Lionel Messi proved his value to Argentina this morning, helping los albicelestes come from behind to win 2-1, which combined with Australia and Serbia's 1-1 draw, leaves Sergio Batista's squad atop Group A.

While not toally convincing in their debut match, it was a deserved victory nonetheless, and a result against Australia this Sunday could see Argentina book a date in the knockout rounds. Please check back here Sunday for a live blog of the Australia match, and remember to leave your comments below.

If you missed this morning's game, please click on one of the links below to watch the match in full.

Please be aware that there may be spoilers on either page. The NBC video on demand looks great, but yesterday they were displaying the scores on the media player as it was playing, but last I checked it appears they stopped doing this. Later tonight I'll post a recap on this blog of the match, including the score.

The wait is almost over. In just a few hours, Sergio Batista will field his starting XI with the hope of retaining their Olympic Soccer Gold Medal. Please use this space to post your thoughts leading up to, and during the match. Again, you can watch the game live on Telemundo at 7:45AM ET/4:45AM PT. You can also watch a live stream on NBColympics.com/Soccer.

One thing to take note of: While NBC's site is showing games on demand, in a very good quality player I might add, for some unknown reason, the link you click on to watch the recap

Looking forward to seeing Argentina defend it’s Gold Medal at this year’s Olympic Summer Games in Beijing? Well, the good news is that all the games will be available either through Telemundo, one of 7 NBC networks, online through NBC's Official Soccer Portal, and even on a dedicated cable channel called the NBC Olympic Soccer Channel.

The bad news will come in trying to find your way through the muck, since what time you watch will depend on your cable and/or satellite provider, as well as the part of the country you reside in. Added to the confusion is NBC's

As expected, FIFA today ruled in favor of clubs releasing players for the 2008 Olympics, and with no surprise, Barcelona will seek to appeal to the Court of Arbitration.

Here below are reactions to today's ruling:

FIFA: The single judge of the Players' Status Committee, Slim Aloulou (Tunisia), decided today, 30 July 2008, that the release of players under the age of 23 for the Men's Olympic Football Tournament Beijing 2008 is mandatory for all clubs.

Lionel Messi: If FIFA says I must stay, then I'll stay. If they say I can go, I'll join the squad without waiting for the

Today, FIFA released the following statement:

The single judge of the Players' Status Committee, Slim Aloulou (Tunisia), decided today, 30 July 2008, that the release of players under the age of 23 for the Men's Olympic Football Tournament Beijing 2008 is mandatory for all clubs. Previously, on 29 July 2008, the FIFA Emergency Committee also took a decision in the same sense.

The decision of the single judge was taken after FIFA had received requests from the German football association on behalf of its affiliate club FC Schalke 04, as well as from SV Werder Bremen, FC Schalke 04 and Spanish club FC Barcelona directly, in connection with the release of their players under the age of 23 for the Men's Olympic Football Tournament. The single judge, while referring to the situation of the players belonging to the clubs in question, deemed that he should address the question of the release of all players under the age of 23 for that competition.

Tomorrow could be a decisive for Argentina's Olympic Gold hopes, with FIFA set to announce their decision on whether clubs should allow their players to participate in this years games in China. At the center of this controversy of course is Lionel Messi, Argentina's brightest and youngest talent, who at the moment has been blocked from joining Sergio Batista's squad by his club, Barcelona.

With Argentina's first group match against Australia Nigeria only days away, things are not looking good for Messi, with any decision in favor of la pulga will most certainly be appealed by Barca to the Switzerland Court

Alberto Gallardo was a classic winger...
check out what he did to the great Carlos Alberto
1970 World Cup in Mexico.

For those who did not see him play, Gallardo played for AC Milan 1963-1964.
He could blast it with either foot...
And a tremendous shot vs Bulgaria same World Cup 1970.
