Comcast Doesn’t Care Whether You Can Watch Olympic Soccer Or Not

when I think of the Olympics the last thing I think of is soccer because they never show the games in the US.

That sucks. I got up this morning and was surprised to see that my Verizon FIOS channels all changed, but also that there’s an Olympic channel there now. I hope they show the soccer games

I wouldnt bother Laurie. I have Comcast here in CT, and trying to get any information out of them is impossible. They over charged me $200 on my last cable bill but refused to lower until I went to the regional office and started throwing papers at some account manager. The Olympics is best viewed like all European soccer is viewed, with a warm cup of coffee and a fresh, illegal Chinese stream on your computer.

Just got done with a chat where the comcast person said it would be available, the NBC Olympic Soccer Channel, and that I wouldn’t have to pay extra for it. Whether they were just shining me on is another matter, but at least they are saying I will get it.

Fan’s Attic, where are you located? I read on another message board that individual areas have the ability to opt out. It would be helpful to know which areas are actually offerin it.

According to this article from a few weeks ago on MultiChannel News, Comcast has confirmed they will carry the channel. I would trust that more than CSR chats.

If it’s okay with you, I’m going to take a small excerpt from this and post it on my site as part of my take, but I’ll give you full credit for it.

First, let me start by letting you know I work for Comcast in Seattle. Second, as the father of a soccer-crazy teenaged daughter (go Emerald City FC!), I get where you are coming from. It would be great to have more games to watch. But I think there is some good news here for the Comcast markets like Seattle that are not planning to air the Olympic Soccer Channel. We are going to be carrying more than 1,200 hours of Olympic coverage on a bunch of NBC Universal networks, including NBC HD, Universal HD, USA HD, USA Network, MSNBC, CNBC, Oxygen and Telemundo. There also will be a lot of special clips and other extras available on Comcast On Demand and on http://www.comcast.net/olympics. In addition, I understand that Olympic coverage will be available for download on NBC�s website. OK, I know this may not meet the needs of every die-hard fan, but I do think there will still be lots of great Olympic soccer content available to watch, in addition to all the other soccer games that are regularly carried on the Fox Soccer Channel.

Ugh!! I’m such a soccer fan, if these world class soccer games (2008 Olympics) are not going to be televised and/or easy to find on the television I am going to be very upset.

Several nights ago Direct TV announced on air that they would have exceptional Olympics coverage, including the four NBC channels for soccer, etc. That’s the last I heard of that.

I have Comcast AND Directv and, as of right now, they don’t believe they’re carrying it. It’s amazing how clueless some of the employees are on this. I’m not giving up hope because Directv says on their website that their olympic channels are going to be 750-756. Yet no employee knows what’s on these channels yet and there’s no link to that ad on their website. Those 7 channels could be the 7 original NBC-owned channels broadcasting the olympics (NBC, MSNBC, CNBC, USA, Universal HD, Oxygen and Telemundo) OR it could include the 2 special channels (soccer and basketball). I can’t get an answer. And we’re just 4 days away. Amazing! As a soccer fan, it’s not the end of the world since, on average, there will be 2-3 games on each fixture day (men’s and women’s), but it would be nice to record all the soccer games on one block, in english and on one channel.

I have Comcast, too. Don’t my fellow Comcast subscribers know that the company is trash? Crappy internet, shitty customer service, and they never let you know when they add knew channels. Is this really a surprise to you Comcast subscribers?

Well. I just saw this come across the official NBC website a few minutes ago. If you scroll down it lists all of the participating cable companies and the services and channels offered for the Olympics. Comcast IS there with this offering lower down: · HD sport-specific channels: NBC Olympic Soccer Channel and NBC Olympic Basketball Channel, approximately 12 hours per day during Games.

Bryan, that NBC news is awesome! That wasn’t there last week. I won’t claim responsiblity, but I was definitely one of those applying pressure for them to make this list available. The squeaky wheel DOES get the grease.

Jury’s still out on Comcast. I know that most people around the country have either been told their local folks were NOT offering the channels, or (as in my case) their customer service reps had never heard of the Olympic channels, then promised to call back but didn’t.

I finally heard back today from Comcast — not about my original, phone request to my local Comcast, but as a response to the email I sent as a last resort to the head Customer Service guy which linked to this post. I wasn’t there to take the call, so I need to phone back to find out which Comcast areas will, in fact, be offering the channel.

I’m technically off this month, but I’ll put up a post to let you know what I find out.

Laurie, I’m a comcast subscriber and also a sports package subscriber, I’ve had a similar chat with the online rep as well. They are clueless about it. I search through my channel line-up everyday and do not see any new channels being added. This is very frustrating!

Jake, I’m playing phone tag with my “Comcast Customer Care Representative” — the one who has, in theory, been assigned to call me back because she has actual information. As soon as I hear back from her, I’ll write a follow-up post. Stay tuned!

Wow. Glad I do not have Comcast. Cox has followed through on the Soccer channel. However, it is only available for the HD subscribers. The down side is that the channel does not start airing until after the openning ceremonies. My guess is that the decision to delay the channel was NBC’s because they want good numbers for the opening ceremonies. The upside is Cox will be running the games on-Demand as well as having athlete profiles on-Demand. FYI – I do not work for Cox, just lucky enough to be in their subscription area.

Comcast knows nothing about the products they are supposed to have. Every season I order Extra Innings (the Major League Baseball package) and the operator or clerk has to look stuff up and take forever. They sometimes act like they don’t even know what baseball is!

Just called Comcast, I live in Baltimore County, MD. They say it’s to be on channel 221, but is offered in HD alone and since it’s not up yet I believe it won’t be till the opening ceremonies. Doesn’t work for me as I don’t have HD. Need to look elsewhere.

Well, at least we can catch ALL of the soccer games sans commentary on NBCOlympics.com. I just watched four different women’s soccer games today online. Men’s soccer is tomorrow!

In the NYC DMA Comcast will be adding the Basketball and Soccer HD channels by the latest Saturday (right now trying to expedite the additions).

I live in St. Paul, MN. I just called Comcast and they said that these channels would NOT be carried. He said the satellite companies had them, but that for us–Comcast customers–the soccer and basketball games would be extensively covered on, you guessed it, NBC.

I called Comcast this morning before I read this article, and the conversation went exactly as described. My rep told me first that the games were on NBC. When I explained about the new channel, she put me on hold, and came back minutes later to tell me that soccer would be on ESPN. ESPN! An ABC affiliate! She also told me she would look into it and get back to me, but that also has not happened. She did her best to help me, and we were on the phone trolling through websites together for quite a while, but her employer left her hanging out to dry as much as I was.

I tried the link emailing Rick Germano, left the required info in the email, got a call on my cell phone (required info), and was told that Comcast in the Richmond, VA area was carrying the NBC Olympic Soccer Channel in Hi Def on channel 221. Sure enough, there it was when I got home.

Terry, you’re lucky. I also finally got a call back saying Comcast is NOT carrying it in Washington State.

Seriously, I knew I was in trouble wen Wa State comcast dropped RAI. I looked a dish services but they are both being sued in multiple states for fraud (plus they are ugly) so I guess I will just have to wait for Verison.

Update from Middletown CT — I just got a call from the rep I spoke to yesterday, who told me the channel was being added tomorrow on channel HD238. Better late than never, and I’m very happy she called me back to let me know. Meanwhile, I have some other games on the local Spanish channel, though not the Brazil game. Still, I’m much happier!

I think this is disgusting. They can’t just say they will carry it and decide not to. I live in Seattle as well and they are clueless about it. Also, I don’t have HD service so MSNBC is the only place for me to watch matches at 2am from only US games. With world class talent on other squads i can’t even see them play!

Comcast Eatontown – Olympic Soccer is available on channel 182 (HD only). Olympic Basketball in channel 183 (HD only also)

Comcast in my area of Massachusetts is carrying it on HI DEF channel 865 (OSOCC is the channel abbreviation), but I did NOT find it by looking on the comcast website or by emailing their customer support. They were completely clueless about this channel and either referred me back to their website or when pressed, told me it was the UHD channel, which it is not. Also, the TV Planner feature of their website does not list this channel nor the basketball channel.
I only found it by using the TV’s on-air guide and hunting under ALL SPORTS. It didn’t show up under the SOCCER listings!

Just in case you did not know, like many people do not know. That chat you posted wasn’t with a live person, it was with an automated chat program which uses key words in your responses to answer what it thinks your question is.

I just got this reply from a Comcast rep in Comcast’s home market of Philly where we can’t get the soccer channel:

The decision to carry specific Olympics sports channels is made market
by market and as a result some markets decided not to carry a separate
channel devoted to soccer/basketball. There will be a significant amount
of Olympic soccer/basketball coverage available on all the other NBC
Universal channels and there will also be a lot of special clips and

This is really ridiculous! Dominic; are you SURE we cant get it in Philly? I think it is also very horrible that Comcast will put up a huge skyscraper downtown but not give its loyal home town customers their rightful fix of soccer!

I am so pissed off about this bs. I have spent about a half of a day looking for the NBC Basketball Channel & NBC Soccer Channel on my Comcast Digital Cable that we pay almost $200.00 per month for and that don’t even include this slow, slow internet service. I am so sick of these people. Who do they think they are??? Yes, you know that commercial where celebrity blond hair Ed Begley is at the head of a board meeting and they are discussing I believe HD Digital Cable Service. You know the guy that says just tell the customers that we are giving them this and giving them that and not give them anything, besides they don’t know the difference between one or the other if it fell from the sky and hit them in the head!!! Well, I added the fell from the sky part but that commercial really hits home. We waited forever and a day for Comcast to finally get internet service and digital cable around here and they have played us all the way. They gave us the services when they got ready to give us the services. I found out that we could of had them several years before we did but they were doing all of these test markets services and meanwhile taking their own sweet time. But I must say no one else at the time came along with enough power to run them off or causing them to get on the ball. We had one company called Knology but it was only allowed a certain area and no more. What’s up with that??? Who do they think they are? Who are the dang nuts that give them all of this power to control other companies? If you aren’t a big, big company that will fight em on everything then they will just continue to keep on doing what they are doing to people. Charging them more and giving them less…The broadband internet service at my house is about as good as regular dial up. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if dial up is faster than the Comcast Cable Internet services around here. They keep claiming that they are giving us powerboost and this and that but dang, I really and trully believe that my service is way slower than ever. I am not just saying that either. Besides, we pay a whole lot of money for their services. For Comcast digital cable and 6 mbps of Comcast Internet which most of the time hits around 3 or 4mbps, our bill is well over $200.00. For smart people, that will pay their electric bill, telephone bill, water bill, and perhaps another little bill or two. Then, when we want to watch the Olympics and NBC & Comcast gets together with a bunch of lip service and tells us that there is going to be coverage of all of the basketball games and soccer games and I still haven’t been able to find one yet, well then, I am pissed and completely over it. Where’s the beef Comcast??? Where is my “NBC BASKETBALL CHANNEL AND NBC SOCCER CHANNEL”??? I wish someone would email me and tell me where I can find it on my digital cable box…I thank you in advance if you can solve the mystery. I just spoke with Comcast customer service and they said Comcast will not be carrying NBC Soccer or NBC Basketball in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area as NBC/USA/Universal/MSNBC will cover the games. Why did NBC and Comcast say they have a deal when it appears that Comcast doesn’t want to carry this? These channels are for 20 days and I don’t believe that NBC is asking for like Big 10 Network or NFL Network like money either. More and more every day I feel Comcast is evil!

I just got off the phone with a comcast rep who was pretty clueless, and channel 221 in my area is CNN which will not be carrying the soccer. Does anyone know where the soccer and basketball specific channels are in the PHILADELPHIA area.

Lets all write our local newspapers! (especially in Philly where Comcast’s Headquarters are! We still have time to get them to fix this!

I live in Arlington VA and the olympic soccer and basketball channels are both actually included on the Comcast TV Listings Grid. When I tune to those channels, they both display the appropriate programming information bar at the bottom. Other than that, the screen remains black – the programming is not there.

I called Comcast tech support and they actually knew what I was talking about. The guy I spoke to was aware of the channels and he went through a digital box reboot with me. It didn’t work so we rebooted again. It still didn’t work. He then arranged for a tech rep to come out to my house “fix” the problem on Tuesday. I have no idea what an on-site repair guy expects to find.

I will keep you all posted on further developments.

By the way, the soccer and basketball channels are “listed” by Comcast as being 221 and 222. Good luck on actually getting programming on those channels!

Thanks for that info Richie. I just checked out those stations on Comcast here in the Bay Area. Nothing on 221 and FitNation on 222. Hope there’s a lot of fallout from Comcast’s complete disregard for its customers.

I am reluctantly coming to the conclusion that Comcast is providing the NBC basketball/soccer dedicated channels only in HD. That would explain why I can get the channel listings and info but can’t get a picture. So unless we have HD TVs, we’re out of luck.

I am in the SF Bay Area and just spoke to a comcast rep. When I asked about the Soccer & Basketball channels, after much waiting he came back and said that there is Olympic Coverage on channels 880 – 888, which I already knew. One of them (884) supposedly has men’s basketball sometime between 11pm tonight and 11am tomorrow. Not very helpful, but something.

I am satellite TV subscriber ( Dish Network).

I was just informed that both the soccer and basketball channels are available only to HDTV subscribers.

Michael, that is both hysterical and pathetic. (Which seems to describe Comcast pretty accurately.)

I have a friend who is a consultant on customer service issues. She collects examples of horrible customer service. I’m going to forward this to her.

The soccar and the basketball channels are in HD

If you don’t have the hd cable you can’t get them

The new channels just kinda showed up

Some of the content is the same because nbc is spreading stuff around

between nbc, cnbc, msnbc, soccer, basketball, universal, usa and I think oxygen

any channel that has a hd one it’s the same content

however the soccar and basketball are in hd only…universal is also in hd but that’s a permanent channel

earlier I was seeing that the same content was on three channels and another was on two…

comcast took msnbc off their basic cable here so if you don’t at least have digital cable you aren’t going to see much

if you have hd then you have plenty

same here folks.. Comcast is a joke.. First the Big Ten network last year and still to this day and now the NBC Olympic Soccer Channel.. Which nobody at comcast has any clue that it exsists

annnnnnd, there are like NO highlights onDemand. Only from Athens. LOL

Same here in Richmond, VA…Comcast of Chesterfield (VA) lists NBC Soccer Channel as Channel 221, but my Comcast rep said the channel isn’t available in my area.

NBC + Comcast = Miserable Failure
