A World Cup Adieu for Zizou

By: WC Bob | April 25th, 2006 | 9 Comments »

Zinedine Zidane has made it official. The World Cup will be his final act as a football player. The France midfielders said on French television today, “It’s my decision and it’s final. After the World Cup, I will stop playing football. The World Cup is my last goal. That’s the only thing I want to focus on.” Zidane’s play has certainly declined the past few years, but when you look back at his career you see one of the more skillful players in the sport’s history. Our favorite description of Zidane comes from former Real Madrid great Alfredo Di Stefano.

“He dominates the ball, he is a walking spectacle and he plays as if he had silk gloves on each foot,” Di Stefano said.

Here’s hoping that the silk gloves still fit this summer in Germany.

Here is a nice tribute video. The music is great so you’ll want to watch with your speakers on.

Good bye, cheese-eating surrender monkey :-)

Thanks for giving the Brazilians the asskick of a lifetime in 1998!

I feel like I am missing history when I see that players like Zidane are retiring. Stupid U.S. coverage of soccer sucks so eith I pay out the nose for one channel that has soccer from Europe or I am out of luck.

It was fun watching him play in the World Cup!

I’ll never forget the game against England in Euro 2004…I had paid for the entire Setanta pay-per-view package, something like $150 for the tournament. After the first day, I was starting to have some regrets, so I was hoping for a good game between France and England. I was disappointed, and then he took that free kick…and then the penalty. Magic.

[...] This one´s for you my fellow Zizou admirers. Check out this Video (7 min 58 sec) containing only a few of his best scenes. Funny how he´s joking around with Ronaldinho, who´s a pretty good magician himself as we all know. [via] [...]

Zizou is one of those player that makes the hardest things look easy when he played…

A great lost for the football fans, but it shows the greatness of retairing when you still are in the top of your game and don’t want to stay just for the money…

Thanks for posting this video! It really demonstrates just what a bad mofo Zizi is. Zizi is my favorite footballer, and i was slightly depressed when i read the news the other day, o boy.

I’m so torn now…i’ve already got my guys Poland and my exciting ex-homeland team America (with red, white and blue hero Tony Meola!) competing for my affection. How will i be able to cheer against les bleus?

Cheers, all.
