FIFA World Rankings November 2006
Like a menstrual cycle, once a month FIFA’s World Rankings come into our lives and they leave us all with a bit of discomfort. As is usually the case, Brazil remains the number one team in the world and American Samoa continues to revel in being the worst team in the history of the world. In between, some teams moved up and some teams moved down from last month’s rankings.
Among the big movers, Russia moved up 10 spots to number 23 in the world, proving the mere presence of Guus Hiddink works magic. Nigeria is now a top 10 team even though they didn’t qualify for the World Cup and everyone knows there are at least 15 teams out there that are better. Fidel Castro might not be in great shape, but Cuba rocketed 22 places and now is number 46 in the world, right ahead of Japan. Tajikistan also advanced 21 places, although that might change if they fall hard in the Elf Cup.
The big losers include the United States, which is out of the top 30 for the first time in seven years. Uruguay dropped 12 places, which is pretty bad but not as bad as St. Kitts and Nevis’ 23 spot freefall. Do you supposed Kitts is mad at Nevis or is it the other way around?
