A Group-by-Group Rundown of World Cup Squads

By: WC Bob | May 15th, 2006 | 7 Comments »

All those teams, all those rosters, all those names…the World Cup squads have come in fast and furious, making it a challenge to compile a complete list of World Cup rosters. Our bloggers have been announcing their teams’ rosters for the past couple of weeks and delivering some great insights. We’ve taken their thoughts and compiled the rosters into the various groups so you can keep an eye on your team, as well as the teams they will face in the first round. After looking through the rosters, I can honestly say that I am off the charts excited about this World Cup. There are a lot of talented teams and interesting storylines that are going to be a whole lot of fun for all of us to follow. Can we kick the thing off tomorrow?

Group A

COSTA RICA

Norwegian-based forward Roy Miller is left off the mostly domestic-based list of player.

ECUADOR
Striker Ivan Kaviedes named to largely domestic-based team.

GERMANY

Jerzy Dudek does not make the team.

Group B

ENGLAND
Sven named 17-year-old he has never seen play to World Cup squad.

PARAGUAY
Teen sensation José Montiel has his ticket to Germany booked.

SWEDEN
Alexander Östlund out - Karl Svensson in.

TRINIDAD & TOBAGO
Anthony Rougier doesn’t make the cut, Evans Wise might be in for Cornell Glen.

Group C

ARGENTINA
Scaloni makes it; Zanetti does not. Peckerman’s team is strong up front.

Cote d’Ivoire
World Cup selection is very similar to African Cup of Nations runner-up squad.

NETHERLANDS
Van Basten picks youth over experience.

SERBIA AND MONTENEGRO
Uncapped Ivan Ergic the only real surprise.

Group D

ANGOLA
Uncapped keeper Mario selected; six forwards make the squad.

IRAN

Four German-based players lead the way for Team Melli

MEXICO
Jaime Lozano, Joel Huiqui and Israel Lopez don’t make the final cut.

PORTUGAL

Ricardo Quaresma will play for U21 team and not in World Cup.

Group E

CZECH REPUBLIC
Czechs counting on injured players to heal in time.

GHANA
Deadly’ Derek Asamoah will watch World Cup from home.

ITALY
Buffon, Inzaghi are headed to Germany.

USA
Brian Ching makes it, Taylor Twellman does not.

Group F

AUSTRALIA
Hiddink selects veteran team; German second-division striker Josh Kennedy called up.

BRAZIL
Few surprises for Brazil’s star-studded selection.

CROATIA
Dudu doesn’t make it, but the team is a blend of experience and youth.

JAPAN
Zico picks striker Seiichiro Maki instead of Tatsuhiko Kubo.

Group G

FRANCE
Uncapped Franck Ribery and Pascal Chimbonda added to experienced squad.

SOUTH KOREA
Few surprises, Lee Young-Pyo races against time to get healthy.

SWITZERLAND
Playmaker Koebi Kuhn left off squad. Uncapped Basel midfielder David Degen makes it.

TOGO
35-year-old striker Backirou Salou does not get a trip to Germany.

Group H

SAUDI ARABIA
Goalkeeper Mohammad al-Deayea, the most capped player in history, makes the squad.

SPAIN
Fernando Morientes left off team as coach Luis Aragones opts for defense.

Defender Mehdi Meryeh and striker Yassine Chikhaoui are new faces for the Carthage Eagles.

On that same note, Switzerland, a Country in Europe, South of Germany and north of Italy, “should” be found in Group G :)

Yeah, I would imagine Switzerland would be unhappy to have to play in a five-team Group F. Thanks!

Excellent blog. I was surprised among other things for:

1) Poland: Absent of Dudek.
2) Mexico: We already knew about it but I have to mention Cuatemoc Blanco
3)Argentina: How is posible that Zanetti is not going to Germany?

I have been waiting for months for these rosters to become clear. I will be breaking things down by group for you as time allows. I imagine many of those familiar with my sports knowledge will bet your house mortgages, but be sure to read my complete rundowns before you do. Surprises always abound in the World Cup, you know.

I’m not sure, but think “Pingback” said (above) that he agrees with all of my predictions so far. Thank you, they are not easy to make with all the ever-shifting fortunes of all the teams.
