Who’s Going to the Olympics? The Men’s Squad Rosters, All Teams

By: Laurie | July 30th, 2008 | 13 Comments »

You asked for them, so here they are. The rosters for all of the men’s teams heading to the Olympics. Kind of.

It has been amazingly difficult to compile these. The FIFA site? No luck. (Probably because, as Barcelona will be quick to tell us, this is not a FIFA event.) The official Olympics site? No go. The NBC Olympics coverage site? They give us this nifty map with flags showing where in the world the teams are from, and some cool profiles, but no rosters.

And so I’ve used a variety of sources, from multiple news articles to Wikipedia to our own blogger Dave Martinez to our good buddies over at SoccerLens. Problem is, these sources do conflict. (One of my sources, a supposedly legit news article, listed a forward as a defender. And there are multiple times when sources list different players, possibly because my original sources were dated as much as two weeks ago and things have changed since then.)

Over the next week we’ll be doing everything we can to provide accurate update to these rosters. But for now, enjoy the work in progress and leave corrections in the comments. (And if you were to also leave links to your sources, you would become our newest, bestest friend.)

Also, we’re looking for a few good bloggers to cover our uncovered teams, both men and women. If you have interest in any of the following teams and would like to blog about them through the Olympics (and possibly beyond,) contact Daryl, daryl[at]theoffside[dot]com.

For the women, we need all teams except USA: China, Canada, Argentina, Sweden, North Korea, Brazil, Nigeria, Germany, Norway, Japan, New Zealand. For the men, we need: Ivory Coast, Serbia, Japan, China, New Zealand, South Korea, Cameroon, and Honduras.

And now, the men’s squad rosters to the best of our knowledge. (Women will follow soon.)

Ha. That’s the kind of thing I’m talking about — it was accurate when I put the Brazil part of the post together a couple of weeks back.

that’s cool..

Brazil/Argentina have the strongest squads..

I think it’ll end up being Brazil, with Dinho being the hero..

If you want to be official, Italy’s official reserves are:

Antonio Candreva, Andrea Ranocchia, Andrea Russotto, and Salvatore Sirigu.

and some squad changes: Sirigu actually now is on loan at Ancona from Palermo, Ranocchia plays for Bari, Abate plays for Torino, Cigarini for Atalanta, Dessena for Sampdoria, Russotto for Napoli, and Candreva for Livorno.

It’s interesting that in Brazil squad Robinho is “injured” (as
worldcupblog.org describes it), but Bundesliga stars
Rafinha (Schalke, 22 years) and Diego (Werder, 23 years, NOT under 23)
will probably participate.
I think, in the end it’s always the players who will decide.

Same with contracts and a player wants to leave (to a bigger
club). If a player wants to leave (or wants to play at
olympics), you have bad chances to hold him, despite the
figures written on a paper.

Motivation is a key figure in soccer and nobody is interested
in a demotivated players.

Day1star, each team is allowed 3 over-age players to make things interesting. The complicating factor is that clubs are only required to release the U-23 players.

Rumor is that Real Madrid wasn’t at all happy at the thought of releasing Robinho. And now he’s injured. Or “injured.”
