Australia Defeat Greece in World Cup Send Off

By: WC Bob | May 25th, 2006 | 6 Comments »

The Socceroos had a successful send off match in Melbourne, beating Greece 1-0 in front of 95,000 or so fans. Josip Skoko’s goal in the 16th minute proved to be the game winner for Guus Hiddink’s boys. If you are like me and you missed the game, you can read the blow-by-blow account from our mate Chris who stayed up all night watching the Chinese bootleg version on his computer. That’s dedication. Our blogger Matt was at the game and offers his views. The Socceroos now fly to Europe where they will face the Netherlands on June 4 and Liechtenstein on June 7. Could Australia be a surprise team this World Cup? It will be fun to find out. Video of the goal below.

After Australia made changes (Skoko & Viduka) they did not look threatening at all. Evan though they seemed well organised the play was somewhat sloppy. Australia’s passing game needs to be a lot more sharper and fast otherwise a team with speed such as Brazil will use that speed to capitalise on this.
High light was Skoko and that even though Harry did not play Australia got a result against the European Champions.

Looking forward to Holland! Go Australia!

I believe Australia will get a good result against Brazil.

Rescorpione17, Cheers for the comments mate. I too hope we give Brazil headaches and can even snatch a point or a beloved win.

It’s good to see Skoko play again for the Socceroos. He always plays well for Oz. Our midfield is going to be one of the strongest in the World Cup.

Hiddink should sort out any problems for the Greek game in time for the Dutch game. He is such a master that I think he will even sort out or defense (which has been our weak point).

Bring on Japan!

Beating the Greece side who could not care where the ball was during that friendly 1-0 is pathetic. If Australia was World Cup quality thay should have beaten that side 5-0. the players could not care for the result. thay got 1.5 million euros for coming to Australia and to them it was just a holiday. Australia still needs to make their team more cohesive and time their runs better if they are to score a goal in Germany that wont be a penalty
