It’s the Big One: Argentina vs Brazil at the Olympics
There are few rivalries in international football to touch Brazil vs Argentina. Sure, other rivalries are fierce (England vs Scotland or USA vs Mexico) but nothing with such an abundance of talent on both teams.
Even the old argument about who is the greatest player of all time comes down to Argentina vs Brazil in the shape of Maradona vs Pele. (even though it’s clearly Steve Bull, everyone knows that)
The rivalry continues tomorrow in the 2008 Men’s Olympic Football Semi-Final…
Both teams are out to win, obviously. Unlike their European counterparts, South American teams take Olympic football very very seriously. Argentina are the current gold medal holders, while Brazil are on a mission to win the the only tournament that still eludes them.
Argentina have brought Juan Roman Riquelme, Leo Messi, Javier Mascherano, Sergio Aguero and a planeful of young talent like Angel di Maria, who scored the winner in the quarterfinal against Cameroon the Netherlands.
Brazil have brought Mr. Ronaldinho himself, as well as Diego, Anderson and all kinds of other players like the phenom that is Alexandre Pato. Except the phenom has been a little on the unphenomenal side in Beijing and will likely start tomorrow’s game on the bench.
Since the two teams first met in 1914, there have been 93 Argentina vs Brazil games. Argentina have won 34, while 24 have ended in a tie and Brazil have won 35. So right now the Brazilians are ahead by just one win – which just so happened to be the 2007 Copa America final:
The semi-final kicks off Tuesday 19th August, 9pm local time.
To figure out what time that is for you, click here to see what the time is in Beijing right now.
The other semi-final (Nigeria vs Belgium) kicks off three hours earlier, 6pm local time.
The final (or gold medal match) is August 23rd, 12:00 noon kick off, local time.
UPDATE: Video highlights of Argentina 3-0 Brazil and Nigeria 4-1 Belgium can be seen here.

fab, no bias. it’s just that that’s the game that gives Brazil the one game historical lead.

Argentina played Holland in the quarterfinal, not Cameroon. That was Brazil

thank God theses games aren’t at like 2 or 3 am anymore

I am first and foremost a brazilian fan albeit I am not brazilian but argentina comes second to me. I like argentina’s football but find their inferiority complex annoying I mean, why do they have to constantly define themselves by comparisons to brazil? brazil is a powerhouse, for each good argentinian player there are what? five brazilians of equal or higher caliber out there? look at the last eurocup, how many brazilians were playing for european national teams? we are only beginning to see robinho unfold as a great player and I already read about pato, nilmar, felipe melo, there is a great attacker who wants to play for brazil but has italy knocking at his door to play as an italian. facts are facts and if it weren’t for the corruption in the brazilian football politics brazil would win most tournaments but don’t because they plan teams made out of individual talent that doesn’t get the time together that they should get.
I am tired of this pele maradona crap because while both were great players the fact is that pele is out there on a class by himself as a complete player who played in rough days and I know this because I watched him play. marking on those days was rough.
come lately I have not truly enjoyed how the team plays and I think dunga has to go and make room for a more seasoned coach who can find the balance between the beautiful game and the strategy needed to win in today’s tournaments. I want brazil to win but if it loses to a great day of argentina then I will be happy because one south american country is likely to take the gold home.

Wow. What a game for Argentina. Brazil got a couple of tough breaks, but on the whole were a huge disappointment.

Answer to “Mane”: Learn a little bit about Argentine football before you make your silly comment. Argentina’s players are so good that are sought after by the major leagues in the world. They do not have an inferiority complex dude, they just KNOW HOW GOOD THEY ARE. Get it???
If you are so much in love with Brazil, why don’t you just move there? Varig is the airline that will take you.

I am Brazilian and I want to THANK Argentina for that well deserved humiliation. It’s what we needed for this crap football we’ve been playing under the unimaginative Dunga. It hurt like hell but maybe now the CBF will wake the hell up and do something about this travesty of so-called football we’ve been playing. Argentina are a fantastic team, they deserve to keep the gold medal.
And mane — you really don’t know wtf you’re talking about!

anton I wouldn’t mind brazil but I live in the greatest country on earth: AMERICA!! and I am not a fanatic like most argentinians around here who remind me of the nut jobs in england and other parts of europe who turn sports into a disgrace. gimme a break, it’s only about 11 guys running after a ball.
also, I have never denied the quality of argentinian players which is why I can’t understand why each time argentina plays brasil it turns into such a big deal. it’s just another game but the attitudes in the argentinian press and in this blog reflect the inferiority complex I alluded to, you guys project that complex not the rest of us. just look at how argentinians define their success celebrating defeating brasil as the threshold? pathetic to say the least.
sandrahn what don’t I know? isn’t that true that the cbf is the biggest problem in brasil? isn’t that true that pele’s career leaves maradona looking like nothing? did you see garrincha or pele play? I did, I also saw maradona play and he was good but never close to pele or even garrincha. look around the world sandrahn, there are brazilian players playing all over the world and even in national teams from japan to spain. brazilian players are the best in the world but bringing them together as a team is a challenge.
look at the list of the best players in the world: rivaldo, ronaldo, ronaldinho, kaka, brazil rules girl and that’s no coincidence.
the bad thing about argentina is that they diminish their victory with their inferiority complex and only mexico is second to their sickening chauvinism that led a famous argentinian writer to say that the best busines in latin america is to buy an argentinian for what he is truly worth and then selling him to argentina for what they think they are worth. pure profit

Expand the wall of the first half of each other.
Argentina攻め込むkeeping the ball in Brazil’s press quickly and in front of the goal to consolidate
State did not make quite the chance to shoot.
MASUKERANO to distance shot that hit the sign, I think.
So much that, in the first half of the 0-0 days.
However攻め込みhas gradually started to cross-AGUERO DIMARIA to push a pre-emptive!
DIMARIA exceeding an early shot from the left to cross their stomachs on the body AGUERO per押し込みましたto change course to guess.
To “get shot” and call!
Argentina is more aggressive, with the goal MESSHI cut from the right, into the wrapping, which is once again AGUERO押し込みました.
MESSHI break, was pulled DF Brazil,崩さbalanced by a point, I think.
2-0, and Argentina is still an advantage to promote the game, AGUERO was knocked down in the penalty area to get PK.
RIKERUME This is a game to decide the set 3-0.
RIKERUME settled down in the middle of込みましたkick.
Brazil is 3-0 in the TSUNORI’ve got a foul until the first attempt two red thread. This is completely decided.
[Reviews]
Frankly it as a result of this difference is not powerful enough.
Just last year, “the finals of the Copa America Argentina Brazil ×” and reverse the expansion.
(Shock! Brazil once again to lose the match against Brazil [2])
This game (the finals of the Copa America match against Brazil) and Argentina is 0-1 after a pre-emptive, was shot打ちましたRIKERUME惜しくもis阻まpost.
It has been decided if the game is still deployed, the results had at least 0-3.
The match (Beijing Olympics Brazil game) but Argentina is 1-0 after Ronaldinho’s shot was阻まpost.
This also results in a large deployment would have been changed.
RIKERUME players about the presence and force it to break MESSHI AGUERO and did.
Both of them alone can break through, it could upset Brazil DF.
As for the race from the back gave me a free DIMARIA. DIMARIA I think I did well.
The power and keep one’s ability to break through to become a good player. (But still a good player)
The rest is still MASUKERANO defense force. MASUKERANO of the second half, to keep the ball by the two players back from Brazil to Farr, red card and was disqualified. That, MASUKERANO, there is a greater danger on the other side. And, for the RIKERUME marked one of the things that had to concentrate on it?
Gago is also good at the base of the midfield. Miss defense that is anxious to play and had the participation of the attack from behind and showed good movement.
And, GK, but Ustari participated start of the injured Sergio Romero, but have some catching reaction and anxiety.
Managed to get me well, but anxiety about the final point挙げれSergio Romero, it should be.
Anyway, in Brazil’s 3-0 victory over old foe, the finals of the Copa America果たせたa matter of revenge is very喜ばしく, honesty win it (gold medal) is larger than that.
