The announcers on ESPN for the Portugal game were idiots. I think they were in love with Ronaldo and his bad acting.

I am Canadian and played soccer (football) in summer from the age of four, but only to stay in shape for hockey. I am watching the 2010 World Cup just as I did the 2006 World Cup. In hockey, if you pull such blatant “fish out of water” flopping around antics not only do you get a “diving” penalty, but after awhile your own team mates would either beat the crap out of you or at least kick you off the team for embarrassing them with such feminine and unmanly behaviour.

This is not trolling, but a truly serious question: Can someone tell me why Catholic teams (that is teams from Catholic countries like France, Brazil, Mexico, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Argentina, etc.) get away with all this soap opera prima donna acting whenever anyone goes near them in order to draw free kicks, penalty kicks, and yellow cards. I don't ever see it with any of the Protestant (Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, England) or Asian (Korea, Japan) teams.

A perfect example was today when the Italian player (Catholic) did the big “archer's pose” fall when there was clearly no more contact from the New Zealand (Protestant) player supposedly still holding his jersey — as shown during the slow-motion replay.

This has been going on for far too long. Is there anywhere that one can get a video highlighting ALL of the contact for Catholic country players (who always dive and then drama queen all over the turf like they are going into epileptic convulsions) versus Protestant country or Asian players (who just get up and shake it off, thereby not drawing the fake penalties)?

When did Catholic players become such fainting and swooning women, and why is this allowed at the World Cup level? I known Latin-speaking countries are supposed to be more passionate and expressive, but this results in patently unfair and imbalanced refereeing. Especially when all the other Catholic players run up and whine like little girls to the refs, pecking away at him until a penalty is called. It truly tips the scales in favour of the Catholic countries (especially with the penalty kicks) and seems so ridiculously dramatic and girlish that I honestly can't understand why it continues… But it certainly explains the World Cup results for the last few decades.

This is probably why we Canadians (and the Americans) don't consider soccer a manly sport (especially compared to hockey or rugby or our flavour of football). It completely sabotages and ruins the competition, and it honestly makes it hard to watch or even take the games seriously.

The Microcosm of Our Emotional State as “Individuals” as “Teammates” as “Compatriots” or as “Citizens of the World” on display in South Africa. It's interesting how adversity can divide us “a la French” or unifies us “American way”. Watch out for the team US
