Steve Nicol Throws his Hat in the Ring for US National Team Job

By: WC Bob | October 25th, 2006 | 3 Comments »

The vacant United States coaching gig remains vacant for now, but an announcement from the United States Soccer Federation is expected sometime in November. One person that is in the mix is Liverpool legend and current MLS New England Revolutions coach Steve Nichol who wants the job but thinks he won’t get it.

“I’d be crazy not to be interested, but I think it’s done and dusted,” the 44-year-old New England Revolution coach Nicol told BBC Sport. “Hopefully my time will come but I won’t sit up worrying about it.”

Nicol has done a fine job with the Revolution for five years and he is familiar with American soccer. Whether he would be a better coach than, say, Jurgen Klinsmann, remains to be seen, but for my money the US could do much worse than giving Nicol a shot.

Klinsmann will get the job unless he let’s it be known that his priorities are elsewhere. A few months ago I didn’t think Klinsmann would be interested but now I think it’s better than 50-50 that he will take the job.

I think the US waited too long and Klinsmann is their only option. I would have liked the former Brazil coach Perriera. The US needs a coach who can bring a new offensive style and begin a real player development program i.e no national team players should be in MLS.

Has a decision been made yet? Steve Nichol and Jurgen I have a lot of respect for both coaches. They have both proved themselves in the best Leagues in the world, but us soccer doesn’t seem to be of a very high standard yet.

I like Mcbride and you have good goal keepers like Tim Howard but no outstanding world class American players so not matter who you get dont expect to win anything. Its good to see your soccer is improving though.
