October 2007 FIFA World Rankings

By: WC Bob | October 24th, 2007 | 6 Comments »

argentina-number-one.jpgIt is that time of the month where we all gather around the fireplace and take a look at how FIFA’s computers rank the world’s football teams. The algorithms for October 2007 are disposed towards Argentina, which is the new number one team in the world. A pair of World Cup qualifying victories apparently helped their cause. At the same time, Italy won a pair of games but fell from first to third. Lower down on the list we see Scotland is 13th, their highest ranking ever, despite losing to Georgia in Euro 2008 qualifying. Not everything changes, however. For the two thousandth month in a row, American Samoa is the world’s lowest ranked team.

Scotland deserve to be as high as they are after their results against WC QFinalists Ukraine and France. If they can topple Italy in their last group match they should be a top six side! England are really struggling at the moment and I don’t now how their ranking can still be so high. They have only eaten one top 10 side in the last four years - Argentina in that Geneva friendly almost two years ago.

Scotland in the top ten. Give me a break. The games they are winning are just qualifiers, Scotland haven’t won anything substantial in their history and they lost to Georgia! There is no way this team is top ten, NO WAY!

Hey - I’m not Scottish, but you can only beat who your matches are against. I think the rankings are quite good and at the very least they create debate among international football fans between tournaments. But I think they have improved the factors used to calculate them in the last couple of years and they are fairly accurate reflections now. And because there’s a bit on the rankings for seedings at the World Cup, it should force teams to take friendlies a bit more seriously.
