A Million Thanks and a Look Ahead

What a ride it has been. For more than six months we’ve been blogging about the World Cup and it hardly seems time for it to end. We have a lot of people who contributed to the unbelievable success of this project that we’d like to thank, but first here’s the scoop about what is coming up next.

We’re going to keep World Cup Blog alive. The tournament might be over, but there will still be plenty of news about national teams, especially with the build up to Euro 2008 and qualifying for the next World Cup. With Sepp Blatter in charge of FIFA, we should have no problem staying busy and keeping you entertained.

We are also planning a top secret site dedicated to all things club football – English Premiership, Serie A, MLS, the Modolvan super league, your men’s league, you name it. We’ll let you in on our secret, the site is The Offside. The plan is to get things cranking in a few weeks once my fingers recover from the World Cup. You can check out the site or this very space for the official launch.

Although my name has appeared on World Cup Blog a lot, this site has become what it is through the blood, sweat, and typing of a lot of people. First and foremost are the 40+ men and women who blogged about the various countries. Their words informed us, entertained us and inspired us. These were people who took time from their busy lives to help enrich the World Cup experience for all of us. I can’t thank them enough.

A site cannot run on mere words alone. World Cup Blog has been blessed to have unbelievable marketing and technical teams from the good folks at the BootsnAll travel network. I have no idea how they keep things running, but I am grateful and humbled by their efforts. They are good people. Use them as a resource for your travel needs.

A site cannot run on mere pennies alone. The many sponsors on this site have been tremendous and a pleasure to work with. Thank you for believing in our mission.

Special thanks to our friends at AOL Sports and to all of the journalists who did their job to make our job easier. I would also like to thank all of the blogs and websites who have linked to World Cup Blog and who have supplied us with story ideas, tips and information about the beautiful game. This World Cup will be remembered for many things. One of them will be the explosion of the blogosphere. We are all better informed because of it.

If it is possible to thank an entire country, than our gratitude to Germany needs to be expressed. It has been our home for the past six weeks and the German people have made it feel like home with their friendliness, help and willingness to put up with our broken German phrases.

Finally, I would like to thank all of you for visiting the site and for leaving your comments. We have had more than 3 million people from countries all over the world come through our virtual front door. Your passion and enthusiasm for the World Cup is what made this site a success and what made it so very much fun for all of us.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Keep World Cup Blog bookmarked and while you are at it go ahead and bookmark The Offside.

Warmest regards,

Bob

    thank you World Cup Blog.
    we’ll miss you acutely :(

  • http://www.sportnetwork.net/main/s379.htm cfc069

Thanks World Cup Blog. Can’t wait for ‘The Offide.’

  • Miguel

I’ve enjoyed reading the posts and articles on the WC blog, thanks Bob!

  • Fair_Play_Boy

I hope next time an African team will win the WC. But no matter how good they are…there are always corruption. Either the game is one sided or they go all the way to score their own goal.

  • black

    THANK YOU

We all had a great time

  • Massimo

My thanks must go to Zidane.

We love you for making Italy win.

For deciding that you were not going to let France win at penalties.

You must be rewarded by at least someone.

I think Zidane should get a goalden award. Maybe a goalden head award.

Thanx Zidane I hated you now I love you.

  • joli

I hope this “worldwide party” and enthusiasm will continue and also hope that some of you have changed your minds about Germany and the German people. “Sie sind bei freunde und wilkommen Alle!” Prost!

  • http://www.vertebratesilence.com/ vili

Thanks heaps for the finest World Cup coverage!

  • james

thanks to WC Blog for keeping us all informed. I am excited to hear about the new site.

Thanks to Germany for hosting a great world cup i was lucky enough to be there for the first ten days and what a great time we had and it sounds like the fun didn’t stop for the whole time. Well done.

i guess we all have a hole in our hearts this morning (except italians of course) as we look out into the barren wlderness of world sport where the only thing worth watching at the moment is a depleted tour de france and major league baseball. how depressing.

I have been meaning to excercise more and i have a few books to get through. I guess now is the time to start….

  • Stuart

Nicely done guys, really fine work! Aside from the arrogance and ugliness from a handful of people that seemed to dog every topic, it’s been a lot of fun hanging out online and talking football with the rest of the world. Glad to hear you’ll be keeping it going.

I’d still love to find a way to setup a screen reader interface to my computer’s sound system so I can use the live blog as the audio for matches (many beers for any programmer that can pull that off and share it with the world!).

  • Bye Bye

and thanks. what happened to zidane?

    Thanks, Bob!

Thanks Bob and the rest. For a wonderful coverage. Lots of good discussions. Looking forward to the offside.

    Keep up the good work.

  • Patti

Thanks for adding to the joy of the World Cup! Looking forward to The Offside keeping the passion going!

Messi – 2010 Golden Ball Award!!!

  • carrie

It is sad that it ends here. I wish we could all stay here and comment on our favorite teams until the next WC. I had a wonderfull time reading your comments. From time to time you guys pissed me off by bsing on my beloved Argentina. But we will be back in 2010 and win the Cup. I believe Africa will bring good luck for us.
    Vamos Argentina
    Love you guys

  • Fatuma19

Thanks for recruiting a typical American non-soccer fan! It might have also helped that my fiance` is a fanatic ;-) I cant explain the joy and excitement the tournament, and the blogs, has brought to my life this past month. As a sign of support to this beautiful sport, my fiance and I are heading to South Africa for the 2010 World Cup!!! Keep up the good work World Cup Blog!!! See you in South Africa :-)

  • squiggle

Thanks very much, and thanks to all who contributed intelligent comments. :)

All I wanted to say was that the Italian’s got so lucky yesterday and if Zidane was in the game all the way, all of you would be crying right now, so enjoy all you want and remember that you will and always will be known as trash talkers that are full of themselves. Italy sucks!

  • Lisa

All I wanted to say was that the Italian’s got so lucky yesterday and if Zidane was in the game all the way, all of you would be crying right now, so enjoy all you want and remember that you will and always will be known as trash talkers that are full of themselves. It’s funny how proud you all are but not many people know that whats happening back in Italy with soccer is you guys pay people to become winners. Italy sucks!

  • Rajesh Dsouza

Being a football freak for a16 years now, i begin to realize that football is now taken up seriously everywhere. It was a long lost dream to see italy win ( and that too on penalties) after the disappointment of 1994..maybe i could say i was one of the rarest ones from india who started following football religiously at a very young age..i feel today, that everything was worthed cos my respect to this game is unimaginable.I hope down the line all of us can work or contribute to one goal….bring the spirit of football to every country in dis world…i dream of helping India get somewhere to that day when we can see them playin a WC…The Beautiful Game will go on ….

  • Kristina

    Thanks Bloggers! Amazing job!

How sad, how unbelievably sad that the elegant Zidane did what he did.

I’m still feeling the disappointment that France lost. I only wanted them to win to see ZZ retire with fireworks:( Please ZZ don’t retire now, play a few more games!

To all of you there, bashing this man and throwing the harshest words at him…well, he’s just a human being. He disappointed many, yes…But why do YOU get mad sometimes? How’s that quote..”the one without sin, cast the first stone…”

I can’t wait to hear what Materazzi has to say (I’ve seen the YouTube movies about his “talent” when it comes to DESTROYING people on the field!)

    ps: I’m not French..I’m Romanian-American

  • Claude

Thanks Bob and the whole world cup blog. You guys were terrific. Maybe you guys can get a job at ESPN doing the Champions league, Euro 2008 and WC 2010. I bet you’d do a better job than who they have now. Put me down as a reference if you want. Good Luck guys and I hope you enjoyed my homeland. There is more to Germany than beer and hairy women you know.

  • Laura

Thank you to all of you at this site. My first World Cup experience was fantastic and at times hysterical. You hooked me! I plan to stay in touch. Love ya.

  • anonymous text

next world cup please let all speak their mind as long as it relates to the game. I’ve seen a lot of editing by the admins that seem bias towards their teams. Don’t moderate the views of those who care to speak in a civilized manner -because freedom of speech to an extent should be allowed with the exception of those who are name calling and suggesting racism or any other off color topic. good job otherwise!

  • enzo

many thanks for a great site, Bob, and also a thank you to Matt who ran the Australian blog.

  • sergio

i was dissapointed.. i did not learn anything from the blogs that i could not pick up from reading the newspapers.. on the argentina blog for example there was even misinformation posted and silly predictions not based on any facts… next go around i recommend having people who actually know the teams they are posting about doing the writing..and who know about soccer

also there was too much stupid bashing.. just a lot of bashing in general actually..too many haters…

we will see you in 2010…

  • Razzle

    Massimo – you suck
    Bob – you rock

    Thanks for the great site.
    Already waiting for 2010.

  • kte

Ahhh so sad to see the world cup end. Zizou was absolutely amazing and mattarazzi s*cks, there is a thing called respect and a bit of deference for le maestro, it was sad to see zz have to go off and see france lose. Allez allez les bleus! Zidane you are the finest player the world has ever seen.

  • OmarKhayyam

Good work, folks! This is the first world cup I followed both on television and on the laptop.. and can’t say I haven’t been addicted!

  • nicko

Big thanks to the people who’ve held this site together, awesome job :-D

after the aussie loss, this site summed up all emotions with the line ‘absolutely gutted, speechless’

can’t wait till next next time around … omg 4 years is sooooo looooooong :-(

  • nicko

hmmn, after seeing the troll Massimo in action again, I do have a suggestion: One off registration, the guardian does this for its blogs. This means that you don’t have to shut down whole blogs when things go burko (eg. after the portugal/england game), instead you can just ban annoying users. (well or at least frustrate them a little).

  • Affin

Great job, Bob and the gang.

Bob & Co: thanks a lot, you’ve been great, and the blog was a very nice company for me during many matches of this WC. I hope I will read you again in 2010 (or why not 2008?).
Again, you’ve delivered some great stuff.
Thanks, gracias, grazie, danke, dank U, merci.

  • John

THANK YOU ALL! the blog has been great. I am Argentinian..living in USA and LOVE football!!!
I LOVED the Argentinian blog!!!IT WAS THE BEST!!!

    Roberto Bonito!

  • Julian

Thanks guys it was very informative! I think even more informative then official sites out there! that’s how great this place is! What makes it so great is that there are so many people from around the world out there who conglomerate here, but the trick is that they all come with news, updates, and inquisitive gestures! I guess globalization is good for something huh? hahah

    thanks everybody!!!

  • miz garcia

thanks to all and especially to argentina for entertaining us wif two most beautiful goals in world cup!!

  • russ

I’ve been watching/playing soccer for over 50 years. It is amazing how many people I can tell do not know too much about the game or its history are giving comments solely based upon emotion, mostly australians, americans and Canadians. Facts: 1.Historically France does not come anywhere close to the glorious Azzurri achievements.
    Just check it out .
    2. In this tournament
    a. Italy scored more goals than France.
    b. Italy conceded fewer goals
    than France.
    c. Italy had fewer penalties
    than France.
    d. Italy had by far more of its players score (a defenders team?)
    e. Italy’s coach was a genious- how about sending in 3
    attackers as substitutes in
the game against Germany (a defenders team?)
    f. Zidane almost missed the penalty kick, which was at best questionable,by hitting the crossbar. There is no question
    about Italy’s goal and they
put 5 penalty kicks in the
    net.
    g. The offside by Toni Luca is questionable.
    h. What Materazzi said is irrelevant.Thrashing is not uncommon in Sports.
    i. What Zidane did is ugly
and detrimental to himself and the Sport.I could go on, but add the above and draw your
conclusion.- Dont be emotional or patriotic or sore losers,be rational.

  • roger

110% agree with you, Russ, probably because I also have been watching/playing soccer for 50 years.

  • azzurro

Russ and Roger, it is really a pleasure to see finally someone talking with technical rationale about facts and how these facts drove the result of WC. Majority of people of this blog (I guess) do not have cultural background/story about soccer and they talk just based on emotions.

  • dino

Zidane is a disgrace to the GAME,his nation, team, chidren, sons and fans. Justice was done-France lost. Cannavaro should be given the award, instead. Redemption for Zidane is not in the CARDS. He is not worthy since with one act he erased what he accomplished before. He needs his brain examined.

Great job Bob and everyone else!

Your comments have been witty and insightful, whereas bloggers like Dino’s outrageous, misinformed remarks have also been laughout-loud funny.

  • romeosalta

This will give you an idea of what kind of a person Materazzi is.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpG4AHlZrL4&search=Materazzi

Is Italy proud of this individual? Is this the way they train their players to play?
