Holland have met to discuss the possibility of co-hosting the World Cup in 2018. The two countries managed to put on a fine show during the 2000 European Championships and they are excited by the thought of being flooded by hooligans and rogue presidents from around the world 14 years from now. We bet Belgium also wouldn’t mind that automatic spot that goes to the tournament host. For those keeping track of things at home, here’s the projected lineup for future World Cups.

2010
South Africa – A done deal assuming they find the money to upgrade their stadiums.

2014
Brazil – The front runner if they can improve their stadiums.
Argentina/Chile – The fallback choices if Brazil doesn’t happen.

2018
Belgium/Holland
England – Last hosted in 1966. Might be a sentimental choice.
Australia – Putting in a weak bid so…

2022
Australia – ….it can host in 2022!

2026
Mars – The ball is even more perfectly round when it rolls on another planet.

2030
Uruguay – Would be the 100th anniversary of the first World Cup and it is easier to travel to than that joint Neptune/Uranus bid.

I cheer for Portugal. They did a superb job for EC2004, so lets give them the big boy.

Ya … Canada doesn’t have many good stadiums does it? It would have to be similar to what we are doing for the FIFA U20 World Cup in 2007 (games stretching the entire country, Vancouver to Montreal). Let’s hope that goes well!!!

@soze: I was there, in Porto, Faro and Lisbon.

For real, most of the Portuguese people were super friendly but the volunteers are helpless and the infrastructure is catastrophical in some kind of ways. The mass transportation was not any prepared, and that was only a EURO.

That’s not to be meant as an upset against the people, but the EURO 2004 was not so well done by organizational means. They planned well but the execution lacked style and cities were not ready. The only city that could cope with a mass invasion by footie fans is Lisbon.

Canada could host a World Cup, but needs better venues. There are only 4 stadiums of 55,000 plus capacity. None are soccer specific and only Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton has grass. Expansions to 45,000 to 55,000 and conversions to grass would be needed in Calgary, Winnipeg, Ottawa, and Hamilton. Montreal Olympic would need a conversion to grass. Stadiums in Vancouver and Toronto are not convertible, and would require brand new facilities. If all of these changes were made, Canada could fill them.

Canada could put in a bid and it would be welcomed by Sepp Blatter. Canada would have to propose at least 10 stadia to be in with a chance and maybe the large geography would play in its favor. It is also a good reason to give the American market another shot as many americans would travel to Canada for the games. The Rogers Centre, BC Place, Commonwealth Stadium and the Olympic Stadium could already be used as well as maybe the stadium in Calgary, but would need expansion of up to about 60-70 thousand. Ottawa, Winnipeg, Hamilton, Québec would need new stadia, which are required anyways as they have almost none at the moment and if Calgary get the Commonwealth Games then that would be another 40,000 + stadium for Canada. Canada’s biggest problem though is the lack of National Team success. It is imperative Canada make at least the final of the next Gold Cup and Qualify for the next world cup if they want any chance of hosting the wc as every host so far has qualified for the 2nd Round and FIFA would never give a country without a good shot the WC.

2018 should deffinitely go to England, the homeland of football! All other big European countries have hosted it more recently then England, who have only ever hosted it once…back in 1966…52 years ago by the time 2018 rolls around!!

England already has lots of world class stadiums and plenty more are lined up; we have the cities, the stadiums, the infastructure and an unmatched level of fan support!!

:)
