Your Monthly Laugh: The Latest FIFA Rankings
It is our favorite time of the month with FIFA providing the comic relief with its latest rankings. As was expected, there has been no change at the top or the bottom. Brazil is firmly planted in the number one spot and despite our best efforts American Samoa remains the lowest ranked team in the universe. Everyone knows these rankings are nonsense (USA is #4 now!) and we are determined to do something about it. That’s why we have the World Cup Blog Power Rankings. Your rankings – the World Cup teams from 1 to 32 – are due to bob [at] worldcupblog.org by the end of the day Thursday. We will reveal the newest Power Rankings on Friday. Until then, have a chuckle when you look at what FIFA has to say about the World Cup teams.

Hey if things keep going like this the USA will be #2 by the middle of the World Cup. Then if we do not make it to the second round (I hope we at leaste do that) we will be back out of the top 10.

Do you think Joseph Blatters Uncle Chuck and Aunt Marylou have been putting some pressure on him when it comes to team USA’s position in the rankings?

It’s not like they make them up, if you go to the fifa page, there is a pretty good explanation of how they get the rankings.
I am not saying they are the best way of telling wich team is best. But untill now it is the most acurate sistem.
I think instead of voting we should make a recomendation to Fifa on what to count and what not, based on their actual raninngs.

[...] Since I am merely a guest blogger until Wendy returns from her much deserved vacation, I can stir up a little trouble, get you all to hate me and then leave for higher ground. With that plan fully in place, I’m ready to tell all the Czech Republic fans out there that your team is not the second best team in the world. FIFA has been telling your otherwise for a long time now, but we all know that those computer generated rankings are not the most accurate. [...]

[...] Well Tunisia is 21. Does anyone ever speak of them as much as that ranking would warrant? No , however this could change after a strong showing in June. [...]

[...] Well, the computers at FIFA have kept Angola ranked in the 58th spot for another month, but take a look at our competition: [...]

Come on!! I believe that someone in the “ranking commision” is drinking or sniffing too much…
The ranking is a joke… I’m not saying this because Paraguay is 33, but you just need to look at it and there are teams that I don’t know how it made it into the list.
And my strongest point is that is not the same playing a qualifying phase with Argentina, Brazil, etc. that playing in some cases with almost amateur teams…

[...] After reading the last FIFA Ranking, I don’t know if I am conform, surprise or upset. I really can’t affirm if the position #33 to Paraguay is right or not. Like the opinions of the Ecuador’s blog, I don’t know if we deserve to go higher in the ranking, but looking other teams in that question is hard to answer. If Paraguay really worst than Iran, Côte d’Ivoire, or Costa Rica? Could USA really be four? And Mexico six? In my opinion this isn’t right, but the beauty of this situation is that in less than 50 days we will start having some answers to all these questions. [...]

Luis Carlos have a point. The Coca Cola (coke, he he he) ranking is not about who is better NOW. Its a mix of recent results with recent history. AND some games are more important than others. Read this:
The factors used are:
* Friendly match x 1.00
* Continental championship preliminary x 1.50
* World Cup preliminary match x 1.50
* Continental championship finals match x 1.75
* FIFA Confederations Cup match x 1.75
* World Cup finals match x 2.00
This means that qualifying matches are weighted 50% higher than friendlies, continental final round matches 75 % higher and matches during World Cup finals twice as much.

Just had an interesting thought. There is no way possible for the teams ranked 1-4 to all make it to the semi finals. The reason for this is that if Both the Csach and USA make it out of group E one of them would have to play Brazil in the second round. Not that both or either of them will with Italy in the group but it would have been nice to see the top four make it to the semis to make the system look better.

To Euler and luis Carlos, that is exactly the point. The problem is precisely in the system used to make the rankings. U have to agree that this system has to change. And i don’t agree with u luis carlos that this is the most accurate ranking. Check out the ELO rankings:
http://www.eloratings.net/
The top 10 (elo rankings):
1 brazil
2 netherlands
3 england
4 spain
5 czech rep
6 france
7 italy
8 argentina
9 portugal
10 denmark
Well, it;s atleast better than the FIFA rankings.
