Seven Finalists for Mexico Coaching Job

By: WC Bob | October 13th, 2006 | 1 Comment »

Shortlists are the flavor of the week. Unlike the very long shortlist of candidates for FIFA player of the year, the Mexican Football Federation says it only has seven names of its list of coaches to replace the departed Ricardo La Volpe as the boss of El Tri. What isn’t known is the exact name of the seven final candidates but there is speculation that Necaxa coach and former Mexico great Hugo Sanchez, America boss Luis Fernando “Flaco” Tena , Toluca coach Américo Gallego, Tigres coach Mario Carrillo and former Germany boss Jurgen Klinsmann are all on the list.

Klinsmann’s name obviously stands out but if I were asked to make the choice I would go with Hugo Sanchez because he is the Jurgen Klinsmann of Mexico. He is young, charismatic and a known entity in Mexico. Unlike Klinsmann, he knows Mexico’s league and its players. He was a heck of a player and has had success as a manager. Mexico could do worse than picking Hugo Sanchez.

The article in question implies that Gallego and Klinsman had been linked, but not that they’re in the list. In fact, both are positively out as on wednesday the federation decided that the job would only be offered to a mexican (after the experience with argentina’s native La Volpe, I guess).
