Report: Pekerman Inches Closer to being US Soccer Coach

By: WC Bob | November 17th, 2006 | 14 Comments »

Former Argentina head coach Jose Pekerman is now the apparent front runner to become the US national team coach. According to newspaper reports in Mexico (interesting place for this to leak out), U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati said of Pekerman, “We did not sign the contract yet, but it just lacks some details.”

The reports suggest that Pekerman’s assistant is expected to be Fernando Clavijo, who coached Haiti in 2003 and has also worked in MLS.

If it turns out to be true, the choice of Pekerman is an interesting one. He did lead Argentina to the quarterfinals at this year’s World Cup and he does have coaching experience around the world, but also he speaks limited English and you have to wonder how familiar he is with soccer in the United States.

Stay tuned. I have a feeling this story isn’t quite finished yet.

If they hire Pekerman their nuts. Didn’t anyone in the US watch the WC and his disastrous performance? I know you he could only due so much with that Argentine team but his choice in tactics and subs was very poor.

Klinsman is my first choice, Klinsman is my second choice and Klinsman is my third choice. I believe he is the perfect manager to take over and guide the US team to the next level. He would also be very helpful to help implement the necessary changes in the MLS.

neocon, i think you are a bit dilussional, i dont mean to that disrespect but to just share my point. The reason we are praising kilnsman is because they had a good WC, but lets be honost the reason Germany did well isnt because of Klinsman, it was because of they played in their ground.

Before the WC they were loosing 4-1 to italy, and 3-1 to holland. The german media hated Klinsman, in the WC they didnt play anyone good at all. they played all terrible teams until they faced Argentina.

Argentina out classed, out played and outdid the germans, but some unlucky things happend at the end and it went to a shootout.

As for Pekerman??? are you kidding me?????? in all coaching positions there are two positions that are most feared, they are the Brazil head coaching positions and the Argentina. Because these two countries are expected to win everything. the pressure is insane because of their depth and the talent they produce.

pekerman, was a genious, he was a coach that got the best out of his players and anyone would tell you that, there was no other team in the WC that was more enjoyable to watch than Argentina, they scored three goals thare considered an all time great, with one being called an all time Best.

Could you have imagined an Argentina team, with out Walter Samuel, Javier Zanetti, Placente, Juan Veron, and the likes??? ohh and he also put Messi, Tevez, Aimar on the bench. This guy knows soccer like the palm of his hands. his tactics and formations are always incredible, his adjustments and system is just pure class.

He put a great team against IV, and then against S&M another formation because of their great defensive tactics, and so on.

ohh he has won 5 youth world championships, if you ask me. Pekerman could take the US to an area it never reached because this guy knows the game.

I can assure you I am very cognizant of how both Germany and Argentina played and were managed in the world cup.

I disagree with your post and still believe Klinsman would be by far the better choice for team. He took a young team, implemented a new system and saw them reach the semi – finals. Now I know playing in your home country is a boost but you must give him more credit than you do. Those loses to Italy and Holland were exhibition games.

I didn’t see the Ger v Arg game as you did. I don’t think Germany was outclassed at all in that game. It was classic German play, solid defense with counterattacks and of course never giving up. Argentina fell into the classic mistake of thinking the game was won which I blame mostly on Pekerman. I also believe the win over SM was one of the worst things to happen to Argentina. Great game but with due respect to Argentina it was against SM and gave them a false sense of their game being above the rest. Mexico showed them reality and Germany showed them the door.

It’s funny how every country believes the pressure on their manager is the most intense. I think he pressure on Lippi (Italy), or Klinsman (Germany) or Ericcson (England) or Aragones (Spain) is every bit as much if not more than that of Pekerman or Parreira. I also believe these countries produce equal and in some cases better talent to that of either brazil or argentina.

In conclusion cmon KLINSMAN.

Neocon: Thanks for your insightful and rational comments. Klinsman would obviously be a better fit that Pekerman. And the top European teams obviously produce talent at least on a par with the top South American countries. One more thing about Klinsman: He loves living in the U.S. and the lifestyle of the Southern California beach community where he resides – this would make for a smooth transition to coaching U.S. players.

Hey everyone, and the writer of this article, I just wanted to say the source of the article is not from Mexico. The Article is from a newspaper called “La Opinion,” which is based in Los Angeles, CA. This is an American Based Newspaper in Spanish that gives news on the United States and the World. Not on Mexico.

Hey again, I loved the comments you all had on the the two coaches. Here is my stance. Klinsman: Klinsman is an ideal choice in the mind of soccer players and fans because Germany went to the semis of the World cup. He lives in the U.S. and has the knowledge of the U.S. soccer system and the players. The reason I think Klinsman would be a great choice is the reason they are saying he will not get the job. TWO Reasons: 1. They say he rejected an offer of 1.8 Million becasue he wanted 2.5 Million. 2. (Most Important) He wanted control of the Youth Soccer System in the U.S.) If you look at every country around the world, who has control of all the Youth National teams and reserve teams. The Manager of the Head National Team. Here in the U.S. we give the American Board and staff the control of our nation youth program: Olympic Delevopment Program. If we are going to have the right development of players, then every age of the National Teams in the country need to be on the same basis. So even though Klinsman does not coach the youth programs he should over see it. Thats one of the problems with our country, Gulati has to have a say in our soccer system and how it is runned and how we coach and who we coach. It should be the coaches.

Pekerman: Two great aspects I think that Pekerman brings are: 1. Something Gulati does have right for once. Marketing to the Hispanic based population in the United States. We do need a coach that is going to speak spanish and english. And although he doesn’t speak english very well, he can and will learn with the help of Fernando Clavijo as well as tutors. 2. The most important thing. If you look back at Arena’s rein on the MNT, he did do great things. But in 2006 we did not have the roster we needed to compete at a high enough level to get out of our group in the World Cup. Two Reasons: Arena chose players i.e. Donovan, Obrien, on the roster to go, when they have not done much for the program in the last two years. Yes, Obrien is a great player, but he was injured the past two years as well as in between teams by leaving Ajax, then his next club, and then finally commuting back to the MLS. Donovan has been a great dissapointment. Why? because he is still playing in the MlS and hasn’t developed into the player that everyone thought he would. Arena chose them as strong parts of the team becasue of there efforts in the past. Our best two players at the World Cup were McBride (who did not get the ball enough) and Dempsey, who was chosen as a last minute add to the roster. And now Dempsey is most likely head to either Charlton or Fulham in the Premiership. This is why having Pekerman will have its advantages. THE CLEAN SLATE. Pekerman is not familiar with our players. I think that is a great thing. We get to see a coach come in, who wipes the slate clean. Not one player is safe. Not even Dempsey is safe. The players will perform at a higher level because they want to make the squad for a new coach, and second, the best players will indeed be chosen, no favorites, none of that. Either way, both choices are a good choice.

So both Coaches have their flaws. Klinsman is a bit too familiar with the squad, as well as only getting the team to the semifinals. Germany should have made it to the final based on their history and the fact they had home field advantage. Pekerman Conceded to working with an American staff, where as Klinsman wanted his own. Give the mangers the rights to choose their own staff, not yours Gulati.

Anyway, just another aspect to think about. My best choice, Pekerman.

Also, Neocon, Fair failed to touch on one other aspect. Messi was forced to sit the bench in the quarterfinal because the Argentina goalkeeper got injured. Pekerman was forced to sub the goalie and leave Messi out of the squad. Think about it, what other reason is there. Throughout the whole World Cup he had Messi playing, you don’t think he wanted to get him in. So before you knock him, watch the game again and count the subs.

Dearest Peter,

as a player and coach of soccer in the United States, I can also say thank you to Klinsman for staying “true blue” (very German, by the way- no wonder they took all the German flags down after the tournament)

We don’t need an overrated coach who happened to get a group of underachieving players to finally reach their potential and make a run through a tournament hand delivered to them on their own soil. This “GREAT” soccer team who has been consistently inferior to the likes of Brazil, France, and Italy for the last decade or so. This “GREAT” soccer team who was pushed to the brink in 2002 versus the inferior US squad (lest we forget the hand ball on the line)

I’m sure Mr. Klinsmann will be saving your ignorant rants to his portfolio.

As for the rest of us, they were short of insight, but very humorous
