Comcast Doesn’t Care Whether You Can Watch Olympic Soccer Or Not
You know what really ticks me off? When companies get good publicity by saying they’re going to offer something, and then they don’t offer it.
I’m not saying that’s definitely the case with the NBC Olympic Soccer Channel, but it’s looking more and more likely with each day that goes by, especially when it comes to my own cable company, Comcast.
Remember a few weeks back, when I said NBC had said that Comcast customers would have access to the new NBC Olympic Soccer Channel?
Not so fast.
I’ve heard from people from coast to coast who have contacted their Comcast cable reps. Without exception, the Comcast folks have known absolutely nothing about the NBC Olympic Soccer Channel. I contacted my own rep in the Seattle area and he was similarly clueless. (Nice guy, but completely uninformed.) He said he’d get back to me that day, but never did. I’ve heard similar stories from others across the US.
So I contacted the online help area of Comcast. That rep also knew nothing, but said there was a chance the channel might be available for subscribers to the sports package. (In other words, for pay. Maybe. If we’re lucky.) And he linked me to this page, which also tells us basically nothing.
Here’s the thing. Unless cable companies can charge for a service, they have absolutely no incentive to offer it, unless their current subscribers raise a big stink.
My recommendation: Raise a big stink, both at your cable company at at NBC. Be polite, but make it clear that you don’t like companies getting the positive publicity that comes from saying they’re offering a service when they’re not, in fact, offering it.
Step 1: Call your own cable company. Again, be polite (it’s not the employees’ fault!) but express your interest in the channel and concern that it’s not being offered, and that nobody seems to have any information. If you’d like to call the general Comcast customer service number, it’s 1-800-COMCAST (1-800-266-2278).
Step 2: Email your cable company. Here’s the customer service email link for Comcast: http://www.comcastsupport.com/forms/contact/RickGermano/Default.aspx
If you have contact info for your own cable company, leave it in the comments and I’ll add it to this post.
Step 3: Here’s the general customer service address for NBC: nbcsportshelp@nbcuni.com. I’m in search of an email address that goes to an actual real person — stay tuned.
Step 4: Forward this post to any other blog, website, friend, acquaintance, family member or arch enemy who might be interested in Olympic coverage. This does not just affect soccer. NBC says they’re offering four dedicated Olympics channels, including one for basketball. We’ll have a whole lot more luck getting results if we get all the basketball fans in the US involved too.
If you have any other ideas or updates on your own Soccer Channel status, leave them in the comments.
Just for fun, here’s my chat with the Comcast rep. Not that it will tell you anything.

Laurie_(Wed Jul 30 16:16:18 PDT 2008)>I would appreciate it. I write for a large US soccer site. None of our readers across the country have been able to get any information about whether or not Comcast will be carrying the NBC Olympic Soccer Channel.
Laurie_(Wed Jul 30 16:19:00 PDT 2008)>Here’s a link to the most recent press release. The original specifically listed Comcast as one of the carriers. http://www.soccer365.com/us_news/story_30708221502.php
Rey.29168(Wed Jul 30 19:19:23 PDT 2008)>I understand your concern, at this time, we have no update as to wether comcast will air the olympic channel through NBC, however there is a great possiblity that the olympic games will be aired on that channel, and you need to subscribe to our sports entertainment package to have that. There recent update at this time, is that Comcast.net is providing full coverage of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games through a microsite available at: http://www.comcast.net/olympics
Laurie_(Wed Jul 30 16:20:39 PDT 2008)>So contrary to what NBC has said, it’s a for pay package?
Rey.29168(Wed Jul 30 19:21:34 PDT 2008)>For further information I would suggest that you contact the local office in your area, as they have certainly the update for this, if they would be airing the olympic games in your area.
Laurie_(Wed Jul 30 16:23:04 PDT 2008)>I already have, as have our readers all across the country. Your customer service reps are, across the board, 100% uninformed on this issue. Nobody has talked to anybody who has any information whatsoever. We would appreciate having someone else to contact who might know something.
Rey.29168(Wed Jul 30 19:24:09 PDT 2008)>I will take note of that Laurie and forward this concern to the authority.

Laurie_(Wed Jul 30 16:25:00 PDT 2008)>When and how will I be able to get the answers to the questions?
