February 2007 FIFA World Rankings

By: WC Bob | February 14th, 2007 | 15 Comments »

Death, taxes and Brazil ranked number one by FIFA. Those have been the certainties in life for the past 55 months, but alas they are no more. Death and taxes are still around, but Brazil has been replaced by Italy as the number one ranked team in the world. That only makes sense since, you know, Italy won the World Cup back in July and all that. Fortunately there is still at least one other certainty. American Samoa is still the last ranked team in the world. Well, tied for worst but we all know they suck the most.

Here are the top 30 teams.

1 Italy 1562
2 Brazil 1540
3 Argentina 1535
4 France 1496
5 Germany 1359
6 England 1330
7 Netherlands 1312
8 Portugal 1262
9 Czech Republic 1193
10 Spain 1161
11 Ukraine 1018
12 Croatia 987
13 Greece 926
14 Switzerland 913
15 Romania 912
16 Sweden 894
17 Cameroon 893
18 Denmark 876
19 Mexico 857
20 Scotland 854
21 Côte d’Ivoire 853
22 Ghana 848
23 Poland 844
24 Uruguay 829
25 Ecuador 828
26 Turkey 825
27 Russia 817
28 USA 783
29 Serbia 775
30 Paraguay 755

Only one other certainty, Bob. EN and HL will be ranked higher then PT after consecutive spankings!

Has anyone actually ever calculated these to see if FIFA’s calculations work? Or better, is there any site that shows FIFA’s actual ‘worksheets’ - we should start a petition site…

I still don’t understand how (and I am bias - i’ll fully admit it) they shrink the historical period to 4 yrs and with PT beating ENG and HOL twice each in the two top tournaments, Euro & WC, how they can be ahead of PT.

Someone help me understand…

Bob, I think you should start supporting Timor Loro Sae, rather than American Samoa… They’re both (Samoa and East Timor) ranked #199 but East Timor means something to us portuguese… TO RESIST IS TO WIN!!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xanana_Gusm%C3%A3o

This is from 2002…:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/1997437.stm

BTW, just to anoy the brazillians a bit, I guess if they hadn’t lose against PT, they’d still be #1, as they’ve been for the last 55 months… ;-)

About PT vs HOL and ENG, maybe if we lose we get higher rankings… ;-) Maybe if we blame the other team’s players for poor fair-play while we stamp on the balls of one of them OR maybe if we start a game with our shoes held high and then tell the world “they” did it (mammy, they’re the bad guys cos we kicked them but they didn’t fall, they rather cried, scored and won, so you see, that’s a terrible thing to do, mammy), maybe that would help… ;-)

BTW Caldas, you’re forgetting something all dutch have still very present in their minds… They failled WC 2002 because PT outqualified them… One draw and one victory… After being 2-0 down most of the time, I think, we (PT) scored a great goal and then scored the 2nd, which kinda finally put the nail in the coffin for them - they’re waiting since 1991 to beat us… ;-) But hey, PT is also waiting for a long time to beat France, in a juicy semi-final… ;-)

Darn I was hoping the US would move up more (actually maybe it’s better that we don’t, our “Top 5″ Ranking didn’t help last summer).

OK Bob, you get one for American Samoa, I get one for E Timor… Right now things aren’t looking good for them, actually… Now we just have to find somebody for Belize, Djibouti, S. Tome, Aruba, US Virgin Islands, Montserrat and Guam… ;-)

How does Nigeria fall from number 9 to 36 after losing to Ghana? How is the Ukraine ranked 11? Why is England still in the top ten?

Hey TSN,

Croatia beat an Italian B team in a friendly, that’s hardly something to brag about. In order to make the top ten Croatia have to forget about 98 and focus on getting out of the first round in major tourneys. I mean you guys beat Italy, Argentina, Germany and England but you can’t beat Japan, Equador and Australia????
